Branson Talk / Branson West McDonald's
« on: August 04, 2011, 08:16:38 PM »
Since I want to make sure we cover every square inch of our memories, does anyone pine for the days when the McDonald's in Branson West was "Old Time" themed with tables covered in SDC-type merchandise bags and the old wagon wheels, etc?

No matter how excited we were to get close to SDC, we always stopped there.  It was the true "gateway" to SDC and we knew we were almost there!!!

Random Talk / Jennings Osborne
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:36:58 PM »
Rarely has there ever been Arkansas & Disney mentioned in the same breath (well, except for me - HA!).   For those who haven't heard yet, Jennings Osborne passed yesterday.   The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights showed you how just a little Ozarkian ingenuity can amaze people at the Happiest Place on Earth.  This year's display should really be amazing in honor of him.

Okay, so I didn't really...but I've got to ask a burning question.   I've been part of the board for quite some time and I've always noticed that the "Dip n' Dots" guy is referenced on the Main Page.   I've searched the threads and still can't find this person and what rumors they may know.   ;D

Can maybe one of the original members solve the mystery of the Dip n' Dots guy?

SDC Memories/ Park History / Late To The Party...50th Swag!
« on: April 25, 2011, 06:03:22 PM »
Living 1,300 miles away makes it difficult to just "pop" into the City whenever I want.  Even so, I was sad that I missed the big 50th event for the Employees since I was a Citizen for four years.

Lo and behold though, look what I got in the mail from my Aunt June Ward today!!!!!  My world is complete!!!

Random Talk / Remembering Mike Jayne
« on: August 25, 2010, 05:44:35 PM »
Not sure if you all heard of Mike Jayne before (I never knew him by "Mitch") but he was very much a part of the Ozark bluegrass scene.

I ran across this last night while looking at a Bluegrass site.  I grew up in Salem, Missouri (now I call Northwest Arkansas my "home" when not in Orlando), and Mike "Mitch" Jayne was a local hero to me as he appeared on the Andy Griffith Show as part of the Darling Family.

This also has significance because of Salem's other famous son - Rodney Dillard who performed at SDC, to which we have posted many threads about, was also part of TAGS and very much part of the Ozark music scene.  I met Mike a few times as a kid and it was really the first thing I had to meeting someone that was a celebrity.  I had almost forgotten about him until I ran across this.  It might be old news to some of you, and might be new like it was to me.

Dollywood Discussion / Nice DW FaceBook Poll
« on: August 24, 2010, 05:55:48 PM »
If you follow Dollywood on FaceBook, it appears that they had a poll of sorts that seemed pretty cool.  Almost as if they were scanning our brains here on the SDC Forum:  Here is what I copied from their site (no idea where the actual poll was) and some of it makes no sense without the actual "poll" in front of me, but here are the results anyway.

Ozark Marketplace / Knott's Berry Farm and more!
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:34:35 PM »
Hey gang!  I stumbled upon a really great site that contains a few parks from California.  In particular, there is a great section on Knott's Berry Farm.  If you don't know the story about this Anaheim park, you should recognize it for being the first "official" theme park as it pre-dates SDC and it's giant cousin down the street...Disneyland.

There is a bit of an SDC connection to Knott's as well.  During the early days of Silver Dollar City, many of the "citizens" went out to California to benchmark ideas for SDC.  Really?!?!  You ask?  Yep!  Aunt June describes her trip to get inspiration for the candy factory that we all know and love today.  Also, they had a Butterfield Stage Coach attraction, Silver Dollar Saloon (yep, that was it's real name), log flume ride, and many other SDC-centric attractions that look very familiar.  They say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Lots of really great archival postcards, photos, menus, etc posted here.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Where would you live?
« on: July 20, 2010, 08:24:44 PM »
I suppose this counts as an SDC Fantasy (like the previous thread), but for a moment, think of SDC as a real place.  What?!  Of course it's real, silly!  What I mean is, imagine if you could pick a place to live once all the guests left for the day...where would it be?

I used to do this as a kid a lot.  As I walked through the city, I would sometimes just absorb myself in the fantasy so much that I would pretend for at least an hour or so that I really did live in Silver Dollar City.  Then as I got the chance to work there, it made my interactions with the guests all that much more realistic.

Pick any place that speaks to you.  For instance, the old taffy shop location down by the railroad would be where I would call home.  Something about the well-worn floors, that great mysterious second floor and the homey-ness of it all.

No limitations of course so if someone picks the same place then I guess I'll be having company over and better put on another pot of beans!  Nothing like that neighborly Silver Dollar City spirit!

Random Talk / Old School Summer In The Ozarks
« on: July 11, 2010, 10:26:00 PM »
The summer got me thinking of things I used to do around the area when it got hot outside.

Does anyone remember going to the Hay Swings in Ozark or the (sadly) now-defunct Hydra-Slide in Springfield?  I think the hay swings are still in operation, but was just told the Hydra-Slide is gone.  Sad.

Other Parks / Har-Ber Village
« on: July 09, 2010, 06:35:51 PM »
One of the great things about living in the Ozarks were the many distractions aside from Branson.  I had almost forgotten about Har-Ber Village just a bit over the state line in Oklahoma.  We used to go all the time!  This was (and still is) a very odd but quaint collection of "stuff" in old timey displays that you walk through and peer into.

Not sure if anyone else has ever been?

Branson Talk / "Winter's Bone" Movie filmed in the Ozarks
« on: June 11, 2010, 06:09:40 PM »
This caught my ear on NPR today.  This film is apparently set and filmed in Taney county and made it all the way to the Sundance Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury prize!  The film is called Winter's Bone.

Does anyone know why The City is closed during the peak summer period over the span of two weeks (7 operating days)?

Dollywood Discussion / Before Dollywood...

There was, of course, Silver Dollar City (East).  I finally found my oversize jumbo park map from our visit in 1983 and posted it on my Flickr site.
