Construction/Rumors / Re: New Parking Lot/Road Plans
« on: June 29, 2008, 11:08:13 PM »
Is there any talk of charging a parking fee once the new road/lot is finished?  You have to pay to park at Wild Adventures, but that's probably because the system was already in place when HFE bought the place.  Do you have to park at Dollywood?

Other Parks / HFE's WILD ADVENTURES
« on: June 29, 2008, 10:55:51 PM »
On our trip back from Florida, we came through Georgia and took a four mile trip over to the entrance to Wild Adventures.  The place looks just like it's described - like some farmer started an exotic animal collection, started letting people visit the animals, and then added rides.  The place is just plopped in the middle of some farm land - which is all right - but it lacks the character of the Ozarks.  Here are some really bad pics of the entrance sign and some billboards (We weren't willing to pay to park or go inside after such a long trip.):

Does ZZ Top really fit in with HFE?

Do these look like CC ads to you?

We were just there, and they were building some kind of dinosaur theater family attraction - maybe a dinner theater - but I'm not sure if it was part of PI or part of the Marketplace.  It looked like a massive project that would add something special to the area instead of just another night club.

Old Guy, do you have any information about Mercy Purvis the Third-and-a-Half?  I believe he might have been the best comedian who ever graced a Branson stage.  And when he took to the zip line from the waterwheel in Echo Hollow...totally unexpected.  This was during the Dillards and the Branson Brothers era) still the best evening shows they've ever offered.

I guess I'm becoming and old guy, too.

Branson Talk / Re: How many are also Shepherd of the Hills fans?

SotH is definately a great show with good effects and an excellent sound system.  It's packed with history that we often talk about in regards to rides and other attractions in the area.  With much of this history being erased by projects like the Branson Landing, SotH and SDC are two of the last refuges of this history.  I think you just have to visit the performance at SotH and tour Old Matt's cabin at least once, but I'm not a fan of any of the surrounding gimmicks they've added or tried.  Even much of Old Matt's cabin has been compromised with furnishings not always being of the period.  Plus, I thought Inspiration Tower was always a weird addition.  I remember when Mercy made fun of it in the evening show at SDC.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Security, bag checks?
« on: June 29, 2008, 12:14:27 PM »
Outside food and drinks are always allowed, but I disagree that security checks are all for show.  They did check bags for the remainder of the 2001 season after 9/11, and maybe for 2002 (I don't remember.), but they didn't last for very long.  Kennedy Space Center had the strictest security when we visited recently.  I had to turn on every camera and iPod with me to prove that they were actually functioning devices.  They may not ever catch anyone by checking like that, but that doesn't mean someone wouldn't have tried something heinous if they didn't check at all.

Other Parks / Re: Death at Six Flags over Georgia

As tragic as this story is, this should not reflect negatively on Six Flags, unless they put a sign on the fence that invited people to "Please climb me and try to touch the feet of people when they ride by".  This really wasn't a case of the kid "wandering into the path" of the ride.  I sympathize with the family of this kid - another teenage death that could have been avoided by following the rules.

I won't miss it.  We visited the place when it first opened, but I hate the club scene.  They could have done the same thing with a family atmosphere and a Disney feel.

More "Don't Look in this Hole"s!  I'd go for a million dollar investment like that.  Those little items are what makes SDC so lovable.

Would the Forgotten Crafts area be large enough?  Then Thunderhead could sit as the new centerpiece of a lumberjack area just as it led the way to the development of DW's lumberjack area.  It would put the ride smack in the middle of the other two coasters though.

I understand how things get selected or tossed out based on market research, but it just seems that so many projects have been started and never materialized completely.

Of course there was that "Carousel of Seasons" idea that was promoted at one time.  Maybe that's in the works for a future project.  My daughter's going to be REALLY upset when she sees that her favorite horse, Princess, is being sent to the barn with the other horses on the carousel.  That's her favorite ride.

I heard yesterday from a reputable source that the carousel is going into storage it will not be going up in the Grand Expo....
I hope this means it will be refurbished.  It needs some TLC.

OK, so let's chase this rabbit:  does anyone want to make predictions about the new look of the old rides?  Becky's Carousel will need to be renamed for the Expo, but Skychase Balloons could keep its name.  I would hope they would be repainted for their new locations, and I look forward to seeing Expo signage for the queues.
