Title: Most Prized SDC Possession?
Post by: Aunt Mollie on August 13, 2012, 01:23:04 PM
I was wondering what items from SDC we love the most.  Is there something that will be in your home for the rest of your life?

For me, it is a beautiful pink and gold swirled paper weight that Ray (jones), glass blower, made for me.  I worked with him at SOTH.

A log cabin Christmas ornament that I purchased on my honeymoon!  It's still in great shape, but the SDC on the sign over the door has long faded away.

For me, as a former employee, it will be the collection of material (papers, publicity items, props, costuming) saved from my time on park. Those seven years were some of the best in my young life. Good job, fair money, great friends and coworkers, alot of fun. Those "saved" things from my time on park bring back great memories.

Probably my original George Keiffer drawings of the City and attractions before many of them were built.  I've got them in a fireproof lockbox and on acid-free backing as well.

Oh...and my time at the City which will never leave me.

i have 2 copper rings, 1 that says OUTLAW, & 1 that says VANESSA, my daughters name. my daughters ring was made in 1987. the OUTLAW ring was made back in the late 70s, they were made by copper pipes & they carved names in them with a very small saw & file.

This is going to sound silly, but my sons belt. My mom and stepdad purchased it for him and it has his name on it. My mommy is long since passed away and it was one of the last times we went to Branson with her. It was great weather because it was Harvest Fest and that time is just amazing anyway. I miss her every now and again. So the belt is my most prized possesion.

I was lucky enough to be at Borders in Springfield and at SDC when Jack & Pete plus their wives were signing the 50th anniversary books.  So I would have to say having books signed by all 4 of them is my most prized possession.

I have two...last year, I was in the apple cabin/former basket shop and I found a lonely, scraggly little basket in the corner that was signed "D. Ellison" on the bottom. As far as I could tell, it might have been the last Donnie Ellison basket in the shop. I eagerly plopped down $15 and took it home!

My second is my collection of marshall badges from my childhood. I wouldn't sell them for a thousand dollars. There are so many wonderful memories in those old tin badges.

My 2 old refillable glass mugs. I do not even remember what year I purchased them. 75 cent refills, but most food service people do not even know what they are. At OTC some stands will refuse to fill them but still give you the refill price in a regular cup. They say they are afraid of breaking since they are not sure if the glass is tempered.

I have so much stuff, I have no idea! But I'm gonna say that my most prized possession from SDC is the memories I made with my Grandma.

A few things come to mind for me...

The round, glass, dated, themed ornaments my family collected over the years.

A toy box that was made at the woodcarvers shop for me as a child, with my name engraved in the front.

A large snowglobe my grandmother bought for me. It has the Christmas Tree in the center with Main Street surrounding it.

:D :D Hahaha! Me too! That being said, I wish I had held onto some of my SP from when I was younger. I miss the colored, trifold passes. These new ones lack some pizazz.

I obviously have my passes from my younger days since I have a problem with keeping SDC/ Branson stuff, and looking at those are fun and all, but they only make me think of the turnstyles...after that point my other items have to take over.

I also thought my SDC coloring book my sister and I shared is a great piece for me, it is scribbled and tattered, but it is a prized piece. I recently bought my sister the same book but the new version and gave it to her as a gift.

Is 2000 when they were building Wildfire I wrote the park about how excited I was! The park responded by sending me a free invite to ride on the media day and also sent me one of the leftover bolts used during construction. It still has the B&M tag on it! That will forever be treasured!  ;D

Curious, are you the one who posted the picture to the Ellen Show, who then posted it to SDC's Facebook Page?

There is a dad, with his son & daughter going down the AP...& it is pretty priceless!

I don't really have anything overly rare, or hard to find, but I always like to shop at SDC, and lately I've spent some time on ebay to see what I can find.

A few things I love, the old early 80's SDC picture guide, my map from 1981 that I finally framed and have hanging in my home.  Years ago, I bought a cast iron corn stick pan that I love, though I have issues making the corn sticks! I have a doily pie pan that I use quite at bit.    I also have some of an old SDC card playing game that I like, because I like that old artwork they did in the 80's to depict  SDC attractions.  (I recently picked up the coloring book on ebay, with the same artwork)
I

One thing I wish I'd gotten years ago was those adorable hillbilly carvings they used to sell in the woodworkers shop.  I have pictures, but I never felt I could afford them then.

