Title: 2019 Daily Attendance
Post by: sanddunerider on March 17, 2019, 08:46:07 AM
Opening saturday, nice weather.

Pictures show that the park is looking great and everything has that fresh new look and smell..

Saturday,  13,500,,,

Nice start..  I actually expected a bigger number.,  But still a respectable number..

In fact, I like the extra space, due to my fat american body. :D

I’m glad we went Wednesday.  It was cold and most guests left early.  Time Traveller was a 10 minute wait by 4 pm.

I hear it’s much busier today.

19k on Weds????  Are you serious?  That's a Christmas or holiday weekend number!! That's insane.

I know it was really busy today.  We left around 1:30 and there were still full trams of people coming in.  Not a weekend to be at the park with the crowds.

Ok, that makes a little more sense.  But that's still an incredibly, hugely ridiculous number for a Thursday.  But seeing that number I'm happy we left when we did today.  It was definitely feeling that way.

They're sure getting off to a great start number wise.

God Bless those Spring Breakers, I have been at the park during Christmas with 25,000 and it was gridlock, almost unbearable.  At Christmas there are more open than the spring.  With these numbers is it not time for SDC to act like they are as busy as they are?  Maybe its time to open the park fully with these kinds of crowds, the money is there.     The crowds last year were also bumper crop, is it not appropriate and prudent to give these paying folks at least the entertainment of standard season when the numbers are this high ?  Open the shops and restaurants.  Have mercy on the adults.

I am NC ARK and we had rain today.  I wonder how it was there?

What were summer days averaging last year Sandunerider?  Do you remember?
Seems like 20+ at Christmas with any decent weather at all (drastically effected by cold weather) but I didn't watch the summer months.  I would love to keep track and watch the patterns.  EZ spreadsheet with weather included so you can see its effect.

This was also Spring Break Week in the area and I am sure that contributed to the crowds.

It's rained here most of the day as well.  I'm sure that's why the numbers were down.  Actually, for it being a rainy day, 11,300 is still a pretty big number.

It didn’t start raining today until just before 3 pm.  Time Traveler went from a 100 minute wait to a walkon pretty quick.  The kids rode it 5 times in about 30 minutes at around 4:30.  All the big rides except for Powder Keg stayed open.

I'm confused. The 2018 thread is about discussing Branson's overall 2018 attendance numbers; this one is specifically about SDC's daily attendance in 2019... Aren't those two separate topics?

Might be suffering the "Nobody goes any more because it's too crowded" syndrome. There were a ton of warnings of how crowded and how unruly the young crowd is......might be keeping a lot of the "locals" from attending that weekend.

You may be correct Jay.  If that is happening, An they can prove that that "crowd" is hurting the ateendence, the PTB may want to rethink that whole weekend

It would have been a great weekend to go. Why didn’t we go?  Ycw. We made that mistake one time. They didn’t care that my kids were 5. They cut in front of them anyway to ride the kiddie coaster. Now we avoid this weekend because I don’t want to deal with that.

I dont dare attend this weekend.

I'm actually surprised the numbers are that low as well.  I pretty much won't go YCW myself, even though I'd like to see some of the acts, because I don't like dealing with the crowds.  It was a mixed bag when I worked there- there were some great people, but also a lot of pain in the necks, and it seemed most of the park employees felt about the same- the bad outweighing the good.

But I doubt that you'll see them change up.  The acts this year weren't as big a name as ones they've had the past few years, and I know several of the regular contributors weren't there (e.g. Kanakuk camps/ Joe White) which might have had an impact, as well as the weather forecasts for Saturday in particular not sounding good until Saturday itself- I'm guessing that many that would have gone made other plans instead.

Now if they run into that 3-4 years in a row without any good explanation other than public perception of the crowd, then they might start to rethink it a little bit.  But I doubt after one year that was off a bit.

Agreed,
it would have to happen for multiple years in a row.  Which is the correct way to do it.  You cant let 1 "odd" year decide things like that,,

He was on the schedule for Sunday morning.

We went to the park on Sunday and had a great day. Short lines and we only saw about 3 people cut the line all day. No problems with any kids at all.

I did notice that they had a special to upgrade the 2-Day YCW ticket to a season pass for only $35. When we walked by there was a line of kids upgrading.

It's possible that the reputation has finally preceded it. Plus the weather...

But that's a pretty huge drop for an event that almost always packs out the park. I wonder if something fundamentally shifted. Did the price increase much? Did some of the churches have a complaint about something?

All possibilities,

I dont have anyway of verifying how many were YCW affiliated, Or everyday visitors.

It was for sure a very low number, for both sat and sun.

You're right, my mistake.  I've a good friend in town who works with Joe who is always out there with him, and who made a post that he was missing it this year, so i figured Joe wasn't there either.  I was wrong on that.

