There has been a little discussion on this topic but what do you think?
I found walking through SDC to the Ghost Busters theme and 99 luftbaloons just too far out there.
Is SDC trying too hard to cater to a different crowd? McDonald's tried pizza some years back to expand there business scope, but it flopped, they aren't a pizza place, they sell hamburgers. In the same train of though SDC isn't Six Flags or World of Fun, they are both fine places to visit but these customers are walking into SDC for a reason.
I'm more of a traditionalist myself...very old school...I say keep it within the theme. HOWEVER, once they started putting in the rollercoasters, it became obvious to stay viable in business they are aiming for the young crowd with MM. I understand why they play modern music rather than the traditional bluegrass or folk stuff, I'm just not too crazy about it. If they would have had MM when I worked there, the top hits of the day would have been Queen, Joan Jett, GoGos, Journey, Kansas, Styx, Steve Miller, Bob Segar, Billy Idol, Blondie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Nena, Poison, Ratt, Damn Yankees, Van Halen, and so on. It would have been cool to me at that age to hear that stuff back then with a MM. However, the older crowd would have flipped out. I am now in the "older crowd" category, and I am sure that is why I feel the way I do about this subject.
QuoteIt would have been cool to me at that age to hear that stuff back then
I agree, but do the kids complain about the music at SDC during the day?
I think its too far or a departure.
Apparently I am old as well.
I do believe they are trying to cater to the "younger crowd" during Moonlight Madness, but why? I am 25 years old, and I still consider myself a part of the younger generation. However, when I go to Silver Dollar City I want to listen to bluegrass. If I want to listen to modern music then I will go to a modern style theme park, or I will do like everyone else, and just break out my iPod.
I am probably in the minority here, but I wish the folks in management would stop trying to force Silver Dollar City into a Celebration City style theme park. Celebration City didn't work for a reason. I think Silver Dollar City is trying too hard to be "the cool park." I am a young guy, and I thought Silver Dollar City was already a cool park just from the 1880's style experience. :-\
I like the comparison someone made in another about playing "It's a small world" in the haunted mansion at Disney World. It just doesn't work and it cheapens the experience.
It was OK to listen to some of the fun older songs in line for PK, but elsewhere in the park I think it just lowers the experience altogether. I think "kids", if they even notice, won't think it's better, but will in fact feel like they're at Six Flags. People don't pay $50 to get in for a cheap experience.
^What if they played "Imaaaaaaaginaaaaation" (from Journey into YOUR Imagination with Figment from Epcot) in the Haunted House, would it work then? lol
As I've said elsewhere, if they're gonna play modern music, why not modern country? When we weren't being subjected to Lady Gaga at Powderkeg, they were playing some current country songs and people in line were actually singing along with it.
I wouldn't mind it if they were playing artists like Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, etc. But that's as far as I'll go in not complaining about modern music at SDC. Lady Gaga just DOES NOT BELONG.

That would be a very interesting experience.
I agree with the majority. SDC needs to be bluegrass and/or country. What about the classic country? Seems like the legends have been shelved. I am a hard rock person myself. My favs are Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Kiss, Triumph and others, but I would love to hear some Johnny Cash, Dolly, Merle Haggard, etc.
Some places have to stay true to themselves! And SDC is one of them!
QuoteSome places have to stay true to themselves! And SDC is one of them!
Simply put and too the point.
Well said
I don't think it would matter to me, but it matters to a lot of people. So, here's what it boils down to: sticking with bluegrass doesn't offend anyone or cause them to complain, nor does it drive anyone away. Modern (especially pop) music does, while apparently not attracting anyone who wouldn't already be there.
So, from a business viewpoint, unless they have survey data that says something else, it just makes sense to stick with bluegrass.

