Past rides at Silver Dollar City
« on: June 19, 2020, 11:02:26 AM »
Hey guys, I am currently doing a little personal project about Silver Dollar City's history. Part of it is listing/going over all the old rides and play areas at the park that no longer exist. So far I have,

- Sam's Minin Shack
- Herman The Hermit's Tree Top House
- Jim Owen's Float Trip
- Rube Dugan's Diving Bell
- Huck Finn's Hideaway
- Tom Sawyer's Landing
- Lost River of the Ozarks
- Waterworks/Wilderness Waterboggan
- Runaway Ore Cart
- Geyser Gulch
- Splash Harbor
- Buzz Saw Falls

Is there any that you guys remember but don't see here?

I’d suggest starting on the park’s Wikipedia page to see the ones you’ve missed and go from there

Yeah, that's where i got the rides i listed from haha. I just didn't know if there were any more that weren't put on the wikipedia page. Figured this is the place to ask if there were missing rides on that page.

"Gandy Dancer" I believe is what it was called. A self powered ore cart ride for the kids. The carts still exist around the park as theming props.

EDIT Found it: http://www.sdcfans.com/forums/index.php?topic=110.0

We have some old info on some of our legacy pages here:
http://sdcfans.com/sdc-wiki/sdc-history/attractions-removed-from-sdc/

Not sure what happened to the photos. I haven't been maintaining that part of the site in a few years.

If you look at a map of the city before the train was installed, there was a nature trail that went down to Lake Silver. and along the trail was a building listed as a haunted house. I asked Jack and he said it was only there for one season, but ended up on the wrong side of the track opposite where the saloon is now. It sat there for years as the Butterfield Hotel (Closed sign nailed over the door) and was a hangout for the early Saloonies. It was removed when Deepwoods was developed. I have no other info and have no idea what the haunted house contained.

I have vague memories of a kiddie attraction on Lake Silver, roughly around 1986.  I believe there were three small structures built over the lake, similar in nature to Tom Sawyer's landing.  You could access one of the structures by climbing up a rope bridge from land.  I *think* it was next to the Gandy Dancer along the waterfront between the Lost River entrance and the current toy shop (which in my earliest memory was a basket shop).  Can anyone confirm or shed light on this?

EDIT: I found this (https://sdcfans.com/tag/throwback-thursday/) great description of what was apparently called Shanty Town.  I remember it fondly, along with the original iteration of Geyser Gulch.

^^That's very interesting, I had never heard of a haunted house at SDC mentioned before.

^Yup! That was just before my time, but my brother (six years old) mentioned it I believe. SDC has had so many iterations of play areas. Shanty town was the first big dedicated area for one that I know of, followed by Tom Sawyer's Landing, then Geyser Gulch, and now we have Fireman's Landing and half dollar holler. They used to have a little kid sized door leading into the toy shop from this area too, lol. Back in the days when people weren't quite as afraid of losing track of their kids at SDC.

^^^Ditto Steve's response, Old Guy.  That's before my time.

^^Next to the Gandy Dancer was the Ferris Wheel, Kid coaster, and the Merry-Go-Round.  That's separate from Shanty Town.  It was on the corkscrew side of Tom Sawyer's Landing.
