General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Best Dates for Christmas Visit
« on: October 22, 2019, 10:45:10 AM »
What are the projected best dates to visit for Christmas this year in terms of lowest crowds?

I have gone on the night before Thanksgiving for years and years. It used to be pretty slow, but in the last 10 or so years the crowds have jumped up. I still always see a noticeable drop in crowds after around dinnertime on that night though.

Regardless the budget and scheduling issues that may be a factor, the reality is it's going to look very ghetto if they leave Lake Silver as is next to a brand new $25 million addition. It's a shame that something as simple as a very small body of water cannot be treated as an aesthetic asset to the park. Especially considering how little the park would need to invest to treat it as such.

Why do you think they'll leave Lake Silver the same way it is now? I totally expect that it will look different in some way when the ride opens.

Another new thought - That lift looks a lot higher than Infinity Falls at Sea World.....maybe it isn't.  But it will be interesting to see how the rafts queue up for the lift....or if it will be quick enough that they don't.  The lift really changes how to operate a raft ride.

There's others who have ridden Infinity Falls at SeaWorld that could tell you first-hand, but the POV videos on Youtube show a small wait between rafts, but nothing that appears too time consuming. So assuming it will operate the same, there may not be much of a queue needed.

Watching the initial reactions from the public roll in... Very reminiscent of the Time Traveler announcement in some ways. Lots of people freaking out about the drop, saying it makes it too scary to be a family ride. SDC stepping in and downplaying it so people aren't worried...

Well, with Time Traveler we know how that went. People got over their fears pretty darn quick and it's been incredibly popular. I predict the same will happen here. Only difference is that this is a replacement of a previous ride, so I can understand the people who are scared of heights being upset about it.

I just think it's hilarious how SDC will try to push the envelope a little, then have to down play it every time when people freak out, lol.

This ride is very similar to Infinity Falls at Seaworld Orlando, including a similar (but not quite as high) lift and drop. I haven't ridden on it, but the POV videos I've seen seem to make the drop not nearly as bad as what some naysayers think. I don't even think it will be that bad for most people who don't like heights (I don't, although I do still ride all the coasters).

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Christmas crowds
« on: November 23, 2016, 01:15:40 PM »
it's a Saturday with the Christmas stuff.  It's going to be packed.  This one might be lighter- you might get to use the parking lot instead of parking 3 miles down the road- but honestly if you're going to go on a Saturday you're going to have to deal with huge, heavy crowds and long lines.

I can not recommend strongly enough, do not go to SDC on a Nov or Dec Saturday.  Friday nights and Sunday nights are better, though still busy.  But they are manageable, especially in November.  But if there is any way at all possible, go on a Wednesday or Thursday.  You will have a much, much better day.

I basically agree with this, although I went on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago, which was (and I think still is) the coldest day we've had this Fall (high 40s and a bit windy, although it was sunny). While it was pretty crowded, ride levels were not at all bad. We didn't do any shows that time though, so it really depends on what you are planning to do.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Day before Thanksgiving crowd levels?
« on: November 23, 2016, 01:12:28 PM »
My family has gone on the day before Thanksgiving ever since I was kid.  Years ago, the park was not at all crowded. Nowadays, it's a bit more crowded, but it's anywhere near peak attendance level. I agree that the park will be much, much busier the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, and even Thanksgiving day itself.

I was informed that all targets have been reset and that there are several targets valued at 500 points now.  I do not know how many or where they are located but they are there

I will have to check next time I'm there.  I didn't notice anything last weekend, but wasn't really paying close enough attention.

I had friends there Sunday and it was working.  Lightning strikes do not necessitate taking it down.  Good grief.  Stop all this hype until we know what is going on.

Yeah, I got the picture that it was a temporary shutdown. It obviously didn't take that long to get it back up.

They shut the ride down if there is lighting within a 10 mile radius. So, it can be shut down for a long time on rainy days.

Right. But the ride was closed for the remainder of the day and the rest of the rides opened shortly after the storm moved away. The explanation was that lightning shut it down and it wasn't working.

Yeah, I know about the one last year.

I don't think this was anything close to that one, and I haven't seen any reports online, so I'm guessing it was something relatively minor.

I was there on Saturday. If there was something I can possibly report on Swoosh, let me know.

Otherwise, the theme music was working fine and for the most part targets were working fine. I only hit a couple that I didn't noticeably see not working.

Apparently last Saturday there was a lightning strike of some kind that put the American Plunge out of commission at least for the day. I was there after the big storm went through that day, and everything was open except for that. Does anyone know if the ride itself was actually hit, or did power go out to it because of a strike, or ...?

Pretty much underwhelmed as I thought I would be. We knew most of this before so I was not expecting much. I know this is replacing a kids area, but how many kids areas do they really need? If you really look at it, why would putting in used rides from a place (CC) that was a failure be considered a smart move ? hopefully better things are on the horizon.

Why can't you have more than one kids area?

Just because CC closed doesn't mean that some of the rides they had there were good. Would it be better if they bought a new shot tower, for example?

^That's doubtful.  Models cost a lot of money, and with computer engineering and graphics, models are no longer necessary to get the images to the public.  I'm not saying they never use them, but that with the cost and time involved, it doesn't happen often anymore.  I did love to look at those old models though.

I agree with what you say, although I don't know if that model was really used for anything other than showing off for the visitors of the park. It didn't seem like the type that would have been used in conjunction with actually creating the ride (but then again, I'm not familiar with really how that process worked).

I think SDC does a great job of sticking to their themes, and probably the best of any park I've been to, especially considering the amount of period theming required for a park that big.