....How can you argue with this ?........
Thank you, mh and "Here! Here!" to KB!
I'm getting geared up to go to the City this Sunday. Thankfully, I've got dinner plans outside of SDC and won't have to be subjected to the cheapening of the City during MM. I'm also more into the slow pace and could care less about sweating in a queue line listening to ill-behaved kids have their last hurrah before school.
It's one thing to keep the City open later and expect to have a completely different cadre of people enjoy the city who probably don't even notice the modern music. But you'd never hear this break in theme at a Disney park....ever! Once you lose your brand, you have nothing else to offer.
As I recall, most everyone on here gets a survey....right? I say let your voice be heard there. Don't be shy! Feedback is very important and I think that it's important to hold the "brand" torch high for those that can't see the forest for the trees. Unfortunately sometimes those people are even the ones who make the executive decisions.
If there going to play Country why not Dolly! She's my all time favorite, and she would fit in better at SDC than Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga creeps me out!!
I may be older, but I have two young children! I am raising the next generation, and I am teaching still others (many each year) to filter information, to discern things that fit and do not fit, to stick to a theme in their reading and writing, to understand right from wrong. As I say, I may be getting older, but my influence in the modern world is significant. Amen to all who have posted here, and might I add, if the Star Trek Experience can make its way to Dollywood, and if Sponge Bob can become a feature at SDC, I fear TPTB are not listening as closely as we would like. While I do my part to plug SDC during other times, I will not promote or support SDC during these weird times of disco and gaga.
Yep, the summer heat and kids make people do crazy things.
(no offense to kids per-se...just Kids Fest)
Like I siad they should play Dolly Parton!
The biggest thing for me as a kid in the early 89's was to be deputized by the sheriff, I didn't go there to meet Inspector Gadget, or He Man I went there for the 1880's experience. I guess they feel they will lose business to Looney Tunes, and Disney if they don't have their own Costumed characters.
Is the music really..truly...harming the park? It's played how long each night and over how many nights? I seriously doubt they have any plans on making this a permanent thing. Moving right along now.....
^DECLINE BY DEGREES.
That's all it is.
and FTR it is played all day in the PowderKeg station

Yep. If the targeted demographic doesn't care if you do it or not, and the other half of the patrons don't like it, you certainly could be harming the park. To quote a contemporary Christian song...."It's a sloooow fade". Thank you, Thank you very much.
"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Seriously though it does take away from the very thing that brings people to the park. I love the idea behind MM, but don't care for the "relaxed" theming. It just doesn't feel right. It's seems sort of like turning on the lights in Fire in the Hole. Those dips might seem comically small, and the next thing you know ....well it's hard to get the magic back. The younger crowd isn't going to SDC at MM to score a Lady Gaga speaker rock concert. They are going because it is a different experience to attend the park at night.
There were a lot of social events in 1880's that went on after dark. It wouldn't be too hard to incorporate any of this into MM.
Speaking of Theme; Sponge Bob has about as much business hanging around SDC as the boat parked at the front gate during one of our visits.
Yeah, I'm getting more and more displeased with the treatment of music at Powderkeg.
Unfortunately, some of us don't always get the surveys. I've not received one for several, several months. I'm working on writing a letter to send through their feedback form. I've always received personally-typed replies when I've sent through that before.
I'm gonna be at SDC all day Sunday. Anyone else who's gonna be there should look for me!
Silver Dollar City breaking theme on music? No way, impossible. Everyone knows that in the 1880's, "It's Raining Men" was played at all the local Saloon Bars, and Lady Gaga was played at all of the evening shin-digs. :)
I like 80s music, but i'd rather hear bluegrass any day or night at SDC.

As much as I hate the
It's Raining Men gag (and don't think it belongs), at least it is adapted to the musical genre of the saloon set.
I guess the real answer is in the attendance during these few times that they "break" themeing. Maybe the aim of those who are trying new things to draw a younger crowd...families with small children, etc. is to insure the ultimate survival of the park. We must ask ourselves if we are willing to accept some changes to insure that the park survives the changes we are seeing in the industry. Do we want things to stay the same and hope that there are enough of us around to keep the park going, or do we want the park to evolve and appeal to a whole new generation while trying to stay as close to its roots as possible? My young nephews only want to go to parks for the latest and the greatest rides....they enjoy Kids Fest because it involves activities they can relate to...and they enjoy (to my horror) the music they play during MM. I appreciate that all these things keep them wanting to go, because it does expose them to what the park is truly about.
I'm at the park right now, and the Saloon show was different from the show that's gone on the last few years. This was my first time seeing it this year.
Fabian & ...can't remember her name, are now already a part of the Saloon instead of just coming in. The songs were all different and all musicals-originated. There was no Raining Men.
As much as I laugh at the gag of Miss Tilly in a Viking helmet, I didn't miss nor not miss the number.
The show seemed a tad shorter, or that may be because it was well-paced and much tighter than it has been in previous years.
Powderkeg put me in a bad mood (I Will Survive, YMCA, etc BLARING on the station speakers during non-MM hours REALLY irks me), so between finally getting to hear the Riverblast theme (I love it!) and a great new(ish) show at the Saloon, my mood has improved.
Of course, I think the cinnamon bread from Sullivan's Mill helped, too. LOL
So far the only modern music I've heard today was at Powderkeg. FITH, Riverblast, American Plunge, etc were all playing themes interspersed with good bluegrass.
I was in line at PowderKeg very early in the season and they were playing bluegrass all the while openly making comments about burning the MP3 they WOULD be playing the rest of the year.
The management must know they are breaking the theme and for what ever reason they are allowing it.
Is this because its the " Big" roller coaster right now? the one the kids like to ride?
I will comment if given a survey this year.
Has there ever been an official explanation for the contemporary music during MM? And why are they allowing contemporary music to be played during regular hours at PK?
I live 1 hr from SixFlags (STL) and 5 hours from SDC. I would give just about anything for it to be the other way around, and so would my kids (ages 3-14) for that matter! Six Flags (STL) has more rides but the atmosphere is blech. What makes SDC special IMHO is its spirit and that spirit is altered when The Village People and Lady GaGa are coming through the loudspeakers!
Please tell them right now!!!!!

