Title: Lake Ozark
Post by: StaceySue on September 24, 2011, 09:38:32 AM
I just thought I would pop in here for a moment.  I am in Lake Ozark for an annual conference I attend most years.  Anyway, we drove around, and we stopped at the Dogpatch Arcade and Store last night.  Fun times!  There were a few people wandering around, but it's not very busy here this time of year.  Even the outlet stores are pretty slow for a Friday night.  Mini-golf and go-karts were going in the area, but they were also not too busy.  Still, I enjoy the fun vibe here at the lake!

I've been to Dogpatch up there at Lake of the Ozarks. Fun roadside attraction from years gone by. Glad to hear its still open and operating.

I popped in a few years back just to check it out. If you are unaware, it is much like Ozarkland in Branson.

years ago we sue to spend a week every spring BEFORE the season started at Bagnell dam area.   Loved that whole area!

Complete different look and attitude if you are there before the "toursit season" starts :)

I was there after the tourist season ended, it was a bit chilly, and the strip was dead. It did make for some great photos though...

And no, these were not taken in the heyday of the Hoff, and the TV show in the mid 80's, these were from about 2 years ago. When I saw it, I HAD to take a picture of it. Just think how popular this was when it debuted...how it more than likely became a bit less popular during the 90's, and now how with the children of the 70s-80s starting families see this and want their kids to take a ride with Kitt. Good thing they held on to it! I will abstain from answering as to if I took a ride in it that day or not.

This one from The Lake is a close second to Knight Rider
A Kris Kraft-ish ride from the 1960's

I ahd never been there before. We would never go to "the lake" we would always go to Table Rock. My wife was getting an award at a covenetion down there, and I tagged along. When she went early for photos before the ceremony, I ran out for some pics. I took about 250 in the span of about 10 minutes! It was great! so much to see and I had so little time to see it.

There's still an Ozarkland in Camdenton. There was one in Osage Beach also but I think the Hwy 54 bypass took it out a couple of years ago. On second thought, that was Walnut Bowls and Shepherd Hills Case outlet that got taken out. Ozarkland might still be there. Now that the expressway is in I have no reason to stop in Osage Beach anymore, just pass through there on our way to Branson.  ;D

Dogpatch, Rebel Arcade and a few others still plug along on the strip, but they've definitely seen better days. The Lake area took a different turn back in the late 70's early 80's than Branson did. They decided they wanted to cater to the rich and pretty much tossed the family friendly atmosphere they used to have. Osage Beach and Lake Ozark used to bear quite a resemblance to the Branson of today, but no more. Yes there's a go kart track here and there, but for the most part it's boat dealers, bars and condo's. There used to tons of mom and pop resorts, much like you find on Indian Point now, but most of them have succumbed to the track hoe and condo complex. And yes, I do see some of this in Branson but not nearly to the extent LOTO has. This is a lot of the reason that even though we live 15 minutes from the lake we rarely do anything there and why we fell in love with Branson. It brings back a lot of memories from our childhood and love seeing my kids enjoy it as well. To each his own I suppose, I don't complain much about how the Lake has been developed, I just choose to voice my opinion with my wallet.

I'm not sure if you went too branson as a kid but it has changed so much some for the good and some for the bad, i do miss the ol mom and pop down there before the big corporation took over.

It was right in the middle of Osage Beach. Just west of the 42/54 Junction it would be across the highway from where Home Depot is now. It's all gone now except for the tower for the round open elevator thing (can't remember what it was called). The park has been gone for years, but the Hwy 54 bypass took the remainder of the land. See what I mean about how things have changed?
