Title: St. Louis Cardinals
Post by: Parson B Ready on October 31, 2011, 12:36:11 PM
In the words of the late Jack Buck "I don't believe what I just saw." Congratulations to the Cardinals on their improbable, phenomenal World Series Run.  And thanks to manager Tony LaRussa for all the memories.  LaRussa announced today that he is retiring as their manager.

Now to the speculation of Pujols, and who will be the manager.

Will they promote from within? Oquendo? McGwire? Ozzie Smith?

who will take Dave Duncan's spot now?

Lots of questions...

The Cardinals were awesome the last month and a half of the season.  I've heard people say they backed in to the post-season, but I disagree.  They charged in full speed ahead.  Yes, they were helped by the collapse of the Braves, but that's not the same as backing in.  Congratulations to the Cardinals and their fans!

LaRussa will be missed.  I didn't always understand his moves, but no one can argue with his results.  I think Francona would be a good replacement for him.  Anyone else will be quite a step down in ability.  I think that Duncan will most likely retire to tend to his wife.  She's not in the best of health.

Pujols...I think it will take one heck of an offer to persuade him to leave the Cardinals.  There are many reasons not even associated with baseball for him to stay in St. Louis.  But...who can say.

Spot on. That's exactly what I've been saying. TLR could be maddening, but he had a system and he stuck with it. Duncan won't take the job, and will probably back away from the dugout/bullpen completely. I don't know Oquendo well enough to judge what kind of job he would do, but I know he's liked and respected by the players. I believe Francona would be a good fit, but he's had personal life issues that affected him in Boston; I don't know if they've been fixed yet.

As for Pujols... it would take one heckuva lot more money to get him to leave St. Louis, than to get him to stay. The word last year was they were dickering over the details of roughly $200 million for 9 years. I bet it would take at least $30 million a year for 5+ years to get him away from the Cards.

As per Dave Duncan, I've been hearing that he would like to stay on with the Cardinals...if the new manager will have him.  Little surprised at that but I'll be happy to have him.

They've interviewed 6 guys for the managers position so far.  Mike Matheny, Jose Oquendo, Chris Maloney, Joe McEwing...all have ties to the club; Ryan Sandberg and Terry Francona do not have ties to the club.

I am still supporting my main choice from my Oct 31 post, OQUENDO!!!!

Matheny has no ML coaching experience, and Sanderg has some minor league experience (but he just was tired of not being promoted by the Cubs I guess).

As a kid I was a huge Ryan Sandberg fan, if he gets the job I will become a Cardinals fan for sure, he has proved to be a really good manager, Cubs are dumb for not even considering him
