SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: Balloon Chase
« on: May 08, 2012, 06:50:28 PM »
Other than the coasters, Grand Exposition is my kids favorite. There's a lot to do so when my Mother and Wife want to hit the shops, I can take them there and it's much easier to watch two to the closeness of the rides. GE was a great addition. the part of SDC that stands out the most to me is Splash Harbor. They can take that out anytime they want. Besides water play areas have come a long way since that was added.

I would like for the balloons to come back too, have patience.

Go to the Magic Springs Website and check it out. The park changed ownership a few years ago, and basically they freshened everything up and added a bunch of new stuff to the park, including a water park. They also hold concerts from time to time. If you have never been to Hot Springs, it's worth a trip...go to the theme park, hit downtown which is a historic district with lots of shops, restaurants, and where Hot Springs National Park is headquartered, there is a wax museum, and more. Plus, Lake Hamilton is right there, and there is a shopping mall, and a big observation tower above downtown. A good day or two of fun in Hot Springs.

My hope and desire is to see Hot Springs flourish. I wish that they would allow casino gaming as an incentive for renovation of the old hotels. I don't quite understand why Oaklawn and Southland  only have the electronic gaming and not those hotels. It would really add a shot of juice to the downtown. Remember..... those hotels were built on gambling in the first place. Season passes to Magic Springs is cheap cheap cheap. It's too bad their season doesn't overlap Oaklawn's live racing more. Don't miss Garavan Gardens if you like the flowers and plants.

Their woodie was relocated from what was last known as Boardwalk and Baseball in Florida. I've rode it at both places. The mine train was once one of the twin mine coasters at Six Flags St. Louis. If Hershend doesn't come up with some use for OzCat, this would be a good place. I've read they had some their largest attendance days ever last year with the solid lineup they put in the amphitheatre. They usually have a diverse lineup that'll range from soul to Christian rock every year.

Doesn't look like anyone took photos this weekend that I've seen yet, but I did hear that the lift is now noticeably taller than PK's overbank as of last Thursday.

It's definitely going to be a killer drop. Awesome job on that topo-overlay cowboy. I'm surprised I didn't think to do that myself, seeing as I'm a CivE student and I just got done doing a final project that involved building a topographic overlay of a job site.

I remember being a marketing major with two CivE major roommates. I had much more fun ;D

I maybe going to the City two Sundays from now, if a picture hasn't surfaced by then, I'll try to get one.

Would it be possible to reintroduce a small circuit of the hand powered rail cars in there?

They could have put a little more into the play structure and it's missin' a very small flat ride. I get what they went for, a place that's really meant for  a very small age segment like 3 to 6.

Eureka Shops went the way of chinese imports and suffered. How many places do you need to sell repo tin signs or Eureka Springs t-shirts. With 65 and 412 slowly becoming 4 lanes Eureka becomes more and more out of the way of everyone.

I love Wilson and Wilson. Blakely has sold me about a half dozen prints over the years and I have several carvings. I believe some of you long time SDCers remember when they were at SDC.  Blakely's business always seems to be thriving and she absolutly still cleans up at War Eagle.

Drove past Dinosaur World this weekend. They have cleared the debris from the old gift shop building, except for a pile of what appears to be concrete blocks. The park is overgrown, the lake looks stagnant, and I don't think I'd cross the footbridge over it now...looks a bit unsafe. I think if you wanted to walk or drive on the property you could probably do it, but there is a big sign at the entrance that says no tresspassing, so do so at your own risk. The figures look none the worse for wear from a distance, but probably could use some paint. If you have about $200,000 cash on hand,  you can buy the place. But it would probably take another $150,000 to get things up to par to open to the public again. Sorry, no pictures.

Bad location for any type of expense like that.

Don't count on it.  I would expect all of the lines will be longer

So, are you saying this ride will pull in folks that otherwise wouldn't bother with the park? You see the drawing power lasting once the introductory season is done. They are going to need some smaller stuff to help disperse the crowd a bit. How bout my themed out, tricked out Mack Spinner. ;D

Seems the City has convinced itself that rides will maintain the viability of the Park in the future. I know lots of folks here in NWA getting season passes for the first time this year and no one I've talked to dropped them either. Planners in NWA expect that the population to grow another 20 to 30 percent by 2030. That's basically SDC's backyard.

NO FERRIS WHEEL!!! ICK!!! GAG!!! I am serious. I hate those things.

I hate them too! I'm afraid of heights, so that's why I hate them. As long as I keep moving, like rollercoasters and stuff I'm fine, but as soon as I get stopped at the top, that's it for me!! No thank you!

I suppose the fact that I was in a cessna when dad would do stalls for fun prepared me for bout any ride. Later on, the Gs we would pull in his Agcat was fun too. I remember my first big ferris wheel at the worlds fair in Knoxville Tn.

Maybe they'll have somewhere near the new coaster for the balloons.

The things in the original concept art of Wilson's Farm and what ended up there are different. I also remember that the survey had the swings at where the waterboggin was. I still think a new spinning coaster with indoor/dark elements with outdoor sections with a small tunnel section would rock. And it would fit perfect right there. Maybe some sort of water element. Take a neat feature of some of newer themed ones and make a super one with all those included.

I think its kinda tacky....I would not want that to reside at the city...

I agree with Trams. It looks a bit tacky to me. Besides, wagons are sooo impractical in these hills! ;D

It was more of an example, I'm sure the City could come up with a more fitting theme,

Hey, say how about one with balloons:

And with the effect and animatronics out there, I'd want something much more for a new Diving Bell attraction that should happen one day soon. It's only right.