I talked to a few of my "church friends" and youth leaders, and several said that there just wasn't a lot of interest this year.  I think it really came down to it feeling, for some of them or the kids at least, like it was the same old, same old, with nothing "new" or a big name to draw them.  There wasn't an artist/ group this year that would be more than middle of the show at best with Winterjam, not like in the past when they've had Skillet, Lauren Daigle or some of the others.

So at this point that would be my best guest- an uninspiring lineup and a desire for something new.

So while eating at the Mine today I mentioned how it was slow and she said they had figured the mine/mill would be slow because everyone would be down at the barn for the festival foods.  She said that and the rain kept people away today.  I told her I like coming when its going to rain then said something about I heard last weekend was slow for YCW.  She said it was way slower than they had planned.  She said many of the regulars have told her they stay away that weekend so maybe our theory is correct.

Yes, it was downright pleasant yesterday except for the trip being ruined over losing my phone.  I am going back today to hopefully retrieve my phone.  Looks like the rain is about done up here now but it is still cold and wet so I bet it is slow today as well.

It was absolutely wonderful today from a guest's perspective.  Crowds were light. Time Traveler was about a 10 minute wait, train was running every 30 minutes with plenty of room left on each one.  Outlaw Run, Flooded Mine, and TNT were walk ons.  Looked like much of FL was as well when we walked by.  And lots of seats left in the couple of shows we attended.

When we got there just after noon the wet was long gone and cleared out.  Turned into a beautiful day.
But what little wet there was I'm sure contributed to those numbers being low.

Hopefully, people aren't planning on this Sunday since they are closed for Easter. We've almost made that mistake before, but luckily we checked the hours before heading out. We know a few people that have actually driven to the park and then realized that they were closed.

That AND it was a Sunday, AND school is still in session..   Along with I am sure people are planning on trips next weekend, rather than this weekend..

Good Point.!!  Glad you mentioned it.!
I am sure there are several carloads drive out there to visit and figure out that the City is closed..

When I was a young lad my Mom took us to the city on this "plan"  It was really disappointing to pull in and see that its not just slow, its empty!  We learned to enjoy what was in Branson and had a good time going to all the places we had noticed and wondered about.   Your day is what you make of it.  Many of the stores in Branson will be open, I saw signs this past week.  Many however will be closed as they had signs up as well.

Happy Easter Members!

We were there. In general lines were quite long. But we were able to see the shows we wanted to see by giving up rides. The temp was good but the wind was quite chilly.

They were only budgeting for 6K people on Friday and they got 12k.  I get that the previous 2 days were dead but it seems like they get caught off guard a lot when budgeting for holiday weekend traffic.

Title: Re: 2019 Daily Attendance
Post by: palallin on May 06, 2019, 08:35:40 AM
Not really a madhouse.  The morning, as a matter of fact, was quite nice.  The crowds didn't start really building till after 11.  We left before 4, and people were still coming in, so I do not doubt things got really tight.

In addition to Mercy, there were still several choirs there (reminding me of my own choir trips there, oh! so many years ago).  As for behavior, the choir kids were angels compared to the Mercy adults.  They seem to believe that the city is their own personal property that day, and they cut in line, block traffic, push past, and otherwise dominate the area, even when the crowds are light (as was the case in the morning).  Mercy really needs to reflect on the image their people are giving of their institution.

We made a unscheduled trip yesterday with the Texas grandkids.  Not much of a crowd which was very nice getting around the park.  It was a nice cloudy 58 degrees and no wind.  This was our first time to visit in about 2 years.  These are a few of the things I noticed:  People smoking at the Park in several areas.  A couple of the BBQ Fest vendors were not very polite working with people.  The cave guide was excellent and made kids feel welcomed.  The ride operator in the Mine separated our family members on the boats.  There was no one in line.  Very strange.  They sold out of chocolate strawberries at 5pm.  If you are going to stay open until 7:00 you should have enough to get through the day.  The lady said they sell out everyday at 5:00.  The park was trash free.  The bathrooms continue to need a lot of cleaning.  Shuttles not running very quickly. We spent an hour waiting on trams to get in and get back.  On the bus tram you couldn’t hear the driver address the crowd.  No microphone or speaker system.  Disappointed in many things on our visit.  I always get season tickets, but hope my visits later in the year improve.

That is not too bad.  If we would have got there at opening we probably would have rode more rides.  It was not super busy by the time we left at 3 but as mentioned on another thread we skipped many because the lines were longer than we wanted to wait and they were only running 1 train on most.

Wonder if they're having some sort of issue.  I had to drive past the entrance this morning on my way to Branson, going the opposite way of the traffic going into the park, and it was backed up past Shepherd of the Hills.  I was very happy I wasn't waiting in that line

We were there today arrived before opening.  Left at noon after watching the swashbuckling show, when that let out it seemed really busy so we left.  Lots of rides were down including PK and the train.

