I will be going this weekend

Going to see Sanctus Real @ 3 on Saturday.

If anyone else is going, you have to call (should have in February) and reserve a wristband to get in to see the shows.

When I worked on park we called Young Christians Weekend, "Young Heathens Weekend," because so many parents and church group leaders let the kids roam the park without adult supervision, and kids will be kids, getting themselves into trouble one way or the other. We discussed this on another thread a long time ago, but I worked on the park in the early 80s when the kids bounced up and down on the swinging bridge until a wire broke on it. The bridge did not collapse, but "citizens" got the kids off the bridge and it was closed for several weeks after until repairs could be made. That is just one example. YCW is a crazy time on park. Personally, I'd advoid the weekend, but if you are determined to see the entertainment, which is always good...get there early, spend the whole day, but remember, it will be crowded so take your time and don't get in a rush, anywhere.

My 3 teens are going with their church youth group, and I must admit I'm glad I'm not. I love the kids to death, and think it will be a great time to worship and celebrate our faith, but I've also always said there's nothing more obnoxious than a Church youth group.

I really think the kids that come to YCW these days are not nearly as rowdy as they were during the time that Junior is talking about.  Yes, they do have a good time, but it's been a long time since I've seen something torn up due to them.  Shoplifting and the like?  Yeah, it happens, but don't think for one minute that it doesn't happen every day the park is open.  And you're 100 times more likely to see adults getting into a fight over something or other than these kids.

Just like with any crowd, 99% of them are good people there to have a good time.  Don't let Junior scare ya.

zephon, i am sure that is true.. i was not meaning to say that YCW is the only weekend they have problems.

I forget who, one of us had a camera stolen last fall. I think while riding wildfire.

Larsonsix: Yeah, there was a WHOLE bunch of graffiti on the walls in the queue for Wildfire, especially at the front row; the ones with dates were all from YCW last year.

I didn't even go to YCW when I was in Youth Group.  I refused to be associated with all of the nastiness that goes on down there that weekend.  I really wanted to take my in laws when they came, but that isn't the impression I want them to leave with.  If they don't like it one time, they won't ever give it another try.  To me, making a monthly trip isn't worth the line cutting, cussing, pushing, and lines that will be there this weekend.

During my middle school years, I attended YCW a few times.  My youth leader encouraged us to invite friends who may not be Christians to come.  I'm not saying that a group of young Christians wouldn't be rowdy, but often there are teens present from all backgrounds without a lot of supervision like someone else mentioned.  Some teens who are there would never attend SDC with their families.  Some of those teens haven't been much of anywhere.  Just a thought.

Your going to have problems, regardless who/what they are associated with.

Quotehey sure did a number on the queue area for Giant Barn Swing when it opened that weekend for the first time.

I was in the park shortly after that weekend and it was scribbled up, even when they paint over it you can see the depressions.
Honestly I saw that and noted the q and how closed in it was, I think they may have been asking for that.

so.... we are heading to Branson on Saturday.  We would like to hit SDC twice during our stay.  We have never been to SDC (or Branson) before.  We have 3 little ones (almost 6 yr old, 2.5 yr old, & 10 month old).  The park is open Sun, Thur & Fri during the time we are there.  I was going to go Sun & then either Thurs/Fri....should we not go Sun due to YCW crowd?  We would be there from park open (9 am) until early afternoon.

What I previously posted here about YCW occurred about 1981. That was 30 years ago. It's an interesting story, and a true one, but I have complete faith in what Zephon said...things like that probably don't occur like they did then. Don't anyone stay away from SDC just because I related a story about what happened so long ago. Go to the park and enjoy yourselves.  :)

well 1 thing to consider is the YCW crowd will be teenagers! :P

Your kids will be more interested in HDH..  oops sorry Half dollar holler, and the grand exposition and maybe grand exposition.  Therefore the crowds as such wont bother the kids and their playing at all on sunday!.
As far as you and the wife are concerned you will be able to ride a lot easier if you wait to ride thurs/friday.
Dont let sunday scare you off!

we are staying at Stormy Point Village via my parent's timeshare.  Other than Dixie Stampede, I'm not sure we will be doing any shows.  With the ages of our little ones...shows are kinda hard.  My mom-in-law really wants us to do Sights & Sounds...so maybe DH or myself will do that with my DD6 one afternoon if it works out.

I've looked at Showboat Belle...but not sure if we'd like it or not.  I'm the only one with the SDC season pass...so I think I'm the only one that gets the good discount.

Thanks for the links...I'll check out the attractions one.

The youth groups will have to be home Sunday night so I would suspect by mid afternoon it would start thinning out pretty quickly.

Not all teenagers are bad kids you guys!!  ::) Just kiddin, I totally understand where you guys are coming from, some kids are just brats and don't respect the great opportunity that YCW could present.

My sister will be able to attend with a friend's youth group and I will ask her what she thought of it all. I think it could be smart if SDC provided well known Christian entertainment on select weekend nights in Echo Hollow. This would provide a good break for the regular Echo Hollow show, increase attendance on those weekends, but also maybe lighten the crowd levels for YCW so it isn't so crazy.

showboat is great. it is a little pricey without the season pass discount. I would dare say there would be things to do in town for less money that would be more kid orientated..

couple of freebees that are not "advertised is the fish hatcheries, where u can feed the fish. and the visitors center just south of table rockdam is good for the kids.

you can get discounts on the ducks! thats a great kids ride.

