SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: Remember the "Sippers?"
« on: June 01, 2014, 12:15:02 PM »
the problem with the Sippers was that people didn't keep them as souvenirs. Instead they tended to pitch them over the sides of the paths where they would be found floating in every stream pond and other waterways, dangling from tree branches and generally causing an unsightly mass. Also they were decidedly out of theme in an era when even formica countertops were looked at as un Silver Dollar City. They came and went quickly along with the remotecontroled boats on Lake silver that came that same year.

I love the smell of Cosmacoat in the morning. I knew spring was finally here wnen that new layer went down at Silver Dollar City. but back to the subject of this thread, my favorite hidey hole in days of yore was the roof of the glass blowers shop. Back in the 70's when I was playing on the old Valley theater stage which is now the magic shop in front of Thunderation, there was a back stairway between the glass shop and the restrooms next door. I would head up the stairs and sit on the rooftop with a large mug of soda and a good book so between shows I could read and watch all the people walk up and down the street below. My favorite publicly accessible spot was the old rest area across from the depot which was removed when half dollar holler was installed. It was a lovely place to just sit and listen to the birds.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: A Piece of History?

silver dollar city has never had much love for its ownpast. They have destroyed so many momentos over the years. At one time the entertainment department videode every show on park every year. The next year they just recorded over the old tapes rather than purchase new ones. At one time I knew numerous dump sites around the park where signage atmosphere pieces and even merchandise was merely pitched over the hill into a mound. At one time I had the world's smallest Natural Bridge sign from the float trip hanging in my room because I found it in a junk pile back in the early 70's I was as a tourist walking down a path behind the first log cabin that Silver Dollar City erected at their campgrounds. I was surprised to find a pile of the old billboards with the pointing miner on them in a pile back in the woods where I'm sure they eventually rotted away. Jack and peed have never been overly sentimental about their business as so much of their old papers maps etc merely went to the garbage. This is where these unusual pieces have come from.

I'm still around. Find that reveling in nostalgia can be too dangerous for me.I still feel the need to weigh in every once in awhile. I was reminded of the site here when I came across a box of papers that my mother, Jack's former secretary, salvaged from Marys desk drawers up on cleaning out her office after her death. She(mom) didn't have the heart to throw all that stuff out, so she removed all the personal papers kept all the Silver Dollar City memorabilia. As far as Jack was concerned it was all garbage. So now I have it and I'm not sure what to do with it. It's an odd assortment of extremely rare and sometimes boring research notes on mill wheels, old maps newspaper articles mixed with things like a matchbook from the Silver Dollar City outpost in Leesburg Missouri, Lead sdc coins, publicity photos from The Beverly Hillbillies, even an autographed picture of Marlin Pirkins from the pre  SDC Marlin Perkins zoo era. I've considered eBay, I could certenly use the money, but breaking it all up seems wrong.so in my indecision I ended up here. Mussing again. Sigh....

Someone find a SDC brown bag and look for the ice cream parlor add. At one time Pete was advertised there.

"I bet Old Guy knew all of this but he was holding out on us!"
Holding out? This is from a posting last march on this very site! (Random Stuff Roundup)
"Picture the Frisco Barn a bit past it on the left and behind the train a 100 yards or so, the Waterboggin Tower. You got off at the midtown depot when you arrived in town. Cool way to enter town, but restrictive in capacity. The poor little trains were underpowered too. Before the track was regraided there was actualy a chain lift to pull the train up one slope. The robbery was actualy designed to give the train a place to top up on water because that would also run out before getting "Home"."Dig people dig! ;)
P.S. Keep in mind the train ran the other way back then.

Here's a postcard with what I'm assuming is the old train depot:

Here is more from the same Thread
The building to the left of the curlycue bridge over the train tracks in midtown, is the sight of the origanal train depot!. Last time I looked there were still stairs down there. Another old train dept. was just about where the red/gold hall is now. This was the "new" entrance to the park after the square ceased being parking. You bought your tickets and boarded the train which went in the opposite direction than now, and arrived at the city in midtown. Cool huh?

SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: Your Worst SDC experience

I was playing music down by the lumbercamp the day of FITH's accedent.
I was told to move to the middle of the street in front of the Saloon and they roped off the street behind me. I was given no instructions other than to keep people entertained but not say anything about what had happened. I had to listen to people bitch about not being able to go down the street and could say nothing. It was a sad day.

As I recall there is a picture of the warden in the entrance building to the mine ride but I can't recall the name on it.