The final count for today was 7972

Branson is popping tonight. Almost every hotel showing no vacancy signs... SDC didn't even fill up lot 3 when I was there (left about 7ish)...

I guess people really like lights. I hope the pumpkin nights are a smash hit, because it feels like a sluggish year for the park so far. Rain hasn't helped, but you can only blame so much on the weather.

The strip is really lively tonight. As others have said, Track 4 is basically Celebration City 2.0

Yup, yesterday was busy! I wondered how crowded it might be but we decided to try it for a few hours because we wanted a sarsaparilla! Some things were surprising - the swashbuckling play at the Opera House was only about half full until a minute before it started.  It became "mostly filled". Mass exit near 5:00, so maybe not as crowded later on for moonlight madness.

Well keep in mind, all 19,000 were not there at one time..
When I checked in at 6, 7,000 people had already left the park, so actually there were about at 8,000 on park at 6...
that being said,
with the reported last number, approx. 4,000 entered after 6..
so>
in theory about 12,000 people on park from 6- close.
Thats not allowing for anyone else leaving, and you know they did.

Sounds like a perfect day, with extended hours..

Hope you had a good visit,  sure sounds ideal.

How would they know how many people left the park and when?  The tickets are not scanned out when leaving so curious how they come up with an exit figure.

I am sure it is "quesstimate,
But going out, you do go through the turnstiles....
so that would give them an estimate...

Yes the estimate is probably pretty close, but a lot of people sidestep the turnstiles and go around them.  That might make up for the kids and some adults spinning them for the desired effect  ;)

It’s the weekend for “guilt trips” - I avoid the first weekends of August like the plague at any park due to the “guilt trippers”

For those not in the education world, a “guilt trip” is when the parents realize that school starts in a week or so and then they (the parents) feel guilty for doing less than jack squat with their kids all summer.  So they take a last minute trip to the local amusement park to try to make up for it.  You might notice how the town is packed right now and hotel rooms are scarce, that’s why.  It happens every year.  It’s also not just something that happens here.  Parks across the country were slammed yesterday.

In other news, today will be the last regular attendance report from me.  I’m heading back to school next week and my posting will be quite limited through marching season as usual.  If Sand wants to take up the slack that’s fine but Swoosh is done for now.

Well sort of.  Looks like we will be up there next weekend, the 24th etc.  I will also be up there tomorrow and leaving Friday for work.  I may get up to the city for a couple of hours before closing tomorrow and probably till noon Friday.

I am in town but good thing I looked because I discovered they are closed today. I would have felt like it was a visit to Wally World.   I will be "working" in town tomorrow so I will head up at opening and get some rides in before heading back home.

I ended up skipping going up to the city today.  It started raining when I was getting ready to head up there and looked like it was going to last a while.  I only wanted to stay a couple of hours so I just headed back home.  I will be back up next weekend but I suspect it will be busier.

I know no one has a crystal ball, but how busy is Labor Day usually?  Looking at going the 2nd of September, but was wondering if that is a crazy day traditionally?  Maybe people heading back from mini vacation on the second and a little less crowded?

I've not experienced a visit there yet this summer that was as crowded as last year.  But, the lake is crazy!  So many boats and the newest kid on the block - wake boats! My boat used to look fairly good sized in a rental slip, and the last year I rented space it was a minnow.  I now have a long term lease at a marina, and there's a waiting list for those wanting in.  I wonder if there's a migration towards other types of entertainment rather than a theme park.

Personally for me after being a theme park junkie for a long time I am gravitating to other forms of entertainment. Concerts, Trips abroad , National parks, Hiking and the mountains peak my interest more than a manufactured environment. Lots of people in my family who visit SDC several times a year have only been 1 time this year. They are also reevaluating their yearly Christmas trip.  I have not been 1 time this year yet and will probably pass till 2020.

I am doing the same, no trips yet and none planned.  I may purchase a season pass next year again, I will see what is on the schedule.  I think that TT has been a success but I think closing a part of the park is a hard thing for them to overcome.  Disney has mass and with the number of attractions they can get away with this move but SDC maybe no so much.  I am looking forward to the Pumpkin/Halloween festival they are starting this year, I wonder what kind of boost it will give to the numbers.  Halloween is a huge draw for other parks, SDC seems to be trying to keep Halloween out of it but I see by the decor previews it is definitely peeking though. ( Spiders, Black Cats) My bet is they will stop being afraid of it if the money starts rolling in.

We went quite a bit in Spring.  Summer has not been possible because of schedule and funds (a trip costs a great deal more than just the ticket, especially as we have passes).  We're hoping to make it at least three more times this year.

I used to buy season tickets basically every other year for SDC.  Since TT opened I've only been twice and both times I didn't pay for tickets (bring a friend with another season holder family and as my parents treat for my us).

I don't think it was TT that caused me/us to stop buying as much as its been my family has wanted to do other things with our money.  We bought Six Flags tix last year and hit up 3 parks with them over 3 different weekend trips through the year.....we did a cruise 2 years ago.....and this year we did a couple Orlando parks and a week on the beach in FL.

We are prepping for trip #10 of the year. We’ve only hit one truly crazy busy day. Should hit 15 trips before the end of the year, probably more. Since we only live an hour and a half away, it’s just a day trip for us. The kids are older now and we are really get our use out of the passes.

I believe the first year it opened (last year) was a record attendance for the park.  So I am sure Time Traveler had a little something to do with it.  I have a feeling this year is a little down from going to the park and seeing attendance totals.  It just seems they have got a lot of rain this year on days such as the weekends that they would have gotten good attendance.  I do believe the new Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Nights is going to be a big attendance draw and make up for any lost attendance.  Anything new at SDC especially a new ride is going to draw a decent crowd for awhile, and TT falls into that category.  Is Time Traveler a bust......Time will tell!

Marine Dictionary:
Boat:  Noun.  A hole in the water into which the owner pours money.  The best two days of boat ownership are the day the owner buys it and the day the owner sells it.

I say these things as a guy who grew around boats and *really* wished he had time for them now.  Were I closer to the lake, I'd have one (not counting the ancient 12' V-bottom rowboat currently sitting next to my shop:  anybody want to acquire a 1957 7.5 hp Evinrude?).  I very much enjoy boating, but I just cannot indulge myself.

That said, it wouldn't take me away from the City.

And I would rather pay to go to SDC than be paid to go to Six Flags.   ;D

What are we thinking the crowds are gonna be like this weekend, numbers wise? Just saw SDC announced extended hours thru the weekend. https://www.facebook.com/events/918404168497598/

I might go. Was thinking Fri/Sat is an obvious no as naturally that would be their busiest days/nights. So I was thinking Sun/Mon maybe? Though I'm aware last Saturday was pretty nice with a manageable crowd but that could have been due to the threat of rain keeping crowds away.

It is labor day weekend,  with school in session, I would think Friday and Monday would both be low traffic days...  leaves with flip of the coin on saturday and sunday....

IMHO  saturday will be the busiest day...  Sunday will be above average even with extended hours, but people start going home sunday night/evening.

Have a great trip!!

Yes, these numbers look poor, over the weekend they "predicted" 4-5,000 more than what showed up..    Seems like there have been a lot of low attendence days this year.  NOT all weather related...  I agree, we need to see some huge days in the next 4 months...

Maybe Country Music Days aren't a big draw. We usually go in September but we really didn't want to go to any of the Saturday night concerts and didn't consider the daily entertainment to be a reason to visit, either, since we usually go to SDC on Thursday or Friday.

We were out there for about 3 hours Thursday.  That was as empty as I've seen the park in a long time.  We literally walked onto Time Traveler, which only had a half full train.  Only did it once as we would have had to walk all the way around and that's a long walk with all those stairs.  lol

Only places that really had any people were the shows.  Saloon was full, as well as the Pickers and the Dockside theater had a decent size crowd.  But everything else was just empty.

This is troubling. Big changes will come to the park if the numbers don't improve. It doesn't make sense to me that SDC is struggling while the six flags and cedar fair parks are surging. It's not like SDC is even that much more expensive, or has that fewer rides. I think the older generation that SDC has relied on to fill out it's numbers has finally moved on or been priced out. You guys aren't going to like what they will probably do to pander to the younger generations...

Really hope Pumpkin nights are a success.

Do we really know that these are unusual numbers?  This is the first time I've seen daily numbers like this on the forum.  I do know that September is the month of lowest revenue in retail and restaurant business; maybe that has always translated to tourism as well.

I took some time to look at September 2018 trip reports. How-do Folks said that on Friday the 14th the park was not busy at all. Sirwillow reported on the 15th that the park was "a bit on the crowded side but not overwhelming". Jemmicat went on the 16th and mentioned the traffic. Gilligan reported on the 19th that she was surprised at the number of people there on a Wednesday. On Sunday the 24th Okiebenz reported that the crowds were light and all the rides they rode were walk on but TT had a line.

Last year was the last year of the Cowboy Festival so there were extra activities and crafts during the day in September.  I don't think the entertainment during the day for Country Music Days was a big draw for people this year.

Yes, these are poor numbers... The PTB "expected" 4500 on thursday, and 5500 on friday, and actually only about 1/2 that many showed up.

This summers numbers just seem weak to me.. I dont have the "connection" to find out if numbers are up? down? or WAAYY down?.

Maybes someone else here can check with the PR dept and verify.. I would like to know..

We can only hope for a strong next 3 1/2 months,

I dont think their country music days drew the crowd they were looking for, however I do know the local artists that played have a good local following and several of the bransonites did come out to watch them..  the artists- Billy Yates, Eastern Heights, The  Missouri Ploughboys and Matt Gumm are all local that either are in shows in town, and in bands after hours or do both..    obviously the local names wont or probalby did not draw people from to far away, since their name wasnt reconized.   Although Billy Yates is a very well country artist local, nationally and worldwide..

