Do you wear yours or not? Please explain either way.
I had a bad DUI accident back in 2000, & if i would have not had it on i probably would of hit the steering wheel & or windshield. I have always worn mine since i started driving, it makes me feel safe. My mother does not wear hers & it makes me nervous for her, she is so short that she is right up on the wheel.
Interesting topic.
I always wear mine. In fact, it is so second nature for me to put my seatbelt on that I do it subconsciously without even thinking about it. On the other hand, my father refuses to wear his. The only time he puts his on is when he gets pulled over by a police officer. :P
my car has none!
Really it doesn't, a 1950 Pontiac has no seat belts. But in my daily driver I non wear it. With a daughter and wife I have too much to lose as the sole breadwinner. and even if I drive safe, it could be someone else that causes the accident. I did not used to wear one locally in my old truck, but highway always wore one.
Sorry guys, dont wear it,,, I dont think it should be a law to wear it either..... I am old enough to drink, vote, die for my country........ I dont need to be told to wear a belt.....
HOWEVER,. when it somes to small children., some of these parents dont use their head, so i dont mind the PTB trting to protect the little ones..
AND!!!, when i used to ride street bikes, I also didnt wear a helmet, and i would not ride into missouri because it was a helmet wearing state....
Sorry everybody, you may not like what i feel... BUT it is the USA and it is one of our rights to speak!! and you did ask... LOL... ;D
YO DUDES! Click it or ticket! ;D

I am a huge advocate of wearing a seatbelt, but I completely agree with you! I think a legal adult should have the right to choose whether, or not they want to wear a seatbelt. I insist on wearing a seatbelt, but that doesn't mean that you should be forced to. :)
thanks Ozark, :)
Well i am a firm believer that the goverment does force its hand to much but in this case i must say that the seat bealt laws are a good thing. You might say u dont want to wear it and its your right but what does your family say when you are dead from an accident you could have survived with your belt on. Also you have to look at the history of roadway saftey and you will see that there has been a dramatic decress in fatality wrecks. This decrese in deaths means a decrease in insurance rates because there is less of a liability for the insurance companys. You also have to look at your children yes you say u must buckle them up but what kind of example are you setting for them. Once they turn 16 and are on there own they wont wear it because Dad or Mom never did and then get in a wreck and die and that is all on u. There is no argument to be made that a seat bealt is not a good idea.
Wearing a seatbelt should be a personal decision, and a personal responsibility. I think every person should have the right to chose whether they want to remain buckled into a car, or smash through the front windshield. That's the great thing about it. If someone chooses to not buckle up, then the only person they are hurting is themselves. It's not like smoking in a restaurant where others are forced to breathe in second hand smoke. Smokers know that cigarettes are bad for their own health, but as long as they don't make someone else breathe it too, then it shouldn't be a problem. Again, I am a huge supporter of wearing a seatbelt, and seatbelts do save lives. However, your own safety should be your own choice, not the governments. :)
I always wear my seatbelt, mostly out of habit because growing up my mom wouldn't let the car move until everybody had a seatbelt on. A senior from the local high school died almost a week ago in a car accident. They said its because she wasn't wearing a seatbelt, but how could they know that was the reason she didn't make it? There are many things that could happen in a car crash that have nothing to do with a seatbelt, so I'm not saying either way you should or should not wear one. I just wear one because I click without even thinking about it.

Oh it's usually obvious when the lack of a seatbelt causes a death in an auto collision.
I too am irked that the government has once again been able to take something personal and slap laws on it. I see the arguments for it, and while I don't disagree it still makes me worry that we are quickly loosing our ability to put our foot down on these types of intrusions. I don't really know how much worse people want it to get before they start taking a more active role in their government.
But I digress, I don't want to get too political here, I'd just rather ask why than why not in this case (and many others).
Great responses everyone, Thank You.
My name is Trams and I am an avid seatbelt wearer. I didnt like to at first. But its kinda a monkey see monkey do with the kid and I try to be fair with him when I can. Now I dont notice it and miss it if I forget to put it on. Its become a security blanket of sorts. But if someone else dont want to wear their seat belt thats their decision. I dont mind either way.

Exactly! As a
responsible parent, you have
chosen to wear your seatbelt to set an example for your child. You didn't need any laws to force you to teach your child about safety. However, there is always an exception to every rule, and I am one of them. Going back to my father, he never wears his seatbelt, even when I was a child myself. Yet, here I am as an adult making the choice to wear mine each, and every time I get into a car.
Wearing my seat belt is second nature / force of habit for me. I don't even realize I am doing it, its like starting the car for me.
Just the other day for instance, I drove up the street to my aunt's house, probally 8 houses up the street from ours, put my seat belt on. Like I said second nature.
I like what Trams said about it being a 'security blanket of sorts,' that's what it is for us as well, it just feels weird without wearing it.
Ditto Ozark, thanks again ;D
OK so putting laws and government aside why would you choose to not wear something that increases then chance of you surviving a crash?
For the same reason people choose to smoke knowing full well that it can cause all sorts of health problems. Cuz they can.
Because they can is kind of a silly reason. Hey once they get in a crash or get lung cancer (from smoking) we can all help pay there doctors expenses by paying higher premiums!
I've been gone for a while and just popped back in as of last week.
Sometimes I wear mine and sometimes I don't. What I don't understand is why seatbelt laws are compulsary and wearing a helmet on a motorcycle is optional. ??? ??? ???
<Soapbox>
That being said I don't think it should be a law that you have to wear your seatbelt. The cops are just out to make money, it really doesn't have all that much to do with saftey.
Gotta make that quota somehow!!!
</soapbox>
This is a point of discussion in many classes, my stats say:
Illinois and Iowa-No Helmet
27 have limited usage laws -under certain ages usually 17-20yrs
21 have all riders (including MO)
Would you choose to ride PK or FITH with no restraint? you might make it if you hold on....but would you really want to take a chance?

