Branson Talk / Re: Branson Declining?
« on: May 18, 2008, 05:36:09 PM »
It's certainly not declining in terms of visitors, at least to my knowledge. It just looks bad right now because, as with the rest of the country, Branson is reeling from years upon years of reckless developement based around catering to automobiles. Now that people don't want to drive, you've got to have a pretty damn good attraction to bring them in. All those strip-malls, side-shows, and small-time attractions that have sprouted up like weeds all around Branson don't stand a chance in todays market.

Random Talk / Re: The SDCFans Lounge

I just saw Prince Caspian last night and thought it was pretty good, though it lacks the charm of the first in the series. There were a lot of weird religious allusions as well, seemed to have made a lot more sense in the books than they did in the movie.

I don't think I'll be seeing too many other movies this year though unless I can catch them at a discount theater. The only major theater near me now charges $8 a pop, and I can't subjugate myself to those prices just to sit in a chair and watch a big TV for a couple of hours. Maybe I will for Wall-E, but I don't know if I can sit through the preview for that chihuahua movie again.

The active setting determines whether it actually shows up on the site or not. So don't set it to be active unless you are done with it.

I finally got the user articles feature back up - so if you feel like writing something for some reason, check it out. Look in your profiles for a link that says "write an article". If no such link exists and you want to write something, contact me.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Going Green
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:55:39 PM »
Don't be fooled just because the park doesn't go to lengths to make sure you know that they're green. While most "green" entities spend a little on actually being green and a lot on marketing it, the Herschends have been quietly doing more for the environment than most for ages. There's other things they can do, and some of those things will be coming soon I'm sure, but the park is by no means not green enough for my standards.

Discounts and Cost-Saving Tips / When times are tight...
« on: May 13, 2008, 09:13:57 PM »
I figured some of us could use a place to share cost-saving tips, considering how many people have confessed skipping out on Branson trips this year due to high costs of travel. Use this board to post and sweet deals you've come across for Branson attractions, or any good ways to save money on trips - it'll help someone and their family be able to make it down to Branson easier.

Hey - here's some good news: I figured out what was keeping me from implementing the user articles feature. Unless something comes up, I'll probably be able to get that feature up and running this week, and the old articles from the last site version will be back up as well.

^Well... they've fixed it as much as they will fix it. There's still numerous problems with IE7's CSS implementation and support, but it's light years better than dealing with IE6. The world will breath a sigh of relief when IE8 rolls out, though that will mark the end of a lot of my business... :-\

Just take the day easy and go in whatever direction seems good at the time. SDC is a great place to wander.

You should really make sure and hit up the glassblowers though, the guys in there are usually really funny and entertaining, as well as amazing crafters.

^Yes, they watch the launch and the lifthill, and they can see if you are doing anything against the rules. Oftentimes they'll confront you and escort you from the park if you do anything overtly dangerous or illegal. I guess this guy managed to fly under the radar, but he's exceptionally lucky. You saw how he couldn't control the camera - if it had flown out of his hand he, SDC, and some innocent bystander would be tangled up in a multi-million dollar legal conundrum right now.

Well, it's still going... http://www.1branson.com/forum/t35149.html

Looks like they're still a long way off schedule though. It'll sure be interesting to see the new bridge and everything though, I just hope they through in some green space somewhere in there.

I really don't know. I've been hoping to at least get the user editorials feature going, since it's the most simple, but I haven't had time to figure out how to implement an interface on it so that an average user could use it easily enough. Maybe I'll get it done next week, but I've got some other personal projects to do first.

As for the other stuff I mentioned a long time ago, some of it will come out in a test version in a few weeks, and will be improved upon when I re-do the site one more time over the summer. I won't even be able to start on most of that until the start of June though, as I've got my next two weeks filled with work, and then a Cedar Point trip after that.

Tch, this is why I want to get this site to the point that it pretty much runs itself - I just can't be around to work on it all the time, and there are times when I can't work on it for long stretches at a time.

^You ride around in a boat and shoot at targets and spectators, all the while getting hit with effects and water cannons manned by the spectators. It's basically the Flooded Mine, but with water, and effects that shoot back, and spectators with water cannons... or something like that.

^Indeed, I still haven't worked out the many IE6 bugs, so anyone using IE6 or below will hardly be able to even use the site. I plan to eventually work those bugs out, but it's not really worth the time right now.

Yeah, again - it's not that it looks bad, it just doesn't look real, and I prefer and value realisticness. It's apparently a big hit though, so I definitely see one coming to Brason soon.