A lot of the attendance issue can be blamed on the weather. It rained the entire summer. We have had double the average rain fall. Now summer has finally arrived and it’s too late for families to go. September is also a time they expect a lot of older people to be at the park and it has been too hot for them to go.

I think losing lost river impacted attendance. Only 2 water rides at the park makes lines long. Like an hour and a half to get on river blast long. I’ve never seen lines for the plunge as I did this year.

We have been 10 times this year. Every single time, at least one of the rollercoaster photo places has been closed. Rides have been down for hours at a time. They aren’t running to capacity and are only running one “train” on rides even with hour lines. For 2 months there were no bags for the ball pit, so kids we’re using their shirts to carry balls to the shooters. Food lines aren’t staffed correctly so lines are incredibly long.

It’s just been a rough year. Not one thing will affect attendance like this, but added together, they can make a big impact. Hopefully next year will be better.  But I plan on enjoying *some* shorter wait times and better parking spots while they are available.

Like I said in another post, they need more flats, complimentary and similarly themed to acccompany  the Big new ride. It eats lines.

We have reached peak employment it seems, there's plenty of jobs to be had locally here but the unemployment rate is static. SDC is a different beast, as theme parks have gone to longer and longer seasons, they need more help other than summer seasonal. It is not to be found. Even summer seasonal is more scarce as teens are working less and less. (A bad thing in my opinion, they learn no work ethic and are just being taught in schools to take tests).

I'm all for an expansion of visa programs for these type of jobs. Seems SDC did that route a bit more back before the Great Depression.

And the weather was horrific for weekend fun in the Ozarks this year.  It is nearly 80 degrees at 9:30am on a Sunday in late Sept right now.

Just sheer opinion, but I dont want more flat rides tarting it up. For me, SDC isnt about how many rides can be shoved onto the real estate. But then again, we do not go from mid June to Sept 1 because we dont like the crowds or heat.

The weather has been a bit much this year. Wet, wet, wet, then hot, hot, hot. Just not enjoyable.

Again, pure opinion, an issue I have with working at SDC is the pay. Its not worth it by the time you factor in all the bills you have plus if you should have day care costs. Its a true struggle. (I know its not a job for adults) On the other side of things I get that its a minimum wage job due to all the other costs SDC has. Quite the balance they have to strike.

The weather has been a major player this year for sure., and with the threat of rain today AND its Sunday, will be a low count again..

As far as their pay scale?
That doesnt have a thing to do with attendance, so if you want to "talk" about that,
please start a new thread.

Sat's number was a little over 10,000 people,

I did see on FB that the Echo Hollow Show had a full crowd, which is good

More than a full crowd at Echo for Sawyer Brown - they ran out of standing room!  Very good concert! Sawyer played longer than the usual concert there; about l 1/2 hrs.  Very cranky people that couldn't find seats. I'd say downright pissed off people! It was announced several times that peeps in seats needed to move in to allow for others, but there was no where to move.  I think they should've cut off people allowed to enter when they reached the max.  We got there about 3 hrs. before the concert, and the line was already up to Main St.

I'm fully on the....need more flat rides....opinion.

Can you imagine what the ride lines would be like through the rest of the park if the strip of GE flat rides where closed on a busy day?  3 or 4 more modern flats through the park would be a huge help on crazy busy days.

Not to mention I believe they seriously need another indoor attraction that can remain open during bad weather and cold weather.  The only 2 major rides open during rain and cold are the oldest ones in the park.  Beyond fixing/replacing them....may a indoor flat could be done?

Just need employees and money.

I'm not sure it's the rides - if rides were the draw, then SDC would be busier now than what is being experienced because people would hear that the lines would be short. The locals would be going because they know the crowd is small.

I think you'll see another big bump in attendance with the upcoming Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Nights upcoming. I know our family has been talking about this for a while and we love coming up during Oklahoma School's Fall Break. You'll see very big crowds the weekend on October 17, 18, 19th. We've talked about going the last couple of weeks, but because we want to go during Harvest Festival, the family decided to wait.

I'm very interested in Pumpkin Nights' attendance numbers. They've been hyping this all year on social media. I'm expecting it to do well and be a nice rebound from the slow summer SDC experienced.

Real quick because I don't have much internet, I went to the City tonight.  I have to say at first I was very underwhelmed.  There are lots and lots of pumpkins and some flowers not yet blooming, but little else - no gourds, cornstalks, colored leaves, flags, garlands, etc.  The walkway into the park and the square had a lot of pumpkins and some of the booths are set up with vendors.  Nothing like last year!  Hugo's Hill Street had nothing nor did Midtown.

Everything is focused on Valley Road and the Grand Expo area. We stuck around until dark for a glimpse ...and it came alive!  Pumpkins were lit and grouped in themes - flowers, animals, birds.  Even the carnival games and the rides had themed pumpkins.  There was a camping scene set up of glowing pumpkins with a campfire, animals, and a lantern.  Very cool!  The large displays of pumpkins forming a cat, spider, owl, etc. were cute.  The black light party must've started early because the music was playing, employees were everywhere dancing with the crowd, and the blow up dancing tube guys (what are they called?} was all in gear way before dark. When the lights came on, I'll admit it was very cool!  Not many people there at all when I showed up about 4:30, but there was a decent crowd coming in as we left. I've never seen so many employees roaming the park.  At first, it seemed as though there were as many employees as paying guests.  I'm assuming they expected more people.  Hubs and I really did enjoy it and will go back soon.  I do wish more of the park was decorated (not just a few areas) and with more than orange and white pumpkins.  Hubs commented as we walked out that none of the pumpkins had light from the square past Delilah's, and he thought they should so that people leave with the feeling of "Wow" as they exit the park.  I agree with him!  I'll try to post some photos tomorrow.

wed's numbers..   The PTB expected about 6000 people,    Actually had about 3300 show up for the first night..

I would expect that numbers to climb through the weekend, with a peak on sat night..  supposed to be nice weather and temps very decent..

I think this is where Dollywood has an advantage in that the main park pathway is a loop. Their LumiNights is basically the opposite of SDC's Pumpkin Nights in terms of where the main part of it is. In DW, the main loop of the park is decorated for LumiNights, so you see it pretty much everywhere, except over in the County Fair area (the DW version of Grand Expo). I imagine SDC will be running surveys and what-not to see what the guests liked most and least about Pumpkin Nights. This is the first year, so I know they're just dipping their toes in the water. Hopefully maybe next year they'll expand it. In fact, maybe that's their long-term plan - start small by keeping it just in the Expo area, then expand it into another area of the park the next year, so they can then advertise "Bigger, Brighter Pumpkin Nights!"

I'll post this on the trip reports thread as well.

We were at the park yesterday.  It was disappointing to see how many crafters were missing this year- much lower numbers and many of the favorites aren't there this time.  Which meant the square felt much lighter in numbers.

But the Pumpkin Nights was awesome.

We were there until about 7:30 and were very impressed by what they are offering for the new festival, and can't wait to see it grow.

And yes, crowds were pretty light.  Which means short lines for everything, and Echo Hollow being maybe 1/3 to 1/2 full.

The PTB need to make sure they dont loose the crafters, that has always been and will always be a good draw..(as long as they have crfaters there).   If they do away with them....  It will be a shame and the numbers will show it.

Anybody from here there tonight? how was it?

We were there Wednesday and tonight. Completely different experiences. The place was empty on Wednesday night. The riverfront area was almost creepy because no one else was in that part of the park and some of the lights were out so there were some dark parts of the path. Tonight there were people thought the park and more lights had been added to the darker areas since Wednesday.
The new Pumpkin Plaza was much better tonight with a crowd than on Wednesday. Surprisingly, the Owl Hollow wooded trail wasn’t super packed tonight. We were afraid that it would be really hard to see the pumpkins on it with much of a crowd.
The hill from the square to Grand Expo was very crowded all evening. Not Saturday Christmas crowded, but still crowded.
Even with the larger crowd tonight, we still did everything that we wanted to do and had a great time.

I think it's safe to say that the pumpkin nights will be greatly expanded next year, both in terms of scale and the length. I'll bet they start by mid-September at the latest. Keep in mind Disneyworld was already doing a trick-or-treat even in mid August when I was there.

Glad that they are getting some decent numbers again. This season looks like it has largely been a wash, but at least they always finish out strong. Hopefully next year will be much stronger.

I agree for sure, next year i would expect it to expand both in displays and goodies, as well as start earlier in the season..

I just hope, I really hope they put a little more emphasis on more crafters..
If they loose or do away with the crafter/craft season they will lose a whole demographic of people..
I for one, If there are no Crafts, and as previously mentioned they have done away with the "cowboy Festival", there would be no reason for me to visit in the fall.   After all The Fall Festival was a big deal, but apparantly it is going to the wayside, or in fact already gone :'(.. too bad.

Unless the PTB think by getting the kids in for the Pumpkin Nights Event, they will maybe not get more people, But in fact more poeple (kids and family) that will spend money on site for food and such..

My family will not attend the Pumpkin Nights deal. We love fall and pumpkins and all things of that nature. But we dont go to SDC for 20.00 bubble wands and to listen to hip cool dance music. It is just not us. I hope they do not get rid of the craft portion, its my fave.

Its great they are trying to draw in the youths. I think its great more memories are being made for others. Shoot when I was a youth they had Nickelodeon there during Kids Fest and that was amazing!! (NOT on brand, much like dance parties at PN) So I get it. They drew me in with shiny cool things. I am a life long visitor now because of the memories I made then.

Maybe next year they will expand the PN to include something besides black lights and dance parties?

I still love the craft/cowboy part better though. :)

I totally understand where you're coming from, but I would still say it's worth checking out. There's definitely a charm to everything that they've put together for this festival. Great attention to detail and fun atmosphere. The dance party is fairly well sequestered in the back of the park. It is definitely not at the center of everything and can be completely skipped if desired. I don't really remember being able to hear it much beyond that area. There are pumpkin figures at each of the shops along the way that mimic the art/craft at each shop (e.g. a blacksmith pumpkin and a glass blower pumpkin, etc.). Plus it's finally getting cooler and there's just something about being at SDC in the fall. All that to say, consider giving it a shot!

It was crowded today!  Talked with a few favorite employees who said attendance was already at 10,000 by morning, and they weren't expecting that many.  It got more crowded toward 5:00. I got there about 2:30, and walked to the main square about 3. It was full, there was a line to get into Echo Hollow shortly after 4:00, and the Pumpkin area was full.  Lots of bubbles and blinky toys everywhere! The lighted pumpkin path was uncomfortably full, so we walked through quickly.  Hubs and I both noticed there were more pumpkins and lights than when we were there opening day.  We're pretty sure the Pumpkin Fest sign was not over the arch by Echo Hollow opening day, either.  It looks nice. It was a quick walk through to get away from acv's, strollers, and running kids.  We had a great day. Exiting at 8:00 with a crowd presented the usual problems - a log jam of people and several employees trying to separate the groups into walkers and tram riders.

It was there opening day. The only thing that we’ve noticed that they have added is more lights along the path between the pizza place and the new bbq rib place. It was way too dark in that area opening night. Noticed the added lighting there that Friday.

Was told by many employees today that yesterday (Saturday) was 24,000 in the park. Rides were 45 min average for the main rides.

Today was 15-20 min wait.

First time in 36 years I walked out of that park disappointed. They only had 35 vendors at the harvest festival this year compared to 130 previous years. Come 5:45, we were pushed out of shops and pushed into the pumpkin area where it felt like Times Square in NYC of people.

They’ve ruined the harvest festival and will get a lengthy letter from me on this one. Sad that we had many employees tell us who to contact and asked us to voice our concerns because they too didn’t care for the changes this year.

I'm wondering if Dollywood is managing to grab more of the craftsmen than SDC? I know last year when my friends and I were at DW for Halloween, there were a fair amount of craftsmen there and at least one was from Missouri, which surprised me because I would've expected that person to be at SDC 'cause it'd be closer. So I'm wondering if Dollywood is offering more money/time/etc. to craftspeople and therefore are getting them all, which leaves SDC a bit short since both parks have their crafts festivals at the same time.

During the Christmas season, the crowds are all crammed into the park to see the lights at night.

During the Harvest Festival, is it crowded all day (on the busy days) or is there a group that comes during the day for the Craft Days followed by a group that comes later in the day for the Pumpkin Nights?

We were there the first Saturday/Sunday of this month.  Saturday's crowd was very light until about 1pm then it started getting crowded.  It got really crowded closer to dark and when we left close to 8 there were still people coming in the turnstiles.  So I'd say yes there is definitely a crowd coming just for Pumpkin Nights

I went yesterday for about an hour and a half about 3PM and it was miserably crowded. I normally go on Fridays during the day as it is usually empty. I left before I yelled at someone because it was just filled with idiots... The drive from Springfield was just as bad with cars in the fast lane that had no business being in the fast lane and long lines of cars not close enough to pass in a group so I was passing a single car at a time on the right... Sadly, SDC does not sell liquor because I needed a drink by the time I got there and several more for dealing with the crowd...

Attendance of 26,378 and 20,300 last weekend, and 24,300 yesterday is pretty crazy numbers.   With numbers like this they probably are looking at a record attendance year again.   Lets see....next year new Mystic River Falls and probably expansion of Pumpkin Nights with ever expanding Christmas season.   Sounds like our  peaceful, quiet and relaxing 1880's town is going to need some serious infrastructure work.

Maybe next year they'll extend the length of this fest... I got an e-mail yesterday from SDC reminding people that there are only 6 days left for Craft Days/Pumpkin Nights, and it kinda shocked me 'cause it feels as if this fest only just started. Maybe if they extend it next year, the crowds will spread out just enough to be comfortable each day.

FYI at the park right now. It's getting pretty packed. Stop 2-3 is full as well as much of the handicapped preferred parking area. Stop 5 lot is already about half full. Electric scooters are also sold out today so be sure to call ahead or make necessary preparations if you have any disabled guests.

