Dollywood May Receive B&M Wing-Walker
June 7th, 2011
It appears Silver Dollar City's sister park Dollywood is constructing a brand new B&M "Wing Walker" style roller coaster on a hill near the center of the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee theme park.
Wing Walkers are a new variant of steel coaster rides, where riders ride in seats suspended over the sides of the rails, with two seats on each side. Raptor at Gardaland in Italy is currently the only such ride in existence, at least by this same manufacturer. A video of this ride can be seen Here.
Fans were alerted to the news of royal blue B&M track headed to the park last night by a source on Tumblr who happened to stop at the same truck stop as one of the semi's transporting the ride. The driver confirmed he was headed to Dollywood. Sure enough, today users on Thrillnetwork reported seeing the track being stored not far from view at the park today. Photos were posted Here.
Some of the photos seem to have been quickly clamped down on by the park due to being snapped while on one of Dollywood's rides in strict violation of park policy. However, it's hard to believe that would be Dollywood's prime motivation for clamping down on such photos. The track can still be seen from the park even while off the rides, however, with at least one photo remaining online to prove its existence.
Construction of the ride began several months ago with extensive excavation and tree clearing of the site. Fans were alerted early to the fact that DW was building a new ride by this news article, which announced that the local planning commision had approved a major new ride for the park. Since then Dollywood's spokesman Pete Owens has gone on to fan the flames of enthusiast speculation by revealing that the ride would be the first of its kind in the U.S. and be the park's, and therefore the entire chain's, single most expensive ride addition to date in an interview on Thrillnetwork.
Since spotting the royal blue B&M track and tan supports yesterday, enthusiasts seem to have agreed that the ride must be a Wing Walker due to Owens' earlier "first in the U.S." comment. The park remains tight lipped about the ride, but will make a grand announcement during Tennessee's Boomsday Event with a spectacle Owens has called "unique and outsized." Currently only a teaser banner stating "The Sky Is Not The Limit" stands outside the massive construction area within Dollywood.
SDCFans will be covering the construction of this new roller coaster and all further Dollywood related news. Look for a new wiki section about the park to open soon, and check out the dollywood area on our forums.