Of course I treasure all my pictures, from my old, old late 70's snapshots, to my present day digitals!

Speaking of park maps.  Was there an old map that showed people walking around in the park?  I have an image in my head, the people were kind of characterized. I keep my eye out for one, I'd like to see it again if it exists.

The Pigeon Forge version of the large souvenir map had people walking around in it and I believe at some point, some of the Branson large souvenir maps did too.   I had one as a kid with people walking around in it, but can't find that one.

The map ya'll are thinking about with the cartoon characters walking around on it was released in 1979. It was sold through the 1981 season, and that year, a new map was released. Take a look at a detail of that map:        http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan

Thanks, I'm pretty sure that's what I was thinking of!  Glad to know it exists.  I'll have to keep my eye out for one.  I think I probably had one, but not sure where it ended up.  I think the one I have now is dated 1981.  I also found a Pathfinder from 1982, and a receipt for tickets in 1978, when the price of an adult admission was a whopping 7.95!  I think that year was my second trip when I started to become a real fan of the park and took pictures and kept stuff.

Thanks for pointing me to the photo.  Can't wait to see more of it someday

I think it would be great if SDC would issue an HO scale Frisco Silver Dollar Line train set, and HO scale buildings like the depot, general store, and the ice cream parlor, church, and so on. I wish they would even issue HO scale sized animals and people figures. Also wish they would dig into their photo file and do a big book of photos of SDC through the years, with a timeline on how things changed, and include quotes from some of the citizens. I'd be glad to offer some of my diving bell and float trip photos for something like that. Those would be prized possessions to me.

I wish Jack & Pete would do a book on the complete history of SDC while they have their health and still have time to do it, including stories from current and past citizens.  The stories these guys and past citizens could tell will soon be gone forever.  It seems the people that make the decisions at SDC anymore just don't understand the true passion a lot of SDC fans have.  What a great read and treasure that would be!

When I was a kid I demanded a garter every time we went, which was about every other weekend in the summer.  I wish I had saved those.  As a kid you don't think about stuff like that.  I also got a parasol one time and had it decorated. I think my mom still has a couple of the glass mugs.  I have a Victorian looking paper doll book and a coloring book I got in the book store as a teenager.  Best thing we still have is the first tin type photo we had done.  I was about 6 in the picture and my dad looked like he truly belonged in that era it was funny (he passed away in 2011) great memories there.  I have gotten so many trinkets and things over the years, it's hard to choose a favorite.  I seem to also remember little "view finder" like key chains that had pictures of you on American Plunge.  Those remind me of my grandparents who are now gone too,  that was my grandpa's favorite ride.  I think he rode that up till he got too sick to go there anymore.  Oh the things you remember....

Well, I already answered this, but I thought of a few more things.  I said earlier that the Christmas ornament (wooden log cabin) that we bought on our honeymoon was my prized possession, but I've thought of a few more things that I totally forgot about.  We had a tintype made (the real kind) when our son was 3 months old.  That photo is priceless to me!!  We had the glass mugs until I threw them away a few years ago on a cleaning binge!  WHATEVER POSSESSED ME!

Hubs would say that his chisel sets are his most prized!  He got the last one at the Black Friday sale for 30% off!

And Junior's idea of a complete history book?  Priceless!  I hope someone is listening!!

I love everyone's lists... I also have a couple of most prized possessions. My first possession would be my painting that represents the partnership between Coke and HFEC. I can't remember the artist's name off the top of my head. The second thing that I prize the most would be my copy of Love Works that is signed by Jack,Sherry, Pete, JoDee, and Joel. My third, but most defiantly not my last prized SDC possession would be my SDC Sign... Log, Axe, and all. It stands about 4 feet tall and about 6 foot wide, I think it was a parking lot sign at one time. The funny thing is that the axe handle is pointing to the left... Not the right... Does anyone recall if the earlier log and axe was flipped?

It was common in years past, the 70s, early to mid 80's, to have a logo as part of signs...even on the parking lot. Sometimes the signs were double sided, and that meant the axe was on the regular side on one side, and flipped on the reverse side of the sign. Sounds like  you have one of those "flipped" versions.

my sign is about 3'x3' and is solid wood, Not too sure what I'd do with a big one like that...but I sure wouldn't pass it up!
