For those of you who dont have the dvds at your disposal, tv station WGN Chicago will start airing the five SDC episodes of "The Beverly Hillbillies" tomorrow at 8am & 8:30 am Eastern, 7am & 7:30am Central starting TOMORROW. They run them back to back, so it'll be two tomorrow, two Monday and one Tuesday.
I already have them set to record!
Nice catch andy! got my recorder set also.. thanks
Do they still sell the DVDs at SDC?
I was supposed to pick one up for somebody last time I was there, and I forgot.
yes the DVDs are available,
I think i saw them in the HH over on the west wall near the cave entrance. ???
could not wait until next week to watch the shows! classics, great oneliners. funny!
the first show has NO SDC in it, But the 2nd one does..
shows the bridge coming up past Shad the blacksmith,, And he gets in ion the converstaion a couple of time..
Also the hotel
general store.
you can see what i think is the mine restaurant in the back ground,
wilderness church
the water tower..
VERY COOL!!
Thanks again andy for letting us know about this!
iF YOU LOOK through those episodes you will also see Shad Heller, Pete Herschend, Chick Allen, June Ward (As Elly Mae's stand in) and other noted SDC citizens of the day. You will catch a glimpse of the candle shop, the basketweaving shop, the mill at the AP (At the time, the float trip) interior of Sullivan's Mill, and glimpses of the McHaffie Homestead, the church, and the medicine show wagon. Since my family and I visited the season after the filming, those episodes bring back memories for me because SDC looked the same as it did in my first visit as an 8 year old in 1970.

It's fun seeing the episodes on TV, I'm glad I have the DVD. However, one mild disappointment that the DVD did not include some bonus material like out takes of shots filmed at SDC, or maybe a little biography with history behind the five segments...they could have interviewed Donna Douglas or Max Baer Jr. They are the only primary cast members still living. Jed, Granny, Mr. Drysdale, Mrs. Drysdale, and Miss Jane are all gone.
didnt see pete, but probably would not know him anyway..
shad was very obvious and had a full conversation with jed in the 2nd show..
At one time jed even mentioned he may go fishing with jim owens!
it is great,, anxiuos to see tomorrows shows!
When Granny and Elly Mae go to the basketweaving shop, in the crowd is a tall, slender fellow with red hair and beard. That's Pete. They show several good shots of him in that scene. If I am not mistaken, he may pop up in the candle shop scene which I think is in the same episode.
I will be watching, have not seen that episode yet,,. thanks!
Glad I could be of help to everyone! I was watching them this morning. Hey Junior, when Granny is talking to Jed on top of the hotel in SDC episode 2, she mentions all of the area men that are already married and she names Jack Herschend.
I dont know if I have mentioned this or not before. I know I have told you all that I know of several known spots of Paul Henning around here in Independence, Mo. But I found one thing particularly interesting where Paul's parents are buried. Just a few yards from where they are buried, there is a stone with the name, I kid you not, Clampet. One T at the end, not two. Now, I dont know if this is where Paul got the name for the show, but I find it very coincidental!
Beverly Hillbillies is my favorite TV show of all time! My grandma made sure we got to see that when we went to her house. Grandpa recorded almost all of the episodes so we would never run out. I think my uncle still has the tapes, and I'm really glad my family raised me on the stuff they did! They are one reason I'm here right now!! In a way, Granny reminds me of my grandma (extremely hard worker, raised in the south, hated living in the city, nobody touches her kitchen). After both of my grandparents died, since the house is like a "meet-in-the-middle" place for my dad's side of the family, that's where we still celebrate 4th of July, Christmas, etc. Even though my grandma died about 3 years ago, we're still afraid to use the kitchen too much, cuz that, and the porch swing were HER places!
My DVR was set. I will be watching them this evening :D

That's where they were when I got mine during the 50th Birthday Party celebration.
I attended and graduated from Paul Henning's high school (William Chrisman in Independence, MO). I've always been proud of that fact.
So I have a question
Was just watching the Beverly Hillbillies and was wondering about the Hotel. Back then is that what the interior actually looked liked?
AND i was wondering about the wagon granny was selling the "medicine" and "mud" out of.
is that something that was there then, gone now. Or has it been revamped into something else?

No.
We have discussed this on another thread. It is a soundstage. :)
Hey tinaalsgirl,
Are you still in Independence? I can point you to another Henning spot. Do you know or remember where Beebe's Batteries is on 24 Highway?? Right behind it is a big grassy open area where a few steps go up to a house that isnt there anymore. That's where Paul lived as a child thru his teen years.
Dang I wish I reD this sooner
DID the inside of the hotel on Beverly Hillibillies reflect the interior design of the ice cream parlor at the time? Well, not really. The room on TV appears to be roughly the same size, but it was not decorated like that, it really was not too much different than the main room is today, although decoration is different. The interior of the hotel on TV was shot at the regular CBS TV set in California. Only the exterior of the hotel was shot at SDC.

The medicine wagon in Beverly Hillbillies is the same one that was at SDC during that time. Prior to Rainmaker, the Medicine Show featured a "huckster" professor who made wild claims about the benefits of his home made drug. At the time, candy "medicine" was sold after the show to the kids. Of course, nowadays you could not be politically correct selling candy "medicine" to kids. The funny little medicine show was shipped to SDC in Tennessee, and was also utilitzed for a time during the Dollywood days in some fashion or another. I was surprised in my August, 2010 visit to the park to see what I think is the original medicine wagon set up next to Carrie's Candle Shop. All "medicine wagon" signs have been removed from it, and it has been painted differently...but it appears to me to be the real medicine wagon from long ago. We would have to check with Zephon or Copper or any other current citizens who participate her to verify that. I think the medicine wagon is simply used as a stage nowadays for some of the specialty acts that pass through town, or maybe by some of the resident musicians and entertainers for occasional shows.
I still miss "Piano Pete" from the old days at Hannah's. I was wondering if anyone from this site has been in the upper floor of the Hotel/Hannah's? If so what's it like up there? I've seen "street shows" where citizens come out the door of the upper rooms.
Two photos of the Medicine Wagon in it's heyday at SDC at the Flickr site:

I miss Piano Pete, too! Upstairs at the ice cream parlor was used for many years as a staging area for the street troupe. Storage for props, and an area to change clothes and take a break. Don't know what it's used for now. Zephon, Copper, or other current citizens part of this group will have to respond.
Let me try the flickr site address again as it did not appear to work on my last posting:
