Title: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 03, 2012, 05:04:41 PM
I wanted to play an alternative game to our "Where in the City" by offering on my Flickr site an old mystery photo and giving everyone a chance to identify it. The photo is from 1979. On stage at the theater is the talented D.A. Calloway, a musician and singer, and he is putting on a music and comedy show to entertain guests. My questions for all of you:  1) What is the name of the theater he is performing at? and 2) How is the structure utilized in 2012? The little outdoor theater pictured is long gone, the theater does not exist. The stage is still in the original location but it is utilizedfor a different purpose. Clue: look at the roofline of the structure. By the way, D.A. Calloway still works on park as a manager or director of some type in the Entertainment Department. But no more singing and playing for him today. Take a guess...

BINGO! Well, I guess I should have limited this to guests of SDC only, not employees or former employees. The roofline of the magic shop is the roof of the old Valley Theater. Even the towerlike structure on the roof is still there today. I suppose I will have to try to pull more obscure photos from my vaults for any other attempts at this little game!

I have added a second mystery photo to my Flickr site. Look closely at the photo. Click "enlarge" and read the full caption. Can you tell me the location on park today? What was that location called back in 1979 when the photo was taken? Bonus point for anyone who can tell  me where the metal chairs (around the tables) are located on park today.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan   Current and former "citizens" are not allowed to play this round. Give it a try!

The cluster of grapes leads me to think this is the Vineyard restaurant, now the Wagon Works Grill. I know I've sat in these chairs at sometime. First thought is Hannah's Ice Cream.

Well, I just can't fool a SDC expert...and there are so many at this Website! It is the Welch's Vineyard Restaurant, now the Wagonworks. Can anyone tell me where the chairs used in the Vineyard are now located on park? I noticed on my last trip the chairs have new bottoms in them, but the rest of the metal chairs (though refurbished) are still in use. So, that bonus point is still up for grabs! (Oh, Rube is right, too! The stage and the wagon behind it in the photo were used for the famous "Wally Welch Review Puppet Show.")

BETAMIKE............1 Point

I'm not making these photo contests hard enough!

The Toss Test was a line game for those waiting to go into the diving bell. MISSIN is the winner this round! Participants tossed life rings on a pole hanging from the side of the building. They practiced tossing life rings just in case the diving bell crashed and an emergency exit was required.

Mystery Photo #4: Shows a winter construction project, winter of 1981-1982. What was the structure under construction originally used for, and what is housed in it in 2012? I'm really trying to trick you on this one. Good luck!        http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan
Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: betamike on May 09, 2012, 07:19:37 PM
My logical guess would be the shop outside of the original scrimshaw (it now sells shells and prints).  the original items sold during this time were duck decoys.

Now, if you are talking about Shanty Town (which it could be) then there's your answer...and the answer for 2012 would be nothing since it's gone.
Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 09, 2012, 07:27:58 PM
WE HAVE A WINNER! (I am just not making this hard enough.) Betamike is correct. The duck decoy shop make its initial appearance to guests in 1982. It now is Dugan's Trading Company.  I figured I'd have a half dozen people guess Shantytown, but that did not appear until the 1984 season.

??? Well, putting two half-right answers together: It used to be the Butterfield Stage Depot, and is now sitting on Cardiac Hill between the Pork Rinds stand and Flossie's Fried Fancies, so it's probably used to sell something else fried!

Mystery Photo #7: 1981 photo of my friend, Bob, from Granite City, IL. He was a Junior like me. In the background you will see some barrels and a big banner, in the lake, some structures on the water, and along the rope fence, coin boxes for the structures in the lake. All that stuff was part of a short lived attraction along Lake Silver. Can you name that attraction?

The Paid Games area included the games "ball and jack," "jacob's ladder," and the remote controlled boats in the lake. Guests paid a small amount for playing games, and if they won they got a prize, something small, like a SDC mug, or something of that nature. Later, paid games were made "free" and the attendants challenged people to climb jacob's ladder. Greedy Bros. Excursion was part of the Shantytown addition by the lake, and appeared for the first time in 1984. The Paid Games area was removed in '83 or '84. According to what others posted here, some of the paid games were brought back a few years later, in the later '80s or in the '90s at some point, and included other games, too. Rube has posted scans of ribbons he won playing games at the second incarnation of the paid games, which I think was located in the area about where the pathway winds up from Geyser Gulch up past the pottery shop  to the railroad tracks, but, you will have to get someone else to verify that as it was after my time on park.

