A bit bored tonight (rarely EVER happens), so I'll write about my trip to Dollywood the day before Christmas Eve.  It wasn't a destination - just passing through on my way out east.  The weather was rainy, there was a long line to the parking area, and we almost turned around to leave about 5:00. When we made it to parking, we were told to look hard for a spot as there were probably less than 15 left (and the tram wait could be 45 min.) We finally found one close enough that we could skip the tram.  It was close to 6 when we walked thru the gate, and my first impression was ...meh. The park was very lit up, but the lights at the front were mostly pink, purple, and blue - not so Christmasy, but very "in your face" Dolly!  The bakery was listed as having gluten free muffins, but there were none and no one seemed to know anything about them.  Very few places I can eat, but we found a restaurant that had a smoked ham dinner that I could eat with substitutions, and it was grea! I wish SDC had more plate dinners like this for $13.  We didn't have much time, so we walked toward the crafters area so hubs could see the blacksmithing.  I think it was on the way there we ran into the Glacier area - very cool!  Very, very cool! Hundreds of strands of twinkling lights above your head with wave patterns, fog machines, and space music symbolizing northern lights.  We loved it! The entire area was very cool with icy white lights, icebergs, bears, trees, etc.  The big tree looked very similar to SDC's, but with the addition of snow machines dropping pretty heavy amounts of snow on visitors near the tree. That was cool! The parade was okay; promoted Dolly quite a bit; not as good as SDC's.  I did like the guy with the banjo walking the line to entertain you with music as you waited for the parade. There were over 20,000 in the park that night.

My honest opinion?  I had very little time in the park, the roller coasters looked cool, the crafts are way more expensive than SDC - mugs from the pottery shop were $35.  Northern Light show was worth the trip! I liked it much more when I quit comparing it to SDC.  I still wouldn't make it a destination, but I wouldn't mind stopping by again to see the whole park, shows, and music. Oh, and there are no perks in the park unless you have the more expensive Silver Pass.

It's been busy around here.  On a trip to DC over Christmas, we stopped at Dollywood and Gatlinburg.  More on that later.  Headed to Hawaii and Maui in a few weeks and hopefully Yellowstone again next Fall.  Busy this year!

I've gone for a couple of years mostly because there was something I wanted that was on sale.  I am not a Black Friday shopper at all, but it was fun to walk around there.  Downside is nothing is open except shops.  We walked all over last year just trying to find a cup of coffee.  It's never been crowded.  I may go in tomorrow to pick up salsa.  I'll post a pic if I do.

Anyone attending Black Friday? If so, will you post if the jam/jellies/salsas are on sale? Last year they were 25% off, so I bought several that we like.  I don't see them listed this year, and it's the only thing I would be interested in.  Let us know!

I second that!  It was an awesome day to be there - temps in mid 60's, partial sun, and misty on and off with rain until about 6:30.

Today was a great day to be at the park! Hubs and I got there about 1:30, and attendance was moderate even with several buses lined up to unload.  Park looked great, temps were mild, and we walked in to the shows we wanted to see (Scrooge and Wonder Life).  Both of them were nearly full by the time they started. At 6:30 a call came in to the Candle Shop while we there warning that the rain/lightning coming in was expected until 2 am.  It was picking up steadily, so we decided to leave.  As we walked to the Main Square, lights were being shut down including the tree.  It was weird seeing them turned off, but I assume that was the right decision.  I can't imagine the cost (and work) of replacing them after a lightning strike.

I both agree/disagree with the last 3 posts.  Pumpkin Nights was just "okay" for me - nothing special.  I loved the themed look of the pumpkins (and the evening hours), but... overall, more is needed than just piles of pumpkins.  The rest of the park took a nosedive for Fall, and I missed that!  Bring back the scarecrows, flowers, gourds, wreaths, banners, straw bales, flags, and garlands.  And, spread it throughout the park - not just pumpkin themed areas.  As far as the cowboy fest, I honestly never paid any attention to it until a couple years ago and realized what I was missing. It fits better than the pumpkin theme, even though those pumpkins are really pulling in families.  Losing Kent Rollins and Buck Taylor is a real loss, IMO. I miss the larger number of crafters, but I don't miss the cheap, crappy, Chinese made crap that made it's way into the park through quite a few vendors the last few years.

FYI at the park right now. It's getting pretty packed. Stop 2-3 is full as well as much of the handicapped preferred parking area. Stop 5 lot is already about half full. Electric scooters are also sold out today so be sure to call ahead or make necessary preparations if you have any disabled guests.

I got there about 9:30 and handicapped parking up front was full. There was a steady stream coming in, including several school buses.  We left about 1:30, and there were still quite a lot coming in.  Weather was perfect, and it was a great day to be there.  Everyone on park seemed to be in a good mood, and the crowds didn't appear too bad at all.