Despite popular belief, that is actually just a myth. True, the courts receive some income from traffic ticket fines, but in reality there is no such thing as a money making "quota." The police officer simply has to do what he gets paid a set salary to do, and that is to enforce the law. At least where I live. :)

Haha, well since practically the only thing to hold on to while riding PowderKeg is the restraints, I think I will keep them. ;D
I always wear mine. I started doing so before it was the law, and I still do so even where it's not the law (New Hampshire).
I started riding motorcycles when helmets were mandatory almost everywhere, but I wear a helmet even now that it's not.
That said, I strongly oppose mandatory helmet and seat belt laws. I've never smoked, and I hate smoking, but I also strongly oppose smoking bans.
thanks KB. ;D
I was thinking again about this...my thoughts are that even if I was going at a Flooded Mine pace down the road and would not need a belt, what if someone collided with me going PK pace?
I know it was outlandish to bring up the analogy in the first place, but as a teacher and coach ov "invincible 16 yrs olds with new driver's licenses" I field these issues alot, but true PK goes 60mph, so does your car, and you know you are going upsode down, so you buckle up...but if the ride was not predictable and you did not know what the path would look like, would you take your chances and go unrestrained?
I think most people who chose to not wear a seatbelt understand the consequences, but for whatever personal reason have chosen to take the risk. Everyone has the right to be in control of their own safety I suppose, even if it is dangerous. Some folks just like living on the edge. :P
I love my seatbelt however! It makes me feel like I am about to strap in for a rollercoaster ride! ;D
I agree totally, personal preference, I just like to make people question things sometimes!
I will be like the ride operators on Wildfire once my daughter is old enough to drive (many years from now!) going by pulling on the seatbelt/harness then giving the thumbs up!
Just be sure to keep your arms, and legs inside the vehicle at all times. :P
Do you wear ya'rs or not? Please give explanation wheather you do or not.
I used to not wear mine till i was involved in a 1 vehicle minor accident in the snow, of my own doing, i hit my head on the side window & steering wheel. I started wearing mine after that, & Thank God i did.. When i was a alchoholic years later, i crashed a vehicle & had a BAD accident, 1 vehicle again, & if i wouldnt of had it on i may of ended up in the windsheild. I hit a power poll & into a drainage ditch to a abrupt stop. I hit so hard it knocked my shoes off! I had passed out behind the wheel. Broke the transfer case of a 4X4 in half, & shoved the right side firewall back afew inches. Sorry so graffic..
i think we have touched on this topic before, and of course everybody had their own views/opinions..
I am a bit of a nonconformist, I DONT wear seat belts, because "they" (the government), tells me i have too.. My Strong feelins are,
I am over 21..
I pay taxes,
This is a free country, (for now anyway, another discussion..LOL),
i should have the option to wear or not...........
HOWEVER, I do think there should be a mandatory law for kids to wear them, Lets face it..Not all parents protect their young ones while in the car. SO i feel that trying to protect is ok.. of course, after the child grows up they will wear belts automatically,,, and thats ok too...
I grew up in kansas, where helemts are also not mandatory, unlike missouri where you have to wear them... Thus the reason why i never rode in missouri,,
I realize there are all sorts of "stats" that can be quoted for and against either law,,, .....
but you asked...LOL...
i respect ya'r post sanddune, my mom feels the same way about the goverment trying to control things.
and you may be right, we may have dicussed this before. my memory sucks, i'm just trying to fire up the ol' board. ::)

Thanks rube,
HOw do, The site has been a little anti-climatic the last 48 hours or so....LOL ;D
Always. Number one, that stupid beeping in the car won't stop unless I put it on. Number two, our health insurance doesn't have to cover injuries if we are not buckled in. Number three, I have too much to loose.
I don't usually wear a seat belt for normal driving around town or going to work. But I do wear one when I get out on the highway for an extended trip.
That being said...I feel that being made to wear one by law is an infringement on my constitutional right to "liberty and the pursuit of happiness." For me, they're really irritating on my neck, and make me feel encumbered. The same goes for the helmet law.
As far as lives being saved by a seat belt as opposed to no seat belt, there is a difference but it's not all that great, something like 10-15 percent. They may help with head-on collisions, but for side impacts they're next to useless and probably contribute to greater injuries.
Anyway, that's my two cents.
They were helpful when I rolled a car in a ditch late at night and was left hanging upside down in my seat instead of being under the car.
My wife and I were in an accident in Memphis in 1995. I wore a seatbelt, but left the hospital in three days. She did not, and left the hospital in about a month or so. I reccomend all folks wear a seatbelt, no matter how long or shor the trip is. Your life is worth more than some discomfort while driving or riding.

Yup! Do it for yourself and loved ones.
