General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: SDC Sets Attendance Record

Wilderness doesn't qualify it as one?

That's a bit of a stretch in my opinion. They've never used Wilderness in advertising to call SDC a resort, and other major theme park destinations do not use campgrounds to designate their properties as resorts.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / SDC Sets Attendance Record

http://www.ky3.com/content/news/Silver-Dollar-City-rings-in-new-year-with-2017-attendance-record-467731443.html

SDC had more visitors in 2017 than in its entire 58 year history. I found two things very interesting in this article. The fact that almost 25% of the visitors for the ENTIRE year came in November-December for the Christmas festival is amazing. I think we can all say that Christmas in Midtown was a resounding success. The other thing from the article I found very interesting is the quote from Brad Thomas. He calls SDC a resort destination. I find it interesting because SDC is not currently a resort, but I find it telling that he uses the word to describe it. I wonder just how close we are to seeing SDC become a true resort with a hotel onsite.

Thanks for the photos Swoosh. It's on my bucket list to visit WDW during the Christmas season.

Construction/Rumors / Re: Future SDC Development Speculation (Long-term)
« on: December 06, 2017, 07:32:56 PM »
This is a dangerous area. We all know that SDC is so special and successful because of its unique charm. If they continue to chip away at the unique charm to accommodate larger crowds, then they risk the very thing that the crowds are coming to see. It's possible to expand yourself out of business. I'm not saying that SDC is at risk of going out of business, but they do have to take care to maintain what makes the City special.

They could also raise admission prices to help control the crowds.....and/or go to a variable rate pricing like the big boys to capitalize on the high demand days.  Think I've posted on here before about my prediction that that will be coming.  Especially if the crowd levels continue to grow.  SDC to me only feels like the"good old SDC" when I get to go on the slower days.

I don't think this type of tiered pricing system would work at SDC simply because a vast majority of those who visit the park are season pass holders. The tiered pricing works at places like Disney and Universal because not near as many visitors to those parks are season pass holders, but rather park hopper pass holders.

While I recognize that SDC has some major problem areas that get congested, I have also been to the WWoHP at Universal Orlando, and both of the HP lands there feel just as cramped, if not moreso everyday as SDC does on its busiest days. I'm just saying that since SDC is becoming a major player in the theme park business, they can learn from the other major players in regards to crowd control and keeping the same charm.

Personally, I love the wassail. Last Christmas I bought the hot chocolate and it was very watered down and disappointing, I did not buy it this year, however.

I haven't reviewed Christmas in Midtown yet because I haven't had time. We were at the park the weekend before Thanksgiving, and wow. I was very very impressed. I didn't notice pop music because the area was so crowded and so many people were talking and oohing/ahhing so the music kind of got drowned out. I think SDC really did a top notch job with this new addition. When you exit Midtown onto the square now though, all lights there really feel kind of dull, even the ones on the tree. I think fixing up the square with a new tree for next year's festival should be a new priority for SDC.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: New Year's Eve

I love that they are open on New Year's Eve and day this year. However, it doesn't make much sense to close at 10 PM on New Year's Eve. Why not actually ring in the new year and be open a little past midnight?

So, I'm not completely understanding the "controlled spin".  Assuming this means that the spin is controlled but it is computer controlled through the ride and not the rider?

It is controlled by the mechanics of the ride through magnets. The rider controls nothing.

I hope we get more theming than was presented in the video. And while it won't effect me, I do think SDC will face an uphill battle in marketing to people who do not like spinning. I think the controlled spin will definitely help and the animation didn't look out of control to me. It just looks more like a turning motion than spinning. I think everyone should give it a chance before immediately shooting it down.

This looks like a great addition to the park and will offer something completely different from anything they have. I can't wait for 2018 to come to enjoy this amazing new addition. Three inversions, two launches, that first drop! Looks crazy and fun to me!

The animation doesn't show any spinning at all beyond the inversions. It just shows a traditional rider POV.

You can see the spinning in the animation. I wasn't just talking about the POV.

Are you kidding me?  Why would you cover the natural scenery of this ride up with some VR glasses?

I never said that I wanted it to happen. I was just speculating as to whether or not it would happen. I don't think it will I was just throwing out some further speculation.

Wow, this looks incredible. I don't know why it just occurred to me but does anyone think there is any chance SDC avoids having to do a ton of theming by going the route of virtual reality? A lot of coasters are doing that these days.

It would allow them to blast us to whatever time period they wanted and there could be multiple variations of the ride. However, if this thing does spin and have virtual reality then that could make a lot of people very nauseous.

How about we all just wait for the announcement and let SDC be the ones to present their new creation to us as they wanted it to be presented. Good things come to those who wait!
