General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: 2016 Trip Reviews
« on: March 28, 2016, 10:47:48 PM »
I didn't experience most of these problems on Opening Day--we didn't get down to the bottom of the hill by the LumberCamp, for example--but that day may have been too early for the crowd.

Still, the feeling was very positive that day, for which I am grateful.

One complaint I really don't have much of is waiting in line.  Other than the train and FM (and an occasional romp on LR), you'd have to hold me at gunpoint to do any of the rides.  I can't stand coasters or any of their "thrill" ilk, so those lines never bother me.  I suppose if the rides were the reason I go to the city, I would be similarly unhappy, so I don't dismiss the problem, but I am glad that I can say I am not bothered by it personally.

The only reason I would regret the loss of every "thrill" ride in the city is that it couldn't be made to pay these days.  Otherwise, take me back to pre-'72.  A real thrill ride for me would be a time machine, I guess.

We were over by the flagpole, and none of the shirts came our way.   :'(

My computer has been in the hospital until last night, so this is my first chance to reply.

We had a great time Opening Day--arrived about 9 and left a little after 4.  The 12th is our Anniversary, so we got the buttons, the taffy, the brittle, the minicones, and the kettle corn.  All the citizens we met made a point of congratulating us.

Because of the dreary weather, the Pickers were inside, so we couldn't get into their early show; we got into the second one early, however.  They are in fine fettle--finishing up a new album--and there was not a dry eye in the house when Walt sang "Arlington."

I like the colors on the bunting and banners around the city.  Engine #76 was pulling the train after a long period of rejuvenation, and doing a great job.  Best whistle on the Silver Dollar Line.  It was fun to see the comedy/magic act, and my wife got pulled up on stage to be a helper for part of it.

The crowds were never really an inconvenience, and the only place we wanted to go but wasn't open was the Apple Store.  We had a wonderful time, didn't spend too much money (a necessity for us right now), and got the new season off to a great start.

Rain or no, we're planning to go this Saturday; it is our anniversary, so it's doubly special.

Safety Theater is never a good thing.  Every time some measure such as this is instituted, the Orcs win.

The checks on the 19th were laughable--delaying enerything while ensuring not an ounce of additional safety.

This trend is bad, and I hope it goes away, and quickly, too.  If it continues at SDC, I will have to rethink the season passes.

We headed out of the City about 5:30 on Saturday (12/19), and the line of cars waiting to get in stretched almost back to the 465 interchange, about the same length it had been around 11;30 when we arrived that morning.

Looks like the wife and I will be able to hit the city this weekend, and, fo the first time this year, we'll have the boys with us.  (Real shame about that, but schedules are usually out of our hands.)

We'll get to the Classic late Friday night, and we'll only be able to stay the one night.

We have an October visit planned with my brother and his wife and one of their grand-daughters.  I am looking forward to that!

Do not be so quick to judge the people riding in those carts.  It may be that the ones who are overwieght are riding for a different reason.

My wife--like I am--is overweight, but that is not the reason that she has ridden in the electric carts, at the City and Walmart, too.  She has ridden because of her artificial hip--she is on the third revision of it--the result of a Giant Cell bone tumor that ate her pelvis and femural head when she was 28 years old.  Now at 44, it looks like loosening of the hardware is pointing her at yet another revision.  That means she'll have to ride the carts again for a while.

The last time, she got some dirty looks and snide, under-the-breath remarks about riding them just because she was fat.  'Fraid not, folks.

Next time you see someone on those carts, think twice before assuming WHY they are using the carts.  "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."  And:  "As ye have done it unto the least of these, so ye have done it unto me."

Odd day yesterday!  No rain at the city, but nearby lightning shut down the rides twice.  Naturally, we were waiting for the train both times :-/

The second time, the situation got to be quite extraordinary!  When the rain finally let up, the train remained on hold because the brakes were apparently hanging up.  Some guys from maintenance came and set things to rights (or so they thought).  After a further delay, we were boarded and on our way.

Just as we got to the backside of the robbers' cabin, the train began to slow.  Somehow or another, #43 dropped her fire, and boiler pressure plummeted.  The engineer managed to relight the fire and built up pressure, but the brakes were hanging up again.  The guys from maintenance had to walk all the way out there to make more adjustments.

While we were waiting, Alfie and Ralphie went ahead an robbed the train, explaining that they had intended to delay us by blowing up the tunnel, but this was much more convenient.  Ralphie offered to push the train with his horse.

The crew took us straight back to the depot with no stop at the cabin (Alphie was hanging out of the outhouse to salute us as we went by).  Total trip time was about 50-55 minutes, and it was less than an hour before closing when we detrained.  We noted that the depot was closed up right afterwards, but the gal in the FM said something about them intending to bring out another train, which, if true, I found to be a little silly:  one ride in a park whose attendance was rapidly declining (heading out for FW on the lake) seemed a bit of a waste.  Don't know if they actually brought one out or not.

Throughout, the very young crew handled things very well, keeping us informed and entertained.  All in all, it was an unusual adventure that was, fortunately, in no way troublesome (to us--can't say about the other passengers, but there was no grumbling in Car 3).

About 10,000 in the city:  not bad for 7/3 with predictions of rain and the appeal of the lake just down the road.

Alas, we couldn't get a room for Friday night, so we can't stay past tonight.

Thanks, Swoosh.  I guess there aren't/weren't any at the City.  Not surprising to me that my memory is faulty  :-[