Oh, the minute I got close enough in the queue to the PK station to hear YMCA blaring on the speakers, I already knew I was going to be writing a very long letter.
Now, speaking at the end of the day in the comfort of my home, I have even more to add to my complaint letter.

1960's kids went to SDC and came back as adults because of the theme. So did 70's, 80's and 90's. In fact the park has grown tremendously. I would suspect that a "if it ain't broke don't fix it", plan should be implemented, as I don't think that today's youth is much different. The theme IS the park. Lady Gags IS not.

Ha! Precisely! Love it!
Despite not being able to avoid her (not at all attractive) face because she's all over the news, I wouldn't recognize a Lady Gaga song if it bit me.
But if it did bite me, I'd head straight to the E.R., because you know that thing's gotta be nasty.
Sent my email. Totally agree with tradition. When I walk past the gates and here the bluegrass, it's like I take a deep breath and think " yeah, that's what I'm talking about"
very relaxing. Other music does not belong and does not fit.
In my humble but very outspoken opinion.

Received this reply on the MM music. Hey at least they are prompt, received just a few hours after my "complaint".

Thank you for your email . We are sorry to hear you were disappointed in the music played during our 3nd Annual Moonlight Madness special event. To clarify, Moonlight Madness was created in 2007 especially for families who wanted to experience our rides after dark. It is promoted as "Summer's Last Blast" with an opportunity to "scream under the stars" and enjoy select shops and restaurants. Thus the reason for the "younger music".
We are disappointed to hear that you were unaware of the theme to this special event and were expecting the park to be as it is during other festivals and in full operation. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know and will strive to do a better job of promoting these special events more clearly.
Sincerely,

Seriously?! We DO know the theme of the event and it does not at all mean they need "younger music."
What a bunch of bull.
Yeah, kind of my impression too. Corporate baloney. But again they did respond...maybe enough feedback will get the suits attention.

Well, here's my two cents: SDC is an 1880's THEME park, with the THEME being 1880's pioneering and crafts. Nothing fits that THEME more than good ol' bluegrass music and there's no shortage of good bluegrass to choose from. If the suits want to try something new, I guess it's better to try new things at an after hours special event than during regular business hours. If I drove all the way there, paid admission, then heard the "Black Eyed Peas" softly blaring in the woods, I'd have to head straight for the corporate offices. SDC is what it is because it has remained true to it's roots for so long. In my Grandpas words: "Dance with the one that brung ya".
Part of the problem is that this "younger music" was NOT only playing during Moonlight Madness the last time I was there. The Powderkeg crew had their MM CD blaring at 11 in the morning!

In Other words................. Too bad so sad! that's the way we are gonna do it, we don't give a damn what you have to say about it.
Or it would have read something like
" we appreciate and welcome all questions and comments from out valued customers, rest assured we take all comments into consideration when making decisions in our parks"
But that's not what they said.
They said,........ Like it or Lump it.
Interestingly when I was early at 6PM for MM I was welcomed with the Ghost Busters Theme.
They are not keeping it to the hours of the event.
This also contains no information about Powder Kegs lack of theme music.
Wow, this troubles me deeply! How could they be so careless about the thoughts, and concerns of the people who spend their own hard earned money on them?
I think this should be taken to the next level. I am going to write a strongly worded physical letter to their offices in Branson, and to their corporate office.
No one ever expected Silver Dollar City to bend over backwards for everyone's individual taste, however, to basically tell their customers that it's the customer's own fault for not liking something that they force upon us really grinds my gears! >:(
Wow! Did they really put the "we're sorry you didn't get the memo" statement in there? Sigh...
It's official, I will avoid any "special" events the City has. I tell people all the time in Florida how amazing SDC themeing is, but if anyone actually took my advice and decided to come during this marketing ploy, I'd be embarrassed.
I do love Bluegrass but if we are going to be correct and play 1880's music there would be no Bluegrass. It came to being in the early 1940's.. SDC would have to play hill folk music.

Good ole' Bill Monroe the father of Bluegrass music. You are correct, but blue grass is a variation at least of 1880's hill folk music. "Poker Face".... not so much. I do remember as a kid hearing more dulcimer/fiddle music around the park and boy hill folk music would be fine by me.
As a kid I remember that was one of those unforgettable sights and sounds that greeted you when you went to the park. As an adult it was like coming home to hear the sound of the dulcimer cascading over the hills, and more often than not it was live, not a rock. My dad is gone now, but when I enter those gates I think of him. Lets face it; SDC is a niche park. It doesn't have the location to be like the cookie cutter parks. It's success is because it is VERY different from other parks. It is a unique experience that is handed down from generation to generation, and that is the reason for it's long term success. Had it tried to be Six Flags in it's infancy urban explorers would be tresspassing to see it's remains.
That being said, I think people are more worried about the gradual loss of theme than the few nights a year they try to inject the Celebration City (night park) into the mix. I don't think it is just the music at night, as much as the combination of the music; basketballs; glow sticks; modern coke machines; Spongebob; Scooby Doo; and speed boats parked by the main entrance. The semi snarky letter just reinforces the perception that the young Six Flags execs that are taking over the day to day just don't get it. Even though that may not truly be the case.
I miss all the dulcimer & fiddle music... It's my personal opinion that the dulcimer is the single-most awesome instrument ever invented.

You hit the nail right on the head! I think some of us could forgive the transgressions of Moonlight Madness as long as we had the confidence to know that this is not the start of wayward trend. All it takes is to remove a few cards before the entire house of cards comes crumbling down.
Silver Dollar City has been around in its current form for 50 years! Have they forgotten the "old" adage of "if it isn't broke don’t fix it?"
It will be a sad day when I have to bring my MP3 player to Silver Dollar City just to listen to bluegrass! ;)
The 50th anniversary and all the great "Did you know" signs and the fact that this is the year we are supposed to remember the past, is NOT a good time to inject a Spencers Gifts attitude into this grand old lady.
I'm late getting in on this, but reading that letter really really upset me. I'm agreeing with the rest of you guys on this. Sure it was a prompt reply, but it was a bull reply. First rule of business is to never ever insult the customer that pays their hard earned money to enjoy your park.
As a teenager, I can honestly say that we do NOT need modern music to have a good time. Give us some credit SDC!! We're able to adapt and I know most kids my age would have a great time if SDC would ever decide to do a large square dance or something like that instead of the street dance with the modern music.
It's insulting that they are so lazy when it comes to thinking up creative new ideas for their guests to experience. Just because MM is targeted for the young families doesn't mean you have to break the theme you've had for 50 years that's gotten you to where you are in the business. I'm getting off the soap box now because everything I just said has already been said one way or another but I just wanted to offer my opinion.
Thanks for your input Coaster. I'm glad to hear that we "older" types aren't completely off target.
^Thanks Betamake. I've been to both Disneyland and Disneyworld and you're completely correct. They don't have any slip ups in the theme whatsoever. I LOVE Silver Dollar City, but they just need to try harder.
Or at least step up their Guest Relations department...sheesh!
There has been a lot of comments concerning the letter they sent and the tone that it took.
I wonder if the suits are reading these posts and if they realize they really blew that one....
Six years later:
Rocky Horror - Time Warp????
They couldn't slip much further than that.
The whole Moonlight Madness thing with the night rides, random music choices, and fireworks is obviously done to fill the void for their night time park they left to rot. (Celebration City)
While I do love and appreciate the traditional feel of SDC with the old folk music and bluegrass I do find for this event that the rules can be bent since the older crowds will likely be gone for the day already. But I do think they should still limit their choices. Modern and classic country music is fine and I even think music from the 50's-60's (ala Celebration City) and a select few from the 70's and 80's is acceptable. Just no screamo music, pop, or gangster rap.
Still, to play anything Rocky Horror not only breaks the 1800s theme, but the Christian theme, as well. I am certain SDC does not endorse the Rocky Horror lifestyle; any inference that might be made to the contrary undermines the Message they try to otherwise portray.
So I thought about going over this past weekend but got busy and did not make it, so thought I may try for next weekend. How do the crowds go during this MM event? For example, what days are busy, what times of day are busy? If I do my normal show up at opening and stay till about 3pm will that be before the really big crowds get there for MM? I usually try to avoid the park on really busy days.
After "accidentally" going last year during the MM event, we now purposefully avoid that festival. Last year, we thought it would be fun to stay until midnight since we were there. The street dance with the 80's (1980's) cover band was depressing.
Pudgy, was the band depressing or the music...or both? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just curious. I was at MM several years ago on a nice night and enjoyed it, but I also didn't stay more than a couple hours.
I have never been to this event but I think next year I might plan on attending. Look for a older dude doing the time warp :o. Ive thrown many hotdogs at the screen in my day.
We are going this weekend.
Anyone gone thru the week? I might go tomorrow assuming the crowds will be lighter.

