Title: SDC and large guests
Post by: kevlev on June 14, 2012, 04:47:31 PM
I am a large guy (around 385 lbs)

I am planning to take my daughter to SDC in late July.

What limitations should I expect for rides and attractions on our trip to SDC?

Thanks

I'm 6'3 and 325. Wildfire is tough on me. It takes some effort to get the buck to snap. I'm a bit perplexed cause I've ridden other B&Ms without that @#$3 strap just fine.

I think you'll find most major attractions very tough to impossible.

I need to get back to my playing weight of 275. Those were the days.

Rides that you definitely should be able to ride:
Train
Flooded Mine
Lost River of the Ozarks
Riverblast
American Plunge

Rides that you will not be able to ride:
Powder Keg
Giant Swing

Other rides that I am not sure of:
Wildfire
Thunderation
Fire in the Hole

Some of the rides have seats that are just like the ones on the ride sitting out in front so you can see if it works for you without wasting time in line just to not ride.

I think Row 5 on Wildfire is the row that has larger seats for larger guests.

Here's a link to the SDC website page that has specific info about ride accessibility:

I wasn't aware of the row 5 on Wildfire. The father of one of my son's friends is probably about your size and I don't think he was able to ride any of the coasters. I remember him saying he tried Wildfire and they wouldn't let him. I do think that and Powderkeg are the two that have the trial seats. I'm 6' 2" and 225 and some of those seem like a tight fit for me. Fire in the Hole you might be able to get on as it's basically a flat seat with a swing down bar. I'm guessing you've never been there before and please take this advice without offense. SDC is quite hilly and there's a lot of walking up and down. Grab a pathfinder (the newspaper with a map) and look at the route they have outlined it shows where the most strenuous parts of the park are to walk around. If you plan on spending a lot of time there I would go to the left when you get to the City square which will take you down the biggest hill towards Wildfire, American Plunge, Powderkeg and Fire in the Hole. Then work your way around the park clockwise so when you're leaving you're coming back up by Flooded Mine and Thunderation, the grade is lot less steep. Once again, I do not know your particular situation and am only offering advice out of friendship and to help have the most enjoyable day possible. I know there's been many a late afternoon after I've done just the opposite of what I just told you that I thought caridac hill would kill me coming back up. Whatever you choose to do there will be plenty to see and do and hope you have a great trip!

Larson, your right on the money about the hills,,

alot of times I will go straight past the store and over the RR bridge and down and end up by the saloon area, work that area and the head over to the "east" side,,,
LOL!!

that way i dont have to walk down or up cardiac hill...!!!

I've been to SDC, but it's been a long time.

I was planning to rent one of the ECV to get around the hilly park better.

They have been lifesavers at Disneyworld for me in the past.

FITH, at least, is flat bench seats, and if they can close the lap bar you can ride one per car, depending on traffic. Over the years I've seen the lap bar squeezed down on some seriously large people. I can't speak to how comfortable it was for the riders, though.

kevlev, call ahead to reserve your ECV early.  They go quickly on busy days.  I've been around the rental area and witnessed grown people cry because the rentals were all accounted for.  I would hate for it to ruin your day bc. there weren't any available for you.

Good advice. I'd still follow the route I gave you though. Pretty sure they tell you not to use the ecv's on cardiac hill.
