Title: What are your favorite Soap Operas?
Post by: dwfan on October 24, 2010, 06:18:31 PM
I know we all have a soap that we love to watch or maybe even used to watch in the past so post and tell about it. Mine were As the World Turns and Guiding Light. Me and my wife watched both of those all the time.

College Gameday Live.  That's about as much of a soap opera as I watch.

On a brighter note, the Chiefs won yesterday!!!  ;D

Sorry... if you're not a Chiefs fan, then I guess that wouldn't be a "brigher note."  But it is for me!!!  :D

Go Chiefs!  ;D I used to live in KC and got family up there that are HUGE chiefs fans. It's just been so long since we had anything to cheer about.

Wow boys, and girls off topic much? :P

I don't watch too many Soap Operas myself. As a young child I would spend the day with this lady who ran a daycare out of her house. She used to make me, and the other children watch Soap Operas with her all afternoon. After that, I was done with them. However, they seem to remain pretty popular even today.  :)

As for "real" soap operas, in college, I had a roommate who watched Days... constantly.  ::)

So, I started to really get into it, but quit watching after Marlena got possesed in 2001 or 2002... whenever that was.  About a couple of years ago, I watched an episode, and I SWEAR it felt as though I hadn't missed anything.  ::)

I still pretty much got the jist of the plotline, and still knew pretty much all of the characters (except that the babies born while I was watching are now 18 years old or older.  ???)

And it was then that I realized that soap operas were a complete and total waste of my time and I was soooooo glad I quit watching them. :)

Soap operas...continuing storyline in each episode, building on the previous episode...for some, that could be "House," or maybe the "CSI" programs...for me, HBO's weird and cutting edge program, "SIX FEET UNDER" was pretty fantastic.

Those are usually categorized as dramas. I LOVE House, but I definitely put that under drama rather than soap opera.

As for soaps... Well, I remember when my sister and I were really young, we would watch All My Children and One Life To Live with our mom. We never connected with the younger characters. Our favorites were always Vicky, Dorian, Adam, and Erica.
Title: Re: What are your favorite Soap Operas?

Soap Operas are shows where there is very little acting.  The characters almost always stand in one spot the entire time during a scene -- this way they only have to memorize minimal lines without worrying about emotional reponses and other cues that movement would require.

A Drama is a once-a-week show that features lots of actual acting and more in depth storylines.

Well, now that both ATWT and GL are off the only two shows I watch are The Young and the Restless, and Days of our Lives. I know alot of people aren't interested in soaps because they work, but, I personally think they are still popular.

I've got a great idea for a new soap opera..."Swoosh: Adventures of a Roller Coaster Rider!"  An intense and close look at the life of a guy who rides coasters for fun and for the media...all the ups and downs of his travel filled life!  ;D

I'm not sure what my FAVORITE Soap Opera is, but I can attest that my LEAST FAVORITE Soap Opera is dealing with teenage drama daily at school.  Sheesh!  Everyone seems to be extra-hormonal right now.  :o

Yah you should get a load of the middle schoolers...sheesh. SOme days I can't stand it they try to act 25 yrs old, followed up 2 minutes later by acting 7 yrs old. I don't need to travel to SDC for roller coasters, I just need to sit and watch.

That's exactly how it is at school. I got started watching soap operas when I was little, because my grandmother would watch them all afternoon it was always The Young and the Restless, Another World, As the World Turns, and General Hospital.

Anyone remember "Dark Shadows?" I was a little kid and watched it with mom, who was a housewife then. Barnabas Collins was my favorite character. It's funny to watch the videos of it now at how bad some of the storylines and acting were. They did the shows live, and I remember set pieces getting knocked over! This was network television -ABC. Times have changed.

I do remember dark shadows. Not sure, but, hasn't that show been off for almost 40 years. Also, I like the fact evrything is pre-recorded now, so , you don't see them messing things up.

Real life is enough drama for me.

Jesus said it best in Matthew 6:34:  "...do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

I too remember Dark Shadows. I use to watch the re-runs of it with mom. Even at such a young age, I remember thinking of how poor the acting was and how slow the show seemed to run. Haven't thought of that show in a long time, think I might look it up on YouTube tonight.
I also remember watching The Young and the Restless with my Grandmother when I would stay at her house. At 11:00am you had BETTER turn the channel over to her show! Of course at 6:00 my Grandfather would then take over with "The Wheel." ohh, good times good times!  :D

Don't you remember Dark Shadows SandDuneRider? It was a gothic horror soap opera! Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and so on. Cheesy, but fun! Rent a DVD at your local video store and watch a couple hours of this old show. It is now very campy, very 2nd rate, and funny to watch.  ;)

Dark Shadows needless to say isn't as good in acting as modern day soap operas. Also, Jonnhy Depp is working on a Dark Shadows movie based on the TV show.

