Branson Talk / Re: Branson Food

Famous Dave's is hands down the best BBQ. Shorty Smalls wasn't as good as I remember when I lived there.

On my last visit to the Branson, I stopped in over by the old location for Sadie's Sideboard (on the Shepherd of the Hills Expressway) and to my surprise, the iconic statue of General Cornpone was hidden behind the store!!!!

I took a picture of it and some guy came out and started asking me questions about my snooping. He said his family still owns the Dogpatch property. He could have been part of the Dunn, Spradley or Maland families that shared ownership before it closed. The statue might still be sitting there.

Other Parks / Re: Dixie Stampede Orlando closing
« on: June 02, 2008, 06:39:46 PM »
I seriously doubt the HSM idea (wink). The day after it closed to the public, it was used for a convention of some type. The area is simply saturated in these dinner theater type of shows and the price point of Dixie Stampede isn't what a lot of the tourists in the area are wanting to spend their last dime on. Usually these dinner shows come at the very end of everyone's vacation since both Disney and Universal keep everyone occupied for a while.

If it wasn't for them closing earlier this year, they may have begun to think about it now with the general downturn in attendance.

Ha!!!! That is great Old Guy! You are exactly right, it wasn't the Spring House, it was indeed the Vineyard (or Smokehouse) Restaurant. I don't remember them being grapes, although I am sure they were, I just remember trying to convince my parents to get me out of there and onto the Float Trip. Thanks for the clarification.

Random Talk / Re: Ozarks Legacy & Legend IMAX film
« on: May 29, 2008, 05:20:20 PM »
Well, it has been playing there since 1995 or 1996, so hopefully it will be there for a while longer. The restaurant inside of the IMAX building is called McFarlane's which is the name of the family from the film. They apparently have a lot tied up in the lore of that movie.

Random Talk / Ozarks Legacy & Legend IMAX film

Does anyone recall the IMAX film that starred a few Silver Dollar City citizens, Jim Haygood, Dave Smith, Les Weist and Gene Boertner, to name a few? I finally got it on DVD but truly the magic of the film is lost without the IMAX screen ratio and pre-show "sound test"

Old Guy (or other members): Do you remember a show inside the Spring House Restaurant which is located next to the General Store. I recall that it some type of puppet show and could be watched as you dined inside of the Spring House.

I do believe that one of the original buildings in the complex for the Corn Crib theater still exists as a t-shirt shop of some kind.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: SDC Fantasies
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:11:14 PM »
When I used to work in the park, I fantasized about living there, which was probably a good thing since it enhanced the storyline. We (The Candy Factory kids) would run all over the park and give people directions during our lunch hour fully pretending we lived in the city. We would even attend the Sunday morning service at the Wilderness Chapel in our SDC costumes then head to work. It was great!! Everyone there took such pride in the city.

One night I stayed afterwards and took an "off the beaten path" tour of Marvel Cave with an official cave guide "cousin" which required us to literally crawl on our bellies through mud and "you know what" through some really small passages and was honestly pretty unsafe. We came out somewhere in the woods outside of the park over by where the Young Life cabins are next to the service entrance.

As a kid I remember waiting in the queue line for Rube Dugan's Diving Bell (that attraction ALWAYS scared me to death) and fondly remember seeing a periscope pop up out of the water and then back down in Lake Silver as if to indicate the Diving Bell really was making a journey out into the water...probably another reason why it scared me so much, thinking that we were going to get deep sixed and stay at the bottom of the lake!

On a "Did You Know" topic: Did you know that the early days of Huck Finn's Hideaway (Treehouse) was based around a story of a raccoon named Rocky and was loosely about him stealing candy from the candy factory (look at the city tie-in's!!). You could buy this same book "Zeke Hatfield and the Ghost Named Rocky" at the Mercantile and General Store. I had this book and recently found a copy on Amazon as well. Great book with lots of SDC art in it!

The whole journey through the treehouse made sense only if you read the book and even then, the star tunnel in the cave at the end made no sense at all.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: Great photos on Flickr

Thanks for all the compliments on the Flickr photos that I posted over at my Flickr site. I have enjoyed reading all of the lively conversation here on the forum. I grew up at SDC...literally, having worked there for a number of years and I can say it makes me happy to see other people as fanatical about this place as I am.

To answer your question, yes I did walk into the extended queue at Wildfire to get the photos of the old Float Trip flume. I know I am in the minority here, but I miss that old attraction even having grown up with American Plunge.
