BBQ best bang for the buck
« on: May 11, 2019, 12:10:06 PM »
In all the years I have been going to SDC during the Blue Grass/BBQ festival we have never eaten any of it.  We have strolled thru the red/gold hall and checked it out but thats about it.  Since we will be there tomorrow what/where is the best bang for the buck for food at this deal?   We usually do not eat at the city very often but end up leaving early to mid afternoon when it starts getting busy if we get there pretty close to opening.

several of the vendors in the Red Gold Hall will have different deals and some of them are folks with restaurants fairly nearby (seems like there were folks there from Aurora, MO a couple years ago for example).  Good food and not outrageously priced.  And be sure to try the mason jar desserts.  couple of different size options.

They don't have the vendors like Hogwild and Dickies anymore, and haven't for a couple of years.  Everything in Red Gold is totally in house and done by SDC.  Like JustGoHogs said it is all very good and reasonable on price.  The large mason jar desserts are a little pricey at around $10.00 but a lot to eat in those big jars  :).

The mason jar desserts are pricey, but you get to keep the jar. So its not a total bust. I split a nacho with my mom and it was 13.00 with discount. (I opted to use my 1.50 refill mug) The variety is ok. My group all got something different and were all pleased.

You have to return the jar.  There are collection sites around RGHH next to the trash cans

Then why did the lady selling the dessert give us the lids for it and tell us we could take it with us?

our BG&BBQ visits the last couple of years were later ones to see specific talent (Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder) so we didn't make it into RGHH/House of BBQ.  Full disclosure, Until last year I worked in radio and got to try virtually everything food-wise during the festival (and all the rest) and I'm diabetic, so even a small dessert is a HUGE treat for me.

I was just referring to the BBQ offerings at the festival.  I can now answer this question.  I got the sliced brisket dinner which was $14.99 and the wife got some sort of smoked sausage with cheese and other stuff on a bun.  I can't remember how much it was.  Anyway, the brisket tasted old and dry to me.  Wife said the sausage was OK but not worth the price.  So, IMO if eating BBQ at the park, forget paying $14.99 down there and spend an extra $2 and get the buffet at the mine.  I will NOT be doing any of the BBQ in the red/gold anymore.  I bet it was a lot better when they had outside folks in there selling their BBQ.

I am sure it was much fresher with the folks outisde, then it is a real contest..
Food inside? we know has been cooked previously, (not sure when), put under warmer lights or in a oven, then finally served when an order is made.  Bad idea, nothing fresh about that..

I had forgotten but I also seem to recall different vendors have different sauces, which they used to sell.  Anyway, I will eating any of the BBQ down there again and if I do it will be at the mine since it is all you can eat for just a couple bucks more.

I might get some flak for this but the BBQ was very underwhelming this year in both quality/freshness and selection. Granted I went on a slow Wednesday but still disappointing.

It's not the same quality it was a few years ago when they had outside vendors come in.  The BBQ used to be a "must stop and eat" for me, but now I usually skip it. Which is a really sad thing to say since I love BBQ.

The food that they make special for the festivals just seems to be of much lower quality overall. This has been true for World Fest/ Festival of Wonder for years as well.
This is a stick up!  Get it? Stick.... Nevermind, it's a train robbery.  I want everyone to get your hands up and act scared.

I dont think anyone here is going to argrue with you,   seems like everyone has the same "below par" thoughts and feelings about the BBQ.

Well with that being said hopefully the PTB will take note and either make some vast improvements or do something different altogether.
