Branson Talk / Re: Hee Haw Theater
« on: August 30, 2017, 11:50:22 AM »
Since last posting here, several people connected to Hee Haw Theater have passed on. TV show cast members Jim and Jon Hager, Gordy Tapp, and sadly, the theater manager, Tom Lutz, who had a 15 year career in showbiz as an actor on Gunsmoke and Bonanza, a writer for comedy greats Jonathan Winters, Bob Hope, the Smothers Brothers, and a cue card guy and writer on Hee Haw, died. Tom was my boss at the theater for 3 years, and a great guy and an influence in my younger days. After the Hee Haw Theater went bust in October of 83, Tom left showbiz and partnered with some friends and had ownership in a BBQ joint in Fayetteville, AR, he later built or remodeled houses, and drilled oil wells in western Kansas. His marriage fell apart when the Branson theater failed, but he later remarried a nice gal who was at his side when he died at a hospice in Fayetteville early this spring.cannot say enough nice things about him. He started showbiz as a page at the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He always told great stories back then about his showbiz experiences, like writing with Jack Burns, a comedy legend, working on Bonanza as a supporting actor, and, funny behind the scenes stories about working on the Hee Haw set. Anyway, God rest his soul, condolences to his family and friends.

I think the Sounds of SDC  album was made in 80 or 81. I know I was there on the town square when some of it was recorded...and I know most of the people who performed on it. Fun times!

Construction/Rumors / Re: SDC's 2018 Project(s) and Park Developments
« on: August 16, 2017, 12:58:10 PM »
OK, it is an exciting project...it promises a lot. I want to see it. I want to go to the park and watch people ride it. My one concern is the $26 million price tag...more than double the price of Outlaw Run...whew, hard for an old goat like me to imagine that much money spent on one attraction. But I give the park a big thumbs up and say, Godspeed, SDC! FITH was built for about $1 million in 1973. The diving bell, state of the art for it's day, cost $1.2 million. Convert the 1977 dollars to 2017 levels, my guess that is well below $26 million.OK, I admit,  I have a smile on my face, and I am playing devil's advocate regarding the bucks. It will be a great coaster, I know! Can't wait to see the line for it opening day, lol!!!

Apparently the smoke damage was the bigget part of it. That could mean a full interior remodel.

Construction/Rumors / Re: Future SDC Development Speculation (Long-term)
« on: August 12, 2017, 04:03:30 PM »
Too bad they cannot come up with funds to build a three or four deck parking garage on the main lot...which in my daze working there it was called "C" lot. It is the area from the bus/tram loading area on the upper lot going toward the Hospitality House. If they remodel the front area at the turnstyles, I hope they keep the waterclock.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: 99 year lease
« on: August 12, 2017, 03:57:21 PM »
When the Lynch sisters passed, everything they had passed to a church in Branson and the College of the Ozarks.. I swore that the company offered to purchase the property in the 90s, but others here disagreed with me. I don't know the current status. All the power brokers in town know that SDC is a good thing, and I cannot imagine the stake holders would do anything to change what is in place. Why would anyone want to screw things up? However, in every situation there is always at least one guy who wants to throw the monkey wrench in the works. I pray when the issue comes up, cool heads will prevail, and things will continue. Since Hershend development surrounds it all, someone might have to pay the family company to access the island with the cave under it, lol!

Please see my post under the Ozarks Hills Press header in the Ozark Marketplace. I am scheduled to be at the State of the Ozarks Festival in Hollister, MO on Sept. 16th from 10am to 7pm to display a portion of my collection of historic Ozarks photos and postcards. The publisher of State of the Ozarks magazine on the Web personally asked me to appear, so it is quite an honor. Hope to see you there!