Mystery Photo #8: The man pictured in 1980, along with a partner, had a special entertainment function on park for most of the season. What was the function/show(s) he and his partner were involved in, and where was the photo taken on park? You will see to the left of the shot the blurry leg of his partner, who is sitting on the balcony of the building across from the tower.     http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan

OKIEBLUEGRASS...1 (Good enough answer. The two guys in the summer of 1980 were professional stuntmen shipped in from LA. They performed little skits on Main Street at the old Shot Tower, at the tower at the Lumbercamp, and at the diving bell. They also took part in the Eaton Doolittle political campaign parades that election year that started on Main Street with a rally, and wound up at the diving bell. In the photo presented here, the stuntmen are "clumsy workmen" who botch a job at the Lumbercamp tower, and using a wire cable propel themselves over the crowd to the balcony of the Saloon where they crash landed.)

The correct answer is: "THE MOUNTAIN FOLKS MUSIC FESTIVAL" This was a very popular festival from the mid-70's through the mid to late 80's at SDC, always held in spring. It featured traditional, bluegrass and Gospel acts, and I can tell you it was a fun time to be at SDC!

Good ole Jack McDowell.  He was out to the park a few weeks ago and I chatted with him in the lunch room.  His character name was indeed Merciful Pervis...the third and a half.  He was the comedian in the Echo Hollow show during the time the Dillards played down there, as well as the Deputy in the street troupe.  He's now working at the Titanic museum.  Great guy!
Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 16, 2012, 08:13:27 AM
Well, I know the man in mystery photo #10 did use a rope maker machine at fall crafts festivals, so it's possible he operated the coin press, too. However, my friend and work buddy JACK McDOWELL played characters on park like the deputy sheriff. At night in '82 and '83 he moonlighted as "Ernest T" the comedian at Hee Haw Theater. He is best known at SDC for playing "Mercy Purvis" the comedy sidekick to Rodney Dillard in the Silver Dollar Jubilee at Echo Hollow. I have to award the points to the person who answered correctly first, so BETAMIKE gets TWO points this round!

Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 16, 2012, 03:24:10 PM
Currently, the area that was utilized for the cable slide in Tom Sawyer's Landing is part of the paved pathway leading down from the loop RR crossing to the main pathway in the Riverfront section of the park. ZEPHON is on the board with one point! When TSL was built in 1980, it featured the first ballroom, some climbing and running obsticles, a fireman's pole, a boat to climb on, and the cable slide. Due to kids falling and hurting themselves, the fireman's pole was gone pretty quickly, a season or two later, the cable slide was gone. Over the years, TSL changed. A petting zoo was in part of the area where RiverBlast now sits, there were arts and crafts and the carousel in the old Wagonworks Barn, then the additional towers were built, the hand wax station added, the Balloon Chase, and other attractions came and went.

Ozarks Gal is back in the game, and STILL at #1 with points! Indeed, that photo was taken at the loading dock of Jim Owens' Float Trip Ride, home now to the American Plunge. Pictured is my friend Nick Franke of Blue Eye, MO. Nick and I worked together at the float trip in 1979, and we both moved over to the diving bell in 1980. Last year for the float trip was 1980, and it became the AP in '81. We were costumed as "river rats" at the float trip. The loading dock pictured is still the same color paint, and is now used as an overflow line for the AP on busy days. When the AP came about, they added a lift  hill and a new loading area, and reversed the channel water flow. They removed the "scenes" along the float trip river, but left the rest of the old ride intact. You can still see the old float trip dock, and 75 percent of the channels by walking around the line up paths for Wildfire and AP. Over time, some of the old concrete, themed to look like rocks, has crumbled away. The powers that be have had to redo some of the old float trip channels and replace the cave from the float trip. The float trip was in service from about 1968-80. By the way, Nick has cleaned up his act and now is a partner in a law firm in St. Louis!

