Things sure were a shaking here in OKC for a few minutes this morning. Anybody else feel it?
There apparently was a small earthquake here in NW Arkansas just yesterday. It was reported in the news last night. Several people felt it in Benton County. There have been several small earthquakes in this area in the last year. Normally unheard of. I used to live in southeast Mo and northeast Arkansas, and they were not common, but occurred from time to time in the 80s and 90s. Right on the New Madrid fault line. If that fault ever has a big shift, and apparently one big un is long overdue...it will flatten St. Louis to Memphis in seconds. It will make Hurricane Katrina look like a gentle spring rain. No joke. So hang on tight in Oklahoma!
Apparently the epicenter was just a few miles to the east of Norman near lake Thunderbird. The OU campus was shaken pretty hard, but I didn't really notice since I was on the first floor of a massive concrete building that doubles as a science/math center and campus bomb shelter. A couple of the buildings had broken glass and bricks though. Fun way to start off Wednesday.
wow! glad no serious damage
oh boy.......a biggun huh? there is also a reported volcano in missouri.....how fun is that???
I was sleeping in bed in my parents house in Sikeston, MO in 1990 and got woke up by a shaking sensation, we were having a good earthquake...I lept from bed, looked out the window, and the asphalt street in front of the house looked like an old rag rug someone had grabbed by an end and was shaking it out...that asphalt just had wave after wave of "shock" running through it. Sounded like someone was driving a big ole heavy concrete or dump truck down the road with the metal bed coming loose and it making several loud pops and bangs. It was around 3.5 to 4.0 on the Richter Scale, relatively pretty mild, but it was more than enough for me. I remember that during that same period...roughly around 1984 or 1985, I was driving along I-55 in Southeast Missouri between Cape Girardeau and Sikeston and an earthquake hit...it felt like I suddenly had a tire go out and the car just jumped and swayed for a few seconds, pretty weird, but nothing too serious. As a news reporter, I spoke on the phone in 1989 and again in 1990 to Dr. Iben Browning of California, a scientist who claimed that a big earthquake on the New Madrid Fault was likely to occur in a specific time period in 1990. The prediction rattled the news media in the region, and Browning was misquoted and virtually became a recluse after being bombarded by media calls when the date approached and passed with nothing happening. He was an interesting character. But, as mentioned in my previous posting on this thread, when the big one hits, it will flatten towns and cities in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky and Illinois within seconds, cause massive flooding and building collapses, and will be felt from the Rocky Mts. to Boston and New York. Do a Google search about the earthquakes of 1811-1812 on the New Madrid Fault, you will be amazed.
^^^^ Shave the Whales,
I had no idea you were here in Oklahoma. I work at an unnamed computer company at the corner of I-44 and I-40. The whole building shook. I thought they dropped something on the roof or somebody drove into the side of the building. I was a little "shaken" sorry, I couldn't resist,
I have found between all of the posts that most of us are from around the area. save a few in illinoise which is just a giant leap away. We are like one big family. I just hope the big predicted earthquake happens AFTER the good Lord does his swoop and takes me to heaven. I would be devestated to see it.
AMEN! :) But the increase in earthquakes in the last few years make me wonder if the big one on the New Madrid fault is not close at hand...but only the Lord knows, and he won't say anything until it happens.
LIke Iben Browning, who is credited by some for predicting high stress periods that coincided with the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, I was teaching about earthquakes, and took a planner, and picked a date within the following year....announced the date, talked it up, as a sort of joke, and low and behold a 6.Something on the scale hit S. America that day. The kids had me pick another...I chose , at random, April 18, 2008...I publicized it again, as a joke, and coincidence....We awoke that morning to the house shaking, and when it stopped...the wife said "Are you *&^^%$#%$ kidding me?" She couldn't believe I did it again...in MO. Needless to say the 5.2 in Missouri was a buzz everywhere, and I was asked for months when the NEXT would be...I am not saying the NEXT date chosen at random, but watch out! It is coming! As if you already couldn't figure that out by the New Madrid Fault history...
There have been several earthquakes in central AR this week including a 4.4 one this morning near Guy (just north of Conway).
I live in Springfield, and I've never once felt any type of quake (so far).
Lots of small quakes is a good thing: it relieves stress to avoid the really big quake.
Lot of seismic activity. Anybody else seen the movie 2012? Guess SDC would be the place to be if the big one hit. I'd be having a good time as it took me out.
Didnt feel anything while we was at SDC Thurs. & Fri.

Hey I was there too! :D
Likewise, however, I keep hearing news reports of nearby earthquakes, but I have to noticeably feel one. Perhaps that's a good thing? :P
hay Junior, did you know that when the built the power plant at Sikeston, they were so smart that they put the main generator on top of a sand blow. Sucker will sink faster than a get out.
