SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: Huck Finn's Tree Fort
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:31:51 PM »
This was a picture I took on our last visit to SDC the weekend after Thanksgiving 2010. I took the picture, thinking to myself, "Man I hope this isn't the last picture I take of Huck Finn's Hideout." We shall find out in March!

And as Grandpa on the train ride sometimes says: "Next time someone tells your 'Happy Holidays' you tell 'em 'Merry Christmas!"
So may we all have the Parade song stuck in our heads this Christmas season, because He truly is "The Greatest Gift of All"

Construction/Rumors / Re: SDC's 2011 Project
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:43:33 PM »
We talked to Becca and Joe at Becca's Weaving on Saturday (really nice people) and I asked them if they were staying at the same place once Half-Dollar opens and they said they were moving to the building where they're giving out the SDC Christmas Ornaments.  The old Butterfield Stage Depot they're in now will be incorporated into Half-Dollar Holler.

Well that's very interesting news Duelist! I was wondering about that shop, since it protrudes so much into Half Dollar Holler. It would make since that it would have to be incorporated/themed to that section.
I remember, as I am sure most of you do, when Becca's Weaving was the Taffy Shop.

I have been keeping up with this thread since page one, but I realize there are 56 pages too, so this might have already been posted and I forgot about it.
My wife and I were at SDC again on Sunday 19th (our 1 year Wedding Anniversary btw) :)
When we crossed the Swinging Bridge we noticed that there were flags, ribbons, etc on BOTH sides of the bridge. I wondered if there would be an attraction on the other side of the bridge or this had to do with plumbing/electrical.
Anyway, that was just something we had observed, sorry if it has been posted already!
On another note, we rode River Blast with the water turned off. We had our hot chocolate with us on the ride. It was VERY nice to float around and look at all the lights while sipping hot chocolate and NOT getting a TON of water in your eyes! haha
Have a great day Y'all

Construction/Rumors / Re: Grandfather's Mansion Re-hab?
« on: December 13, 2010, 09:51:09 AM »
so...It has been a couple months since anyone has said anything about Grandfathers Mansion. Anyone got any new news about the place?
My family visited OTC the weekend after Thanksgiving. I took my 14 year old niece, along with a 5 year old and 3 year old through Grandfathers Mansion. The rest of the family went through Carries Candles; and a bah humbug to them!  ;D The 14 year old darted off through it, as I held the 3 year old & 5 year old by the hands. I yelled at my niece saying "Get back here, you are missing EVERYTHING!" I just wanted her to experience everything I did as a child; its no fun if u just run thought it. The 3 & 5 year old's loved it; & I was so glad!
One thing that disappointed me, was the room that rocks back and forth as you cross the bridge, was not working. I made everyone stop & wait to see if it would start or not, and it didn't. I hope that gets fixed.
So anyway, that was my most recent experience through that wonderful SDC landmark.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: The Flooded Mine (Christmas of 90's)

Well I am glad to see so many responses to my post! This site is so great, I love being able to share so many thoughts and memories about SDC with other people who truly love the park and its wonderful history.
Another question about the Mine though, that I can't remember. Did they dye the water brown to look like chocolate? After seeing those signs about the chocolate, that got me to be thinking about the water, I do remember something was different about the water too.

Branson Talk / Re: Bed and Breakfasts
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:27:17 PM »
Although I would not consider it a 'true' bed & breakfast; The Bradford Inn is a wonderful place to stay with themed rooms and THE BEST breakfast we have ever had in Branson. The Bradford Inn is situated to look over the former Celebration City and much of the Strip. The front of the Hotel looks like 2 white Colonial Style homes with green shutters & doors; along with dormer windows. There is a smaller building in-between the two, that serves as the lobby and breakfast room. There are probably around a couple dozen rooms to choose from, each with its own theme. Family owned and operated; great place, check it out!

I think it is a good idea that the park is open on Thanksgiving EVENING. The fact that they are closed till 4:00, I would hope that would give the "citizern" time to spend with family and loved ones. I would, however, hate to see it open all day on Thanksgiving.
My family has spent about 3 Thanksgivings at the Park. Since our family is smaller, we would have our Thanksgiving meal at Molly's Mill Restaurant or Reunion Hall.  After our meal, we would gather around the Tree and watch "carol of the Bells" together (our favorite). Those are wonderful memories we all cherish.
The staff at the Restaurants were always very very pleasant (as typical), and we would visit with them about how they spent the morning and afternoon with their families; everyone seemed to be ok with the fact.
We spent Thanksgiving this year at home (in Arkansas), but we are heading up tomorrow morning to spend the weekend!  ;D

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Spiritual feelings at SDC
« on: November 12, 2010, 03:28:22 PM »
My Family always tries to visit the Wilderness Church at least once every time we visit SDC. I always feel Gods presence in that beautiful old church. Also, right before the tree lighting ceremony, when the speaker talks about the life of Jesus, we always get a warm fuzzy feeling. I also feel Gods presence during the train ride when "Grandpa" tells the real "Reason for the Season." I love the values that SDC was founded on, & I am very thankful that the company hasn't strayed from them.

Also for one or two Christmas's they had "The Night Before Christmas" displayed in lights that were sequinized to music and a narrator. This was placed on a platform in front of the waterfall. It is now used as one of the props during the train ride, but just stays lit up.

I have a picture of those slides in Tom Sawyers Landing. The picture was taken in 2005, with a good view of the slides, the rope course above, and the balloon ride. If someone could tell me how to upload a picture, I will put it on here!

Can someone tell me how to insert a picture? I have a good photo of Tom Sawyers Landing from 2005, showing the ropes course, tunnel slides and part of the balloon ride.

The playground was kept in place for several summers. Greedy Brothers disappeared after just the 1984 season.

Actually it was removed several years later. Maybe early 90's? I remember playing on this as a kid.  One of my favorite spots. Why did they get rid of the Greedy Brothers Shanty Town? It was a simple yet fun playground over the water.

Here is what's left of the old shanty town...

Yes, It was removed sometime in the 90's. I use to play in Shanty Town as a kid in the early 90's. I really enjoyed playing in there and being above the water like that was fun! My mom & dad would always share a pretzel at one of those tables and watch me as I played in Shanty Town. After that, it was time to go play in the ball pit, and climb the ropes course; which I was always scared my feet would go through! Good times!