Mystery photo #13: DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!   "TRAMS" guessed it is now the shop that houses The Greatest Gift.
--
I may have gotten myself into trouble here, too. Betamike guessed it at one time was the music shop...and, I don't know, he may be right. His "citizenship" was after mine, and there was a period of time in the '90's where I was wrapped up in my radio career and did not visit SDC for many years...so the music shop may have been housed there at some time after I left the park...but NOT before it was the silversmith shop. I think it was only used prior to being the silversmith shop as something else. Maybe Rube will have to do some research here to verify by looking at pre 1977 pathfinders or maps, but I'm not aware of it serving as a music shop in the period of 1971-1976.  So, for  now, the extra point question remains open. What was the silversmith shop building used for before it was the silversmith shop?

Prior to Flooded Mine being constructed, the area was used as the new parking lot after they closed off the first parking lot...Main Street! Rube posted a photo some time ago that showed cars parked along the pathway leading from the Blacksmith Shop and up to the town square. Early, early '60's I think. My stepfather told me first time he visited SDC, he parked in the vicinity of where FM is, and entrance to the city was by walking across the Swinging Bridge!

Was it the barbershop?

BINGO!    Pintrader has got the extra point! It indeed was the Barber Shop. The Barber Shop was like the Jail is...kind of a static display space. It had a full set up of an old time barber shop, a dummy sitting in the chair getting his hair cut by another dummy. I think that was the original use of the space...at least it was in 1970 when I visited the first time as a little kid...and to the best of my knowledge only served in that capacity until the silversmith shop went in there sometime in the early to mid-70's. Again, now it is "The Greatest Gift" shop.

MYSTERY PHOTO #14: The old Gazebo on Main Street, photo from 1979. QUESTION: Name this noted "citizen" who entertained at the theaters around the park, and what was his specialty? Hint: His mom was Jack Herschend's personal secretary for many years, his dad was a talented scrimshaw artist on park.

John Corbin Goldsberry?  The Dulcimer?
Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 16, 2012, 09:41:19 PM
John Goldsberry. John Corbin. John Corbin Goldsberry. He was billed under all three names. Later, when he married, the act became known as Jan and John or John and Jan. He played the hammer dulcimer. John is known on sdcfans.com as OLD GUY and was one of the charter members on this site. He posted many, many posts about the old days at SDC. He and his wife left the park in the mid to late 90's I think. They were saddened deeply when the park management moved in another direction, leaving traditional music behind. Traditional music is what they both did. The only band on park left over from that period of the 1970s is Horse Creek. Of course, we all love the Front Porch Pickers, too. I noticed something while on park the last couple of years...folks get to the McHaffie Homestead a half hour before the pickers begin their shows, and when they do the shows, it is standing room only around the porch. Hint to park management: Maybe it was wrong to move away from the traditional music performers? Last I heard, John was working at the dulcimer shop in Branson adjacent to Presley's Jubilee. Don't know if he is still there or not.

MYSTERY PHOTO #15:   My friend Aubrey was in the SDC Labor Pool. That meant he would show up for work, and they would assign him to a different place to work each day...where ever there was a need. One day he'd bus tables at the smokehouse, next day he'd greet guests at the diving bell. All the Juniors at the diving bell were in their late teens and early 20s, and so we all looked up to and highly respected Aubrey, whom we lovingly called "The Colonel" because he reminded us of Colonel Sanders, of KFC fame. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and had the knack of walking up to people, asking them where they were from...and then telling them he had visited their hometown, and provide facts and figures to proove he really had been there! It always amazed us Juniors, and the guests, too...because he was always right! He was a retired man who was probably in his late '60s at the time this photo was taken in 1983. QUESTION: In the photo, what location on park is he greeting guests, and how is the building he worked out of utilized on park today?

Looks like he is at the train depot.  It's used as a gift shop today.
Title: Re: Mystery Photo

PINTRADER HAS IT!  Prior to the gift shop being put in at the train depot, it was used as the depot office. A stationmaster sat at the front window. Initially, in the early days when there were regular and premium ticket prices, he'd punch your premium "passport" ticket so you could enter the depot and ride the train. Later, he'd give you a Pathfinder, steer you to other things to see and do, point out how to get to the rest rooms, and so on. The office was also used as a break room for the conductors. In the off season, the depot was sometimes used to store props from other attractions, so they could be kept out of the harsh winter weather until next season. I fondly remember Ken Holt as being the primary stationmaster during the years I worked on park. I believe that Ken, who was an older gent back then, has now passed on to that great train depot in the sky! Today, the same space is the train depot gift shop.