Does not surprise me about the Sikeston power plant. My family lived within a few blocks of the plant back around 1983-84. That big ole tower with the flashing light lit the entire neighborhood at night! I had a science instructor at SEMO University that told me when that big quake hit in 1811-1812, motion forced groundwater out and up, and people riding horses were suddenly barely above water. Since we've depleted the groundwater due to ag irrigation and people consumption, we might be ankle deep in water when it happens again!
JUNIOR!!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING DOWN THERE?
QuoteLITTLE ROCK -- The U.S.Geological Survey confirms a 3.8 magnitude earthquake hit Greenbrier this morning at 4:50 a.m., according to KTHV television station.
Several small earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 1.8 to 3.5 have rattled Greenbrier and nearby Guy this week. The U.S. Geological Service has reported 29 in the area since Sunday, and 700 quakes have hit the region in the past six months.
The cause remains somewhat of a mystery. However, some experts say it's likely either a naturally occurring swarm or related to ongoing natural gas exploration in the area.
Reviving this thread for the earthquake I just felt in Norman - or at least I hope that was an earthquake and not just my building almost falling over. I've been up late tonight playing video games, and my entire apartment building just shook side to size.
I really felt it this time - during last year's big earthquake I was in a giant concrete building so I didn't know what all the fuss was about. Pretty scary when you're in a much crappier apartment building and the whole thing is moving and creaking. Probably wasn't a big one though, maybe up to a 4.4, but that's just a wild guess on my part not having experienced one like this before.
Wow shave!! :o :o
HANG ON!!!!!!!!!!!!
found this from the weather channel:
Three earthquakes shook in Oklahoma this morning, the strongest was a 4.7 near Oklahoma City. No reported damage so far. This is the 2nd largest earthquake in OK history. Read more here:

I dont think I have ever experianced an earthquake before. Hope eveyone is okay!
I leave town, get married, and all Heck breaks loose. LOL ;D
This may be hard to believe, but there have been many little to moderate earthquakes in Arkansas over the last year...scientists think they have been caused by the drilling for shale rock oil. I never heard of the work of men causing earthquakes, but who knows? Seems like our old planet is getting more frail everyday, and we are not doing what we should to conserve, protect and preserve things.
congrats on the wedding okiebluegrass........u cant see it but im throwing illegal rice for your wedding!!
NO rice. think green,,,,,,,,,,,, sunflower seeds. ;D
I felt nothing in Jefferson City MO! It was a top story though.

I saw a pretty good show on History Channel on New Madrid. Said the 1812 quake made the Mississippi run backwards. And what you said in other post about St Louis and Memphis is right on the money.
I was watching tv tonight around 11 o'clock and the sofa I was sitting on shook for a couple of seconds. I knew there was something going on but had never before knowingly felt an earthquake. I went to the computer and tried to find some information and breaking news said central Oklahoma had just had a 5.2 earthquake. They were saying it was the 2nd largest earthquake recorded in Oklahoma history just behind a 5.5. I must say that experience was pretty weird. I can just imagine being in a much larger one. I live in Aurora, Mo.
5.6 earthquake centered near OK City! Felt it strongly at Pea Ridge, AR. Rattled the window blinds, gently rocked me in my chair at my computer. I've been through many small earthquakes in SE Missouri and east Arkansas, (New Madrid Faultline) but not like this one! Occurred about 10:53pm (Saturday) and shook things up for ten to fifteen seconds. The family here at the house were having small freak out attacks! Everybody OK, no damage.
Ok I felt that I thought it was me. Here on Indian Point
Ya! Now they are saying 5.6. I am pretty sure that would be the largest in Oklahoma history.
That one actually freaked me out a little, I'll admit. I felt the one last night, but I almost didn't realize it was an earthquake until it was over. This time it was long and heavy - I actually ran outside with the rest of the apartment community because it just kept shaking and there was no telling how bad it would get.
I'm always amazed at how far these things are felt too. Not only did the entire state of OK feel it, but apparently people up in KS city, Dallas, and even Junior in Arkansas. That's pretty intense!
I just don't see how quakes this big can happen so frequently all of a sudden. They were never talked about when I was growing up, but now we've had at last 4 major episodes in the last 12 months, counting this event as 2. Luckily these aren't related to the New Madrid, but rather to a fissure that's been in the middle of OK for forever. It seems like the fissure is really waking up though... the hot spot in Arkansas has been a lot more active recently than I remember too. I don't think the cause of all this is necessarily fraking, but I couldn't tell you either way. Maybe if we're lucky though we can eventually push Texas off into the sea and have a cost line in OK/AR ;)
We was asleep. But alot'a my FB friends are talkin' about it, & we live in KC, Mo. Some felt it, some did not.
