General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: 2013 Trip Reviews...
« on: September 30, 2013, 11:01:44 AM »
Our Saturday was a VERY pleasant visit right up till about 3.  Then the bottom fell out of the clouds.

We hit the lots at Stop 2 about 8 and got our own personal tramride to the gate.  There, we had a long talk with Jill, one of the picture takers--whom we have gotten to know over the past couple years.  Wonderful person!

The normal breakfast at Molly's preceded my wife grabbing a couple pins to trade.  (One of the pins broke while still on the card, and the folks at HH were very helpful in exchanging it for her.)  She went to trade at the Apple House--we again got to talk with the lady there, who is another wonderful person.  We also resupplied with fruit butters.

Then the Pickers.  Poor Walt broke a guitar string in the middle of a number and had to borrow   :D

We saw the Stunt show and the Trick Riding show.  The boys--as expected--loved the Stunt show.  The Trick Riding show didn't have very much riding at all--just one act.  Seems like a nice group of kids trying to keep a family tradition alive, but they ought to revisit their priorities.

We rode the train twice.  The first time in the morning, there was no line, and the train (4 cars) left without every seat filled.  The Bolin boys drew the skit out--Ma disavowed them--and the conductor didn't know what day it was, either.  We could easily tell they had a lot of fun with that performance.  It took longer than usual and was much appreciated!  Unfortunately, by the second ride in the afternoon, the rain had started, and the boys just waved at the train as it went by.

The one trip on FM was uncrowded.  They didn't even use the que inside.  Music and animatronics all seemed in fine fettle.

We bought two bottles of Black kettle seasoning at the Culinary School as my family really likes it, and they say their supply for next year is not secure.

There is a new consession in the wing added to Christmas Hollow--it's some sort of girlie, sparkly place with frilly stuff for little girls and a halo hairdo.  We did buy a hair band for the sister of our godson whose B-day party is next week.

When the rain started, my boys regretted the fact that they had left ponchos in the car.  The younger one has a cold, so we decided to skip the last turn thrugh the crafters--a BIG disappointment, though they were covering up their crafts, anyway--and headed out about 4.  Along with 90% of everybody else.

We stopped in OM so that the younger boy could buy an instrument at Cedar Creek; the older one bought another set of hammers for his dulcimer.

The attendants had the tram loading line back up underneath the roof, and they were pushing trams and busses through there as fast as they could load them--a good attempt to handle the sudden crowd as quickly and dryly as possible.  But once we got on the tram, is was like riding a submarine--a very FAST submarine.  No hope of staying dry, but the exposure time was cut to a minimum.

I really wish we could get another day of Harvest Fest thsi year, but it isn't to be--next time will be during OTC.  But at least it was a mostly good day for it--beautiful weather up till it wasn't beautiful anymore  ;)  Park wasn't crowded at all.

Oh, and see the Lye Soap thread for my report on that visit.

I dropped by Buck Taylor and he said he could not be 100% sure it was his dad. But he did say if it was it would have been done in California and it would have been a voice over. He also said that it sounded like something his dad would have done. He was very nice and friendly but busy. Many folks coming to see him.

Same-same, though he wasn't very busy when we were there.

I wonder how many of us asked  :D

My wife and I spent a great deal of time talking with the delightful lady who ran the operation--note past tense:  this past Saturday was her LAST.  The soap will be made through the end of October by another delightful lady who had previously been assigned as a choclateer.

Lye is a problem:  it is regulated in just about any amount because of the blasted meth makers.

The retiring citizen made it clear that she did not know what was going to happen to the operation, which leaves me some hope that it will return.

We asked what her operation made last year, and she was not reluctant to tell us--I just don't know how broadly the number should be publicized.  BUT I can say with NO DOUBT that it was a large enough number to make my jaw drop.  The revenue from Lye Soap was well past the middle of 5 figures.  That ain't chump change!

We bought 3 logs to get us through the winter, but it is possible that the operation WILL return.  Let us make our voices heard!

Maybe enough encouragement would create the will . . . .

I wonder if the current formula of building things that exclude the elderly is shortsighted.

Of course it's short-sighted, but it is part and parcel of our culture's worship of youth and novelty, which, when you think about it, are the entithesis of SDC.

Too many people are addicted to the Latest, Greatest, Fastest, Up-to-THE-Minute, NOW, Adrenalin-laced, Newest Whiz-Bang-Gimcrack.  An institution dedicated to recalling the past, slowing down, and enjoying the roses (and trees, etc.) either has to abandon its essence or whither.  Either way, it will be lost.

I intend to enjoy it all I can till that sorrowful day.

In any case, our whole society is afflicting itself with an unsustainable addiction.  I will mourn for SDC, but I fear for my children (and theirs).

This is really a shame.

My family buys several logs a year for ourselves and some extras as gifts to others.  I hope there is some available this weekend so we have enough to tide us over till we find another source.

For me and my family, the lye soap is worth a dozen Outlaw Runs, but I recognize how atypical we are.  I also recognize that the City has to make money.

But I don't know, given the budgets involved, that it would hurt so much for the big-billed attractions to do a little more subsidizing of the back-woods stuff.

We're hoping to get down there a week or two either side of Oct 1.  I don't mind the heat so much--I wear wool in it, after all!--but these past few and next few weeks are Busy!

Here's a bit of sparkle on the Yocum story.

When I lived in the area--'67 - '72--I lived not far at all from Bread Tray Mountain (in Baxter), and a family friend, with whom I often stayed, lived under the shadow of the mountain.  At the intersection of Highway H (which, IIRC is Old 86) and the side road H-18, there was the remains of a run-down farm house/shack, a lot of junk cars ('20s - '50s) and an expanse of over-grown, fallow fields leading right up to the foot fo the moutnain.  There lived a pair of old man, brothers, by the name of Yocum.  Our family friend told us to be wary of them, as they had a reputation of being reclusive and unfriendly, and they were supposed to be running a still.  No mention that I remember was ever made of Yocum dollars, but the mountain was generally considered to be haunted by the locals.

The last time I went by there (about 3 years ago), the junk cars were long gone and the shack had fallen into complete ruin, but the fields were still untended, just more covered with brush and trees.  I have no idea what happened to the family friend who lived up the road (long dead, I suppose), but his place had fallen into ruin as well, and his boat dock down on the lake is gone.

Funny how the legends and the people persisted so long.

Oh, BTW, I should vote:  FM is the one for me.  I do not like coasters, and I have always considered FITH to be an interloper than ruined the SDC that I loved as a kid.  I was stunned when I saw the first ads for it the year after we left the area.  ;D :P

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Favorite Ride

The Frisco Silver dollar Line, the Flooded mine, the Stage Caoch, the Float Trip.

Alas! but the latter two are just memories.  Since none of these is an option on the poll, I didn't vote.

284
I think walking around the park, in the dark, with NO OTC lighting would be very "calming", because as mentioned most of the people would be in line at the rides!!!

Great point; I agree all around.