Ask if you want more suggestions, everybody here has their own favorites!

I was planning on going this weekend.

But now that I've found out it's Young Christian's Weekend I'm having serious second thoughts.

I'm thinking about cancelling my hotel reservation.

The problem is my wife is having surgery next week -- so we probably won't have another chance to go for several weeks or a month or more.

Also, I'm devoutly non-religious (agnostic). Ex-Catholic, basically.

Extra stuff: we have season passes & my sons are 2 & 5.

Should I still go?

GO!!

In my opinion your kids are young enough they will not be in the same area as the teenagers!  you will be in  HDH,, GE, GG.  None of the  teenagers should be any where near that area ;D

GO!!

Enjoy yourself.

When your sife gets back on her feet, then you can plan your 2nd trip!!!

Have Fun, and let us know how the trip went!

I got an email about the weekend in case you were planning:
QuoteThank you for your interest in Young Christians Day April 2. 2011. During this special event the park is open to the public, however, this is a special event for Christian Youth so all the resident performance venues will be replaced with special focus groups and rally's. There will be NO resident  SDC entertainment, the stages will be filled with Christian pop/rock and speakers targeted to teens), ofcourse the rides will be running

If attending, please be prepared for a large number of youths and teens on park. Traditionally attendance during this special event can be 20,000 plus and with the recent weather and the forecast for this weekend being extra nice this number will certainly hit that mark and perhaps more.

20,000 plus?  for the 3 day event?  Or just the main sat event.  20,000 for a couple of days is no big deal,  we dealt with that number opening weekend.

I have been during another weekend, and maybe it is because I teach middle/ high school that I wasn't too appauled by the actions of the kids. A few times I DID want to shush a few groups, but in groups, even the best of kids with the best of intentions/ beliefs can go astray. I am used to being around loud, obnoxious, inconsiderate kids, so this is no biggie. Last time I was there, some kids were wonderful, and I only saw a few "bad apples" practically running people over being loud, and disrespectful. I am looking forward to being at SDC, and Yes, I will write a good review of the visit!

Day 1 of YCW complete, much too much to post from an iPhone . I will put my whole review up by Monday. One more day to go...today wasn't too bad, a few big problems, but overall pretty smooth. One question for me to leave you with, Are the Beatles, more specifically, the song  Elanor Rigby Usually blasted modern rock style at Christian revivals/ gatherings? They sure were not 15 yrs ago when I was attending similar events.

The guitar solo, coupled with the semi mosh pit and screaming coming from the main gazebo on the square is where the music in question was being played.
Title: Re: Young Christians Weekend.
Post by: Junior on April 03, 2011, 08:41:13 AM
Again, another 30 year old memory...but back in my days on park, there was no venue large enough for the Christian music shows, so they set up a special stage on what used to be "C" lot for the Leon Patillo show held around 1980 or 1981. Now, they have Echo Hollow, Red and Gold, a much larger Gazebo, the Meetin' Hall, and so on. I have got to admit, for YCW, it does not bother me that the contemporary Christian music is being performed on park. I don't know why, because, if you think about it, the Moonlight Madness music is out of theme, too, and for some reason, THAT does bother me. LOL  :D

Title: Re: Young Christians Weekend.
Post by: rubedugans on April 03, 2011, 06:45:21 PM
Was the band upfront talented? yes. Were they Christians? more than likely. Was thier choice of songs the best one for a weekend for young Christians, probably not. The "mosh pit" as I mentioned earlier was more of a "jumping & bumping" to the music, and when the music would stop, and the dust would clear, all was well. I really felt that the choice of musicians for the MAIN SQUARE was a bit intense. Don't get me wrong, I was in a band in High school and college (no more than 15 yrs ago) we played the HEAVY stuff, but not touting it as something it was not. I have been to, and played at church rallys, and never was Eleanor Rigby, or and Beatles songs on the set list. The beatles top my list of favorite artists, but I know they are not suited well for SDC, or a youth rally. I have been to HUGE youth gatherings, and have seen everything from national recording acts playing Ska, Punk, Rock, and even roack music for the Pope, but this was a bit much at times. Maybe I missed the message of the song.

I know I am dwelling on one song, and I know a CA Christian band (Violet Burning) covered the song, this more than likely prompted these youths to play the song about "all the lonely people...where do they all belong?" Not at SDC! SO many other songs could have been covered that have much better meanings/ messages. The depression, desolation, loneliness could have been shown in another way to show God is the solution to all of these. Not you typical praise band, Good...yes...just not my cup of tea to have thrust upon me walking into SDC, but I was prepared for it, and the weekend was great otherwise.

Full review to come on the trip review 2011 thread!

I wanted to ask if there is a School day or Students Day or something? Because I was there in May 2008 (I believe May 16-17) and when my wife and I arrived, it looked like the junior high schools blew up and they all landed in SDC! Is this like a regular thing for students to have a school day there before the school year ends?? There were a load of school buses out in the parking lot too!

I dont know about a school day but as the school season starts to draw to a close I make it a point to take a trip on a Mon-Thurs.  This is just o avoid one of the kids days.  I am glad they go and enjoy themselves but the screaming and getting run over and crazy long lines for the rides makes me want to stay away.