POW! ZAP! (Anyone remember the old Green Hornet shows that had Bruce Lee as Cato?) They were done similar to the old Adam West and Burt Ward Batman episodes. You'll notice Adam West has made a career out of campy. His voice is featured in one of the current sarcastic animated shows now...I think Family Guy...as "Mayor" Adam West. He's as silly as ever.

All My Children and One Life to Live are moving online. They will have new episodes in the same format and quality according to the company Prospect Park which has picked them up. They also said it would be the home of more cancelled shows in the future. Maybe some of our favorite primetime shows can migrate their. lol. Also, Charlie's Angels was cancelled by ABC. The show the chew which replaced All My Children apparently is the lowest rated show in daytime TV it has 1.78 million viewers while The Talk which replaced As the World Turns has 1.84 million and it's the 2nd lowest rated.

Isn't this crazy? I've watched Y&R since I can remember along with Guiding Light. I was so sad when they cancelled that one. Then in the 90's my G'ma got me into As the World Turns so when that went off, well expected more soaps to go. I never watched the others so can't say if good or bad thing. Now I'm finding myself checking in on Bold & Beautiful soap .......hubby thought after I had to have 3 soaps now down to 1 he was happy so if I start another, oh dear!  :D

I have now found myself hooked on GENERAL HOSPITAL again! It has seriously gotten good! Theirs the Kate Howard D.I.D. storyline, a few One Life to Live characters have come over, the Luke Spencer/ Anna Devane/ Tracy Quartermaine triangle, plus Felicia is back (hoping she gets back together with Mac), crazy Heather Webber is back on the show. I've found myself watching it every single day now. I quit watching it a few years back but now I'm happy to say I love it. Everybody should check it out!

I saw it and I really liked it. I have to say this is going to be the show I watch on Wednesdays at 9. I'm done with Criminal Minds. That show has gotten out of hand with the violence and it's very disturbing (It's always been disturbing but seems like it's got worse) Anyways, I'll be watching DALLAS tomorrow night. The show got positive reviews and I looked on TVBYTHENUMBERS and it's premiere was the #1 cable show. Wouldn't that be something if it became the phenomenon it once was? lol

Bobby is married to "Ann",,,, NO reference to Pam at all,  So i dont know if they are playing here as dead? and Bobby remarried..... OR they are trying to pass Ann off as the 1st wife...??

From Wikipedia-

Season 10 saw Pam leave Bobby after she was involved in a car crash which resulted in her suffering severe burns. She disappeared from the hospital and Bobby never saw her again.

Series finale

In the final episode, Bobby is first on the scene after hearing a gunshot from J.R.'s room uttering the words "Oh my God." The camera never shows what Bobby actually saw and it was thought J.R. committed suicide, although in subsequent films it was explained J.R. shot a mirror.

New Series (2012)

Bobby returns in the 2012 TNT sequel series. He has remarried again, this time to a woman named Ann, and is the owner of Southfork Ranch according to the terms of Miss Ellie's will. In the new series' pilot, aired June 13, 2012, Bobby has retired from the oil business, believing that alternative energy is "the future," a belief he shares with his now grown son Christopher, and is content to raise cattle on the ranch. He has decided to sell Southfork, due to his contracting stomach cancer and resulting fears that he will not be around to keep the ranch safe, and that Christopher is not yet ready to take over from him. This once again brings him into a conflict with his older brother J.R. and the latter's son, John Ross (who has discovered oil on the ranch), which will play out in the new series.

Starting Monday September 10, 2012 General Hospital moves to 2pm Eastern Time on ABC. I want to encourage everyone to tune in! It has been soooo good! My wife and I are hooked lately. Jax's brother Jerry Jax, has poisoned the water in Port Charles and they are working to find a cure or all of Port Charles could die. It reminds me of all those stories in the 80s/90s when Luke & Laura were stopping people from taking over the world. Also, Duke Lavery was shown at the end of the Monday 8/27/12 episode! Everyone is suspecting he is holding Robin. Duke Lavery was trending worldwide on twitter after that scene aired. They interviewed GH exec producer and he said he would air again in about 4-5 weeks. I encourage everyone to watch! It looks so action packed. If you can't watch Live then set your DVR or TiVo.

Here's the promo.... Watch the promo everybody! lol It was featured on Entertainment Tonight.

As a kid, Dark Shadows was a favorite soap opera. Saw the movie, it was OK, better than I thought it would be. I like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's pair up. However, that pair up is getting a little old...I think that although they work together well on films, maybe they should not do it so much. I like the campy, quirky work, though.
