SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: SDC Memories
« on: July 14, 2015, 10:13:10 AM »
Another memory permanently burned into my brain out of sheer terror...

I was around 8, so this would have been in the late 70s.  This occurred in the vicinity of the train trestle near the Saloon.  I had gotten separated from my family, so I approached an employee/character and told him that I was lost.  So what does he do?  He shoots his gun up in the air twice and yells, "Does anyone know this boy?  He's done lost his family.  If you know him, come and get him!".  Well that didn't help me much!  Then he said he would stay with me until my parents came back to find me.

I doubt if that is the current protocol for handling a lost child, but to be honest I'm glad that was the way he did it.  It makes for a great memory and a fun story to tell my girls.   :)

I also vividly remember the "walk of shame"...  being led back through the line by my Mom because I was absolutely terrified of the Flooded Mine.  This would have been in the late 70s.  I also remember my older brother tormenting me the rest of the day because I was too "chicken" to ride it!   :)

I have watched all the episodes of "Branson Taxi" that have aired.  Way better than "Branson Famous"!   ;)

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Memorial Day Weekend Crowds
« on: May 18, 2015, 03:03:56 PM »
Howdy!

My family is toying with the idea of going to SDC over the Memorial Day weekend.  This will be our only chance to enjoy the Bluegrass & BBQ Festival.  Are we totally out of our minds?!?  I have never been at SDC during a holiday, so I am not sure if the crowd level will be unbearable.  Has anyone been to SDC during a Memorial Day weekend in the recent past?

Thanks, guys.

I live in Bourbon, just east of Leasburg.  I remember (vaguely) The Outpost when it was in operation.  I remember being told by my Dad that SDC chose the Leasburg location on speculation that the Meramec Dam was going to be put in at Sullivan.  Had the dam been put in, it would have been a prime location at the junction of I-44 and Highway H.

I have many fond memories of listening to John play, and then later John and Jan.  I truly wish they would play at the park - perhaps at least during a festival.

Their website can be found at...

I'm not sure how many were at the park on 9/7/13, but let me tell you - it was absolutely packed!  CoxHealth had an employee appreciation day.  They provided free tickets for all their employees plus their families.  I was told by a Cox employee that 24,000 free tickets were distributed.  The park stayed open until 10:00pm, but you had to have a blue wristband identifying you as a Cox employee in order to ride anything.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Outlaw Run Documentary
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:20:25 AM »
I came across a really well done documentary entitled "From Dreams to Screams: Outlaw Run at Silver Dollar City" detailing the design and construction of Outlaw Run.  There are interviews with Joel Manby (Herschend Family Entertainment CEO), Brad Thomas (Silver Dollar City GM) and Fred Grubb (Rocky Mountain Construction Co-Founder).  This video was produced in conjunction with Coaster.net.

The producers also released a "behind the scenes" video.

I'm still looking forward to my first trip to SDC in 2013.  Looks like it will be next month.

I used to try to be discrete when doing this (ie, step way out of view to make the transfer and wait a few minutes before going back for the second refill).  But anymore my thinking is, "Why bother!  They know I was just here anyhow."  So I just step off to the side, make the transfer, and get right back in line.  No server has said anything except..  "Wow!  That was quick!"   :)