It was depressing to me because it is not the SDC I expect. The music and band were fine if you are into that sort of thing. But when I walk through the grapevines into the Hospitality House, I'm used to hearing the sweet strains of bluegrass calling me back for another visit. I understand! That's what I thought you meant. It ruins the whole atmosphere. I was okay with the music during the street dance, which looked like fun, with the citizens dancing with guests, but I don't want to hear it in any building or around rides or attractions and especially upon entering or leaving the grounds.
On Saturday starting around 5ish, I heard stupid country crap around the park loudly, which makes me even more pissed because I have to turn mine up even louder. Nobody wants to hear that. I came to hear good music since it is MM. PK, FITH, AND TGS all played it. Of all rides, WF didnt play it. Thank god because they always did before. I told customer service about this and they need to play good music. They said they never knew they were playing it. Im just happy EH and the Street Dance played good music. When it's not Moonlight Madness how do you even step into the park with all of that terrible Bluegrass music playing?? Or do you consider the Bluegrass different from the country music.
Laroy, Laroy, Laroy. When you go into Silver Dollar City, you are stepping back into 1880's Ozarks. Because of the theme of the park, it would be expected there would be music playing throughout the park that would add to the ambiance OF that theme. Not detract from it. That "country crap," as you call it, has been a part of Silver Dollar City from the beginning. If you have been to the City more than a couple of times, you already know this. Why would you call and complain to customer service about it when it's been there from the very start of the park? You'll say it was because of the Moonlight Madness. I call bull. Maybe they had a dance on the square and played music during that dance that wasn't part of the normal theme. Big deal. That does not mean they should completely abandon the theme of the park during Moonlight Madness. If you hate the music played around the City so much, I would suggest you stop going. That way your ears don't have to be so offended by the music.

Umm, you do realize that you are in the Ozarks, and that's the most popular kind of music around here. That bluegrass, which they usually play, is a variation of country? That the two are the foundations of the music in the park?
If you don't like country music, the SDC and Branson aren't the places for you to hang around if you don't want to complain about the music.

On Saturday starting around 5ish, I heard stupid country crap around the park loudly,
Umm, you do realize that you are in the Ozarks, and that's the most popular kind of music around here. That bluegrass, which they usually play, is a variation of country? That the two are the foundations of the music in the park?
If you don't like country music, the SDC and Branson aren't the places for you to hang around if you don't want to complain about the music.
YUP!
Not everything in branson plays country or is centered around it.

You should EXPECT it at an 1880's theme park.

Are you talking about Branson Or SDC? I am not a fan of country music or bluegrass by any means but when I go to SDC I would be totally dissapointed if it was not playing as background in the park. Without it the theme would be all messed up. As for the street dance and moonlight madness that is a different story. While the music does not belong I understand the thinking.

Bingo. I'm not a fan of country music at all either, but it fits the theme of SDC. It would be disappointing if they dropped it completely. A lot of the music they play during MMI'm not a fan of either, but you don't see me criticizing it the way some people around here are...
We went Saturday, got there about 10 and left by 4. It was pretty busy but not nearly as busy as I figured it would be. There was not a single room available in Branson yesterday so we did not stay, just drove up and back. If we were staying we may have gone back for the moonlight deal.
Quite a discussion on Branson Tour Guide's Facebook page about Moonlight Madness! Worth reading and commenting on if you have time or access to FB.

Then maybe you would be better to skip SDC if you hate the music so much. Maybe a Branson show would be more in line for you.
I am just thankful they are not playing Lady Gaga, or similar pop music like they did a few years ago! :P
I love bluegrass music, and there are few things sweeter than strolling through the hills of Silver Dollar City with the ambiance of the banjo, fiddle, and mandolin tickling the ears. When I was there this previous weekend, I did notice the shift at about 5:00 PM, or so from traditional bluegrass to the more modern country when Moonlight Madness started.
I've said for many years now that if SDC wants to play modern music for Moonlight Madness, they should play bluegrass covers of those songs, like those from The Cleverlys and the Beef Seeds and the Pickin' On series.
I actually have an entire playlist on YouTube of covers like that as an example of what SDC could be playing.

^It's a simple fix that would satisfy me. They probably couldn't find a local group who does those live and cheaply though.
