Title: SOTH map
Post by: thelarsonsix on May 13, 2011, 08:08:32 PM
I'm trying to find where the places mentioned in the book (Compton Ridge, Mutton Hollow, etc) would be located today. I think Compton Ridge is pretty much hwy 265, right? What about the other places? I'm looking for the actual topographical features.

Sammy's Lookout is a rock outcropping on Dewey Bald Mt. overlooking Mutton Hollow. The Signal Tree was a large tree (no longer there) on top of Dewey Bald. Marvel Cave was used as the inspiration for the mine allegedly located on Dewey Bald. There is a cave on the Shepherd of the Hills property that the tour jeeps pass by, but don't think there is any significance to it. Mandy Ford's Cabin was located on Hwy. 265 and probably is still there on private property next to a home. Uncle Ike's Post Office is at Notch at the horseback riding place. Of course, Jim Lane Cabin was torn down a few years ago...that is a real shame, it should have been preserved better. At one time there was a Wash Gibbs Cabin, and a Fiddlin' Jake's Cabin, but don't know if the two still exist. Fiddlin' Jake's Cabin was further down Highway 265, I think. The Wash Gibbs Cabin was gone a long time ago, I think. Compton's Ridge is the ridge that Highway 265 runs on. Compton Ridge Campground, SDC's the Wilderness...right there on it. Also stop by the Evergreen Cemetery near the junction of Hwy. 76 and Indian Pt. Road at the SDC entrance way to see the final resting places of may Shepherd of the Hills folks, plus several SDC folks like Shad and Molly Heller, and Miss Mary Herschend. Hugo Herschend has a memorial stone there.

So that would be the draw that runs sort of east and west down at the bottom of 376?

Thank you Junior. The geographical features are what I'm most interested in, but I appreciate the other info also. I knew about the Post Office and the cemetery but did not know there was a cave on the SOTH farm. We're going to do the jeep tour this year and probably the trail rides also. I'm going to try to visit as many places in the book as I can. It may seem strange to someone who's lived around there all their life but I just love that part of the Ozarks.

Another interesting thing to do is visit the home of Rose O'neal, the cupie doll gal. Her home Bonniebrook is located just north of Branson on Highway 65. She was one of the most popular female illustrators of the early 20th century. She and some family members are also buried at the site. Some of her sculptures and artwork is on display. Take the home tour. You will learn a lot. You can also find out more about Shepherd of the Hills and the area history by visiting Ralph Foster Museum at College of the Ozarks. It is cheap to get into the museum. While you are there, visit the Star School, Edwards Mill, and, at the museum, you will be able to see a genuine Silver Dollar City Butterfield Stagecoach...they don't even have one of those at the park anymore!

The SOTH cave is shallow. There was talk of blasting it out to see if it connected to a bigger cave system, but that would have had to happen right under the highway, so the idea was scrapped.

You mentioned Hugo had a memorial marker in the cemetery, so where is he buried?

Got to be blunt about Hugo...don't know if he is actually buried in Evergreen Cemetery or someplace up around Chicago where the family came from. Mary is buried at Evergreen, and my guess is Jack and Pete and their wives will be, too. Don't know about the third and fourth generations.

Junior, do you remember the cabin that was a bookstore selling the SOTH book?  I haven't been in it since I was a teenager.  It would have been past SOTH and on the right side of the road as you were heading to Kimberling City.  I know my directions are poor; I can see that cabin in my head, but can't place it on a map.

The Old Shepherd bookstore.

There's some discussion in another thread; read betamike's post, third from the top.

Here is something some of you many not know about that stretch of land between Shepherd of the Hills and the highway junction that gos to the campground on one branch, SDC on the other. Mary's house is the house that sits on the left side of the road just past Shepherd of the Hills. The family or the company have utilitzed the house for other purposes in recent years. Zephon, Copper, or some of the other current insiders will have to chime in here as to what it is used for.

I had always heard, but of course had no way to verify, that SOTH and SDC owned all the land between them except for the Old Shepherd Bookstore, and that they were paying the widow handsomely to not sell.

True or not, it's a nice thought. The unrestrained development of Branson (with government zoning), versus the carefully controlled expansion of SOTH and SDC (watching after their own privately-controlled long term interests)

Leaving Branson and hitting SOTH meant the end of billboards and hawkers, until well past SDC. I think it still does. And you know the property between them is worth much more than a fortune.

It is my understanding that SDC and Shep. Hills owned all the land between Shep. Hills and SDC. I was told in the late 70's that this was to preserve the woods as they were...to prevent encroachment by developers, and to make it feel as if people headed to SDC from Branson were indeed going back in time to the 1880s. You'll notice to this day there is no development out that way...I was very disappointed when Stonebridge Village added the gate at the intersection of Hwy 76 and 265. It is also my understanding, but I don't know if it is true, that Stonebridge VIllage was developed by SDC/Herschends. Again, current insiders will have to verify or deny this.

Not undeniable proof by any means, but....

As a side note, according to findagrave.com this is called Twin Pines cemetery which is connected to the old Evergreen cemetery. It also says it was established in 1955. Could be coincidence, but that just happens to be the year Hugo died.