MMMM? wonder how far north it was felt... glad your all ok..
I felt it here in Neosho MO and didnt think much of it. We live right next to train tracks sooooo.....but I felt it. Now I know what I felt. It wasnt much. But my dad hears that another one is on its way that is bigger.....hmmmm blizzzard tornado earthquake......whats next?
oh gosh, who knows, dont ask.. ;)
Atleast 50 earthquakes occur every day in the world.
I, again felt nothing from this one. Not in JC anymore but in StL...but still nothing. Some on the news said the ydid, I am not sure...
I felt the 5.6 up here in Kansas. Well at least the southeast corner of it any way, Had reports from friends of friends on facebook that they had felt it up in Great Bend, Ks. I thought it was just the wind blowing hard until my ceiling fan started to shake smacking the pull chains against the lighting globe. Kinda Freaky. Used to the thunderstorms and tornadoes but earthquakes, come on LOL!!!!
It was felt here in Little Rock too. I was laying in bed, and my house started to shake a bit. It lasted about ten to fifteen seconds, and then was gone. It felt very similar to the earthquakes in Greenbrier Arkansas this summer. :o
rubedegans - there are over 400 earthquakes per year in AK; heard it on the Discovery Channel.
That's a huge amount! My Bro in law lives in Florissant MO (about 25 min from us) closer to St. Louis, and felt the bigger one yesterday, but nothing here.
For those interested, here is an up-to-date, and clickable map of all of the world's earthquakes within the last two weeks, shown by bright circles. The larger the circle, the greater the intensity.

Interesting map...thanks!
Thanks for the map..kinda interesting.
Another earthquake was felt last night. This one was 4.7.
6.9 in Japan, multiple 4 & 5+ in OK and AR, Asteroid hurdling past earth... Might wanna rethink my day....
Not to mention the tornadic storms charging through Oklahoma, and Arkansas this afternoon in November. The sky is falling! The sky is falling! ;D
ok! with this topics and the things being posted............
Which movie are you thinking about today?
Armageddon?
Deep Impact?
Day after Tomorrow?
2012?
wellll??????????????/
head for the hills!!!! lol. I asked my husband in the event of earthquake where to go.....he said a field. I then went jr high on him and asked if there was an earthquake with a side of tornado what to do.....he said shake hands with God.
i told ya not to ask....
my wife works in a cave, i couldnt handle it if i worked there! :o
LOL...I live about 25-30 miles north of Prague where it all started and we felt it pretty good! With the earthquakes and the tornadoes that day, I didn't know whether to get in the cellar, get in a doorway or run outside! Wild times we're a livin' in!!
those dern baldknobbers going to be the death of us!
AND now we have high winds, flood and snow in alaska, causing some towns to evacuate,,,
What will thurday bring?
I can't believe I didn't feel any of the earthquakes/tremors. My mom felt them up in Columbia, and my sister felt them in Independence (MO), and several of my friends felt them here in Springfield... I didn't feel a thing. I always thought after living through the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake in California, I would be extra-sensitive to the earth shakin' and rollin', but I guess not.
That was the one and only major earthquake I've ever experienced. I was four and we were living in Milpitas, which is about halfway between the epicenter and Oakland. That one was a 6.9 (surface-wave 7.1). I'll never forget that day. I've never experienced anything like that before or since.
That's incredible Joy. Earthquakes definitely have a way of "rocking your world," and living throuh a big one is such an experience!
It makes sense to me that there are always earthquakes along the west coast, and such, but these new earthquakes in Oklahoma, and Arkansas this year have really puzzled me. I always thought any earthquake in this area would come from the New Madrid Fault, but it has been as quiet as a mouse.
Be GLAD the New Madrid Fault is quiet. When it gives us "the big one" it WILL destroy EVERYTHING between St. Louis and Memphis. It will make Hurricane Katrina and the Joplin Tornado seem like nothing. The 1811 1812 quakes created Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee, made the Mississippi River run backwards, and caused church bells in Boston to ring! Oh, there is a fault in the NYC area, too, that when it really shakes, will damage the east coast beyond belief. HANG ON TIGHT! IT'S GONNA BE A BUMPY RIDE!
I can only hope when that day comes my family and I will be with the Good Lord in Heaven! I dont want to see it or what it will do!!!!
we had one here about 5 years ago just out side of st.Louis about 4am i thought it was the new madrid fault line and told the wife too hang on cause if it was the new madrid fault we were in trouble, but it wasn't it was one that was located about 90 miles east of here in i think marshall IL, please correct me if I'm wrong if anyone remembers it.
