Title: Christmas/Main Street
Post by: Copper on September 28, 2007, 11:13:32 PM
I don't know if this has been posted yet, but if not, enjoy!
Main Street will be covered with 720,000 lights. Guests will be literally surrounded by the spirit of Christmas.

-5 story main Christmas Tree- redecorated and redesigned

-Approximately 250,000  lights on main tree

-230 cut Blue Spruce trees fill the Town Square planters

-Approximately 250,000  on Blue Spruce Trees

-Approximately 250,000  lights on Main Street Buildings

-The building facades, the cut trees, the festoon lights, as well as the up lit trees, will all be a part of the new "show" that the "5five story tree" performs

The tree will be programmed to six different songs:

-Carol of the Bells (David Foster: The Christmas Album)

-Interlude (Steven Curtis Chapman: The Music of Christmas)

-Joy to the World (Boston Pops Orchestra: Sleigh Ride)

-Suite from Polar Express (Polar Express Motion Picture Soundtrack)

-Sleigh Ride (Boston Pops Orchestra: Sleigh Ride)

It sounds incredible, albeit I'm pretty sure some of those songs are pretty cheesy. Still, this should be one of the best light shows anywhere, and I'm definitely looking forward to it. My only wonder at this point is how the Christmas tree will turn out. I hope it looks something like what it did before, or at least has some decorations. Last I saw it was just a big cone coated with lights.

Yeah, Conductor Sam posted about this on the blog; said the addition cost $1 million and includes 1 million lights on the Main Street Square alone.

My thoughts on the music choices (based on samples heard on iTunes):

Carol of the Bells (David Foster): This is the song that's been used for many years with the tree and I've always loved this very upbeat version of the Christmas classic.

Interlude (Steven Curtis Chapman): Listening to the MP3 on the blog, this sounds like a great piece that is fun and fast enough to make for a great lighting sychronization.

Joy to the World (Boston Pops): Being Boston Pops, this is a nice, fast orchestral version of the song that will lend well to the lighting synchronization.

Medley (Michael W. Smith): I don't know WHICH medley this is, as there are three on the album--Conductor Sam didn't specify which one. From the samples on iTunes, the third medley (featuring an upbeat Celtic-sounding version of "I Saw Three Ships") sounds the most upbeat and therefore seems to fit in more with the style of the lighting show.

Suite from Polar Express (Alan Silvestri): I LOVED that movie; I think I saw it two or three times in the theaters. This piece is a great sampling of all the wonderful, fun music in the movie and should be great to see used with the lights.

Sleigh Ride (Boston Pops): Your classic rendition, and being that it's traditionally a pretty upbeat song, this should work well, too.

So, all in all, I think we've got a GREAT selection of music, some wonderful lights, and an all-around AWESOME show to look forward to! I'm so excited!!!

They were suppose to have a bigger better tree then the five story, but no one could come up with a better tree, so they ended up just putting better lights on the same tree. You shouldn’t be too disappointed. Just goes to show SDC is better then most!

Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith are both awesome Christian artists. If you guys haven't listened to any of their stuff I request it.

Anyways, I hope I can make it down for the festival but I don't think I'll be able to. Joy will have to record a video for me or something.  :D

I got to see Steven Curtis Chapman in concert with Mercy Me a couple years ago around Christmas-time (they promoted Chronicles of Narnia at the concert), and it was wonderful.

If I can make it to SDC for Christmas, I will DEFINITELY be recording video. I might have to buy me another camcorder battery, since the one that came with the camera can't go long anymore without needing a charge. I'll take plenty of tapes with me; I'd like to get all six songs on the tree on video.

To tide everyone over, though, I'm working on making a Christmas video that I hope to have finished soon.

Anyone one know if the parade is getting anything new this year? They usually seem to add a float or two per year.

I don't know anything specific about the parade, but Conductor Sam did say in his comment to me on the blog that he'd be talking about the parade soon.
