General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: 2022 Crowds / Trip Reports
« on: November 03, 2022, 08:37:35 AM »
To say "they've stopped caring a long time ago" is a complete insult to the citizens who have put a lot of time and effort to making SDC a national destination.

I don't think it's a reflection of the citizens at all. In fact, I would argue that it's the long-time citizens that's kept up the atmosphere as much as it has been. To me, it's more of a top-down issue. In the same way that Mary Herschend set the culture at the beginning, current management is responsible for setting the culture now. Current culture says it's OK to have giant light up Coke coolers in the General Store and play pop music during the day over the speakers. Honestly, there's only a handful of us obnoxious purists who see it as a problem. Most people probably don't even notice. Heck...my wife and kids don't see it as a problem. But then again, they've not been coming to the park since the 70's like I have.

That being said, it is still a special place, especially when compared to other theme parks. I plan to keep coming back and obsessing over the details that no one else notices.  :)

It's just a theme park now. No point in even mentioning the "theme breaks" any more. They stopped caring a long time ago. It's a lost cause. Most people will never know the SDC we grew up with when that was a scandal and you were really supposed to be stepping back in time. I mean, the park is covered in roller coasters now anyway...

On Saturday around noon, I saw a citizen walking down the path toward the glass blowing shop carrying several Dominos Pizza boxes. It was a bit of a shock. What would Miss Mary say to that!?

I was in the City over the weekend.

The good things I saw:
1. Despite changes here and there, the atmosphere continues to be second-to-none.
2. It was great to see our old friends such as Terry Sanders, the Schrock family making sorghum, Pat McCarty the blacksmith, Doug Bratcher the cooper, Buck Taylor, the Homestead Pickers and many others.
3. They have new hand-blown glass bell Christmas tree ornaments in the glass blowing shop!
4. Fire in the Hole and the Flooded Mine were in great condition.
5. Hillary Klug the fiddling buck dancer is great!
6. The molasses cookies in the bakery are back!
7. Still feels like home.

The negative things I saw:
1. Modern music in the park remains the bane of my existence. Unnecessary and a complete head-scratcher.
2. The new, lighted refrigerated cases in the General Store make me sad. In a few more years, I expect it to make the full transition into a Dollar General (only halfway joking).  :(

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Train Crash?
« on: October 27, 2022, 10:59:08 AM »
The train isn't a "must ride" for me, but the mere presence of it adds so much to the atmosphere. I am headed to the park this weekend, and the thought of not hearing the whistle and seeing the train go by breaks my heart. I can't imagine SDC without it. Hopefully it's back up and running again in 2023.

The clientele seems to be changing as of late, so this is of no surprise to me.

As the park changes, so goes the clientele. Six Flags-type parks attract Six Flags-type customers.

That facade seems to be more “modern” or “city-like” than the current one at FiTH.

I thought the same thing. But hey...it's the 21st century. A 19th century theme park is so 20th century.  ;D

Well I hope they turn the waterfall back on before I visit next month. That's my favorite place in the park to eat!

Can you still get to the dining area overlooking the waterfall? Since the old BBQ place by Lost River of the Ozarks was demolished, that has become our favorite place to eat and our default family meeting place.

Also, I wonder if they moved the boulder with the plaque honoring Pete and Jack Herschend? It used to be in the area that would be behind the fence now.

"Trees, overgrowth and switchbacks have been removed..."

Sigh...more trees removed.  :(

My family visits both Holiday World and SDC regularly. I won't ride the wooden coasters at Holiday World. They kill me. Way too rough. Outlaw Run is a walk in the park compared to the wooden coasters at Holiday World. I enjoy riding on Outlaw Run every time I come to the city.

I would love to have that box from Powderkeg, but I'm not going to drive six hours and stand around for three days to get it.  ;D

Maybe it will wind up on ebay.

I agree about the song...it must stay. It's as important as poor Red Flanders' britches.

43
If they include the Red Flanders gag as a nod to the original, I'll consider it a win.

I've never been able to get a feel for how much furniture they actually sold. My wife and I loved to look, but never bought anything. I'm guessing our experience was pretty common. Demonstrations aside, did the store do enough business to justify rebuilding it?

I've seen several memes and stories on Facebook crediting Dolly Parton for this and only mentioning Dollywood. Don't get me wrong...I love Dolly. But I can't help but wonder if it's galling to Herschend Family Entertainment for Dolly getting all the credit?
