Random Talk / Re: Your Travels Thread (2020)

My first travel of the year was to Birmingham, Alabama a couple weeks ago for Kami-Con. I got to try Alabama white bbq sauce for the first time ever and OMG it was DIVINE. And then at the end of the weekend, we went to Texas de Brazil, and WOW, that place is totally worth the money. The meats were excellent, and the fish stew was AMAZING. Super highly recommend trying it out sometime, though you'll wanna save up for it, as it's nearly $50/person. But again, totally worth the price. The amount of filet mignon our table consumed more than made up for the price alone.

Omg, that Rocking Boat ride looks AMAZING!!! It would be perfect for a new version of Flooded Mine (I don't know about it replacing American Plunge, 'cause I can't tell from that video if they can do tall drops, which is the main feature for AP).

Got an e-mail today titled "10 Things You Don't Want To Miss in 2020!" and a couple things caught my eye.

Firstly, I don't remember if they'd already had info/images up for the new cinnamon bread shop, but they're available now on the 2020 Rivertown page.

Quote from site: "Silver Dollar City’s world-famous cinnamon bread finds a NEW home in Rivertown at Clara Belle’s Cinnamon Bread. Here our culinary craftsmen are hard at work creating the ooey-gooey goodness your family craves with double the oven space and more options like Apple Cinnamon Bread, Peach Cinnamon Bread, Time Traveler Cinnamon Bread drizzled with caramel and chocolate and of course, the classic original…with so many choices one loaf is never enough!"

And the cowboys are coming back to the Fall Festival!!!

At the moment, the only traveling I have set is the end of this month; going with the manga library to Kamicon in Birmingham, AL.

We're hoping to make it to Six Flags a few times this year, since our memberships are good until... October, I believe. The most likely SF we'll be at are Great America and St. Louis. Wouldn't mind being able to go to Over Georgia again, though; they had a great collection of coasters!

The walk behind the falls was open until at least 2004-ish? The last time I walked back there, my ex-stepmom and ex-stepsis were with us..... I just can't remember what year my dad remarried (I never bothered to memorize their anniversary, lol), so the above is just an estimate.

I always enjoyed going back there; gotta love the Eighth Wonder of the World ;)

Thanks, Jipper! It still seems confusing but now I can actually understand what they were describing!

Good points, Shave. I would LOVE to see the Spirit of 76 project revived somehow. I read the entire 100+ page proposal and it was gonna be SO COOL.

Well. This is definitely very interesting! Would love to see a map that shows the changes; I'm trying my best to visualize based on the descriptions in the link, but having a bit of a hard time doing so.

That's a very good point. I didn't really know the full story of FitH until I bought the Story of Silver Dollar City book by Crystal Payton. I can see where the general public would only have a very general idea of the ride's story (a town being burned down). Maybe in a new version of FitH, they could have story signs in the queue or something.

Construction/Rumors / Re: SDC's 2019 Project(s) and Park Developments

This is definitely where Dollywood got an advantage with that Wilderness Plaza - they put a fountain in the middle and for LumiNights they put in a giant pumpkin tree and then the framing is already there for their new (as of last year) Christmas tree that is similar to what SDC is getting. SDC doesn't have a wide open space in the park like DW does, hence why the backstage area was used for Pumpkin Nights.... Nowhere else to put it.

Oh my GOD. I just did some poking around, and these people are REALLY hilarious. Pretty sure this lawsuit isn't just about the name of his haunted house... He's trying to build an entire theme park called Mystic City USA. And as of May 2019, on the Mystic Motel Facebook page, they were asking for prayers that they could raise money to buy the land they wanted for the park...

Here's the video of him and his son calling for prayers:

Other Parks / Re: Six Flags in a bid to merge with Cedar Fair
« on: October 20, 2019, 11:12:35 PM »
Yeah, I was gonna say... The redo of the entrance of WoF was a HUUUUUGE update for that park. And since then, they've been adding little landscaping embellishments and what-not. And the restaurant this year is not a "re-theme" - it's an all new restaurant built from the bottom up. Not every year has to be a "ride year", just like SDC and Dollywood don't always have a "ride year".

Personally, I think WoF is best owned by Cedar Fair. Having Six Flags (or Herschend) buy it would, as Tmboote pointed out, result in a lessening of competition in Missouri, and I don't think that would help any of our three parks. I think things are fine just as they are.

Maybe next year they'll extend the length of this fest... I got an e-mail yesterday from SDC reminding people that there are only 6 days left for Craft Days/Pumpkin Nights, and it kinda shocked me 'cause it feels as if this fest only just started. Maybe if they extend it next year, the crowds will spread out just enough to be comfortable each day.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but I'm wondering if Dollywood is poaching some of the craftspeople...? I was surprised last year to find a craftsperson there at DW who was from Missouri, as I'd expect them to be at SDC since it is closer. So I wonder if DW is offering better money/opportunities. We have to remember that SDC and DW both focus on crafts for the fall, so there is going to be a limited number of people to invite and those people will have to decide which park offers better opportunities.

I'm wondering if Dollywood is managing to grab more of the craftsmen than SDC? I know last year when my friends and I were at DW for Halloween, there were a fair amount of craftsmen there and at least one was from Missouri, which surprised me because I would've expected that person to be at SDC 'cause it'd be closer. So I'm wondering if Dollywood is offering more money/time/etc. to craftspeople and therefore are getting them all, which leaves SDC a bit short since both parks have their crafts festivals at the same time.

I think this is where Dollywood has an advantage in that the main park pathway is a loop. Their LumiNights is basically the opposite of SDC's Pumpkin Nights in terms of where the main part of it is. In DW, the main loop of the park is decorated for LumiNights, so you see it pretty much everywhere, except over in the County Fair area (the DW version of Grand Expo). I imagine SDC will be running surveys and what-not to see what the guests liked most and least about Pumpkin Nights. This is the first year, so I know they're just dipping their toes in the water. Hopefully maybe next year they'll expand it. In fact, maybe that's their long-term plan - start small by keeping it just in the Expo area, then expand it into another area of the park the next year, so they can then advertise "Bigger, Brighter Pumpkin Nights!"