Musket shooting demonstrations at the Gun & Knife Shop?
Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 17, 2012, 07:24:21 AM
You got it again, Pintrader! Prior to the construction of Wildfire in the woods near the gun and knife shop, black powder rifle demonstrations were given all day, and guests could try shooting them. This was a popular thing to do, and the noise from the shots got people moving over and into the shop to look things over. After wildfire was built, it was too dangerous to shoot the rifles in that direction anymore, and so they quit that activity. At the time this photo was taken, the gunmaker was Bruce Grimes, who dressed in buckskins and was talented at hand carving wildlife and patriotic themes into the stocks of the rifles. His work was fabulous, and on top of that, Bruce was a great yodeler, and would entertain guests by yodeling for them. This is one of the other gunsmiths, whose name I don't remember. He is loading a rifle for a demonstration in the picture.

Jack Herschend?
Title: Re: Mystery Photo
Post by: Junior on May 17, 2012, 10:22:24 AM
The photo is an end of the summer meeting of Young Life, the Christian organization that supplied college aged students to the park for about 12 weeks to help in various capacities. The college kids were paid, and the people in the photo were a couple that owned a small resort on Table Rock Lake near Kimberling City that the Young Life people stayed at all summer. Jack Herschend is seen presenting the couple, whose names I cannot remember, with a certificate of appreciation for their work with the Young Life program that summer. Several of the Juniors at the diving bell were in the Young Life program. I attended some meetings of Young Life over the summer of 1980. It was always fun, a prayer, devotional, some kind of religious based skit or program, and after the program, many Young Life participants and their guests would go to the Pizza Corral at Kimberling City for pizza, Cokes, and to watch silent movies the restaurant ran. I remember seeing a Buster Keaton flick one evening. My pal, Russ Maulden, who worked diving bell maintenance all those years ago, and who made a career at SDC, even married a lovely young gal that was in the Young Life program. I think Young Life operates a hostel across Highway 76 adjacent to the employee parking lot today. I am glad to know the Young Life program continues at SDC, one of the many Christian based programs they have been involved in for decades.

MYSTERY PHOTO #18:   From 1978, this is a photo of Norm, one of the notable "citizens" in his time. He always had a big smile on his face and was one of the first people to greet guests as they came through the Hospitality House doors and onto the town square. QUESTION: What specific character role did he play? If you visited SDC as a kid in the late 70s or early to mid 80s, Norm would have been one of the first people you saw each time you came to visit.

Norm was the town sheriff...he passed out the deputy badges to all the kids and swore them in. He was excellent at visiting with guests. He also did some of the Hatfield/McCoy street skits.

SOOOOOOOOOOO...That was my version of Twenty Questions. I wanted to pull some of the photos from my scrapbook that had not been posted before. Most of them have not seen the light of day for over 20 years, so I hope you enjoyed seeing them, and responding to the questions. My goal with this was not so much to copycat Rube's "Where in the City" thread, but to talk more about some of the places around SDC that have changed and show you a few of the citizens of the past I remember so well. Hope you have enjoyed this game. I'm going to give it a rest for a while, but sometime in the future I'll pull out the photo albums again. Most of the questions were easy to answer, I only stumped you all once. You all know alot about that special theme park built above a cave the the beautiful Missouri Ozarks!!!   ;) :D ;D

I still have many photos in that scrapbook that have not been posted, and alot of things in my personal work files from that time...old company newsletters, scripts, costume shop reciepts, pay stubs, EVERYTHING I got from management while working there, I kept. It's all been closed up in my files, just waiting for sdcfans to appear so the files can be OPENED again!  ;)

Junior,
Really enjoyed the entire series of Mystery Photo shots and I appreciate the time it took to put them together.  I think they added a little bit of extra magic for me because the bulk of the time I spent at SDC as a kid was just after the time frame that these were taken...they are pictures of SDC as I remember it.  I don't remember the rainmaker or diving bell, but everything from GM to the blackpowder shooting demonstrations, to John Corbin, to the costumes the citizens were wearing matches perfectly to my memories from SDC in the 80's and 90's.  Thanks again for all your hard work and if you find more please post!

Thanks, I'll pull a few more photos out of the scrapbook sometime again. This is really a fun little game for off season. Right now there is a lot going on, and summer is here...so many will be going to the park and creating a few more memories worth repeating. We'll concentrate on that for now! :)