I got there about 9:30 and handicapped parking up front was full. There was a steady stream coming in, including several school buses.  We left about 1:30, and there were still quite a lot coming in.  Weather was perfect, and it was a great day to be there.  Everyone on park seemed to be in a good mood, and the crowds didn't appear too bad at all.

The cowboy stuff had run it's course. Some interesting things, and the show in the Red Gold barn was good. But it had nowhere near the excitement, and draw for mass crowds that Pumpkin Nights does.
The visiting crafters will always have somewhat of a draw, but needs something else added to bring in the big crowds.

In all honesty you could put Harvest Crafts or cowboys with Pumpkin Nights and still would have had a large increase in attendance.  Shoot....you could have called it Tiddlywinks contest and Pumpkin Nights and still had a big spike in attendance.  Its pretty clear Pumpkin Nights is what is bringing them in.

I’m one of the few who agrees with BOTH sides. The Pumpkin Nights is clearly the reason why people are coming. It’s new, it’s fresh, and who doesn’t like pumpkins? However, the cowboys is what gave SDC it’s charm. Everything about SDC has that “SDC charm” I like to call it (think of the pavement smell) whether they’re old or new. The pumpkins have that SDC charm (albeit the music doesn’t help at all). They’re shaped like the crafters there. I love the new addition, but will also miss the ones lost.

I am in the minority here but what is so intriguing about pumpkins ?  I would not walk here to my garage to see a pumpkin. But a full blown crafts festival. YES. As long as the merchandise being created was new and relevant. BUt a carved pumpkin would put me to sleep very fast. I guess it does not take much to entertain people anymore.

I think that the hours have a big part to do with the increased crowds. I don’t recall the previous fall festival being open until 9 or later every night. For us, the hours were part of what for us to visit more this fall, but the atmosphere that Pumpkin Nights creates was also part of it. Specifically the decorations from the square to the pumpkin plaza and the wooded trail, not so much the actual pumpkin plaza. We also never go on Saturdays so not talking about crazy crowd atmosphere either. We were never really interested in the cowboy stuff.

I both agree/disagree with the last 3 posts.  Pumpkin Nights was just "okay" for me - nothing special.  I loved the themed look of the pumpkins (and the evening hours), but... overall, more is needed than just piles of pumpkins.  The rest of the park took a nosedive for Fall, and I missed that!  Bring back the scarecrows, flowers, gourds, wreaths, banners, straw bales, flags, and garlands.  And, spread it throughout the park - not just pumpkin themed areas.  As far as the cowboy fest, I honestly never paid any attention to it until a couple years ago and realized what I was missing. It fits better than the pumpkin theme, even though those pumpkins are really pulling in families.  Losing Kent Rollins and Buck Taylor is a real loss, IMO. I miss the larger number of crafters, but I don't miss the cheap, crappy, Chinese made crap that made it's way into the park through quite a few vendors the last few years.

But the Fall Crafts has been the Fall festival for as long as I have been visiting SDC, nearly 30 years. They started adding something with it some time back. Can't really remember when, but before the ciwboys I think it was harvest fest.
However nothing I can remember has had the overwhelmingly positive reaction as the Pumpkin Nights.

They may very well keep the Craft Days part of this festival going.  I mean SDC usually doesn't change things around too much when attendance is this good, they just expand.  My point is that no matter if it's crafts, cowboys or whatever it is going to be second fiddle with Pumpkin Nights.  Especially with such an increase in attendance that it has shown.  Your post seems to show that you think crafts are the driving force still in this festival and things are added to improve it.  Which at one time it was!  But with the success of Pumpkin Nights you can bet it will be the driving force for years to come.

I think the driving force here is later hours... I think they could have about anything in the evening and it be a success. Kids are mostly in school and most adults have jobs so that left most of the daytime SDC crowd for crafts festival older, retired people. I am neither older, nor retired but, prior to living in Springfield, would take a 3-4 days vacation just for the crafts every year. I bought many pieces including a couple of Buck Taylor's pieces. I loved the cowboy part of it as well... But then again, I like that genre (which looking at me is hard to believe as I've piercings and tattoos and bright red hair). But staying open until 9 or 10 lets the average adult go and often with families. I honestly believe if they did the cowboy part properly AND stayed open until 9 or 10, the attendance would also have gone up. Yes, the pumpkin thing is a draw... but I think it is honestly the later hours that are making the real difference

Yes I have and I still do not get it. As for the dance parties and party plaza they can take that kind of stuff outside the park. It is not SDC at all. You will just have to respect my opinion on this! I am entitled to it !!! I do not need some wedding DJ to tell me how to have a good time or be blasted with chinese made light up trinkets.

I agree that the later hours are drawing a few more people into the park, it always does.  I mean just look at Moonlight Madness it always has a spike in attendance, but what we are seeing here is not just a spike.  In past years a really busy day this time of year is probably 10,000 to 12,000 people, but we are seeing 20,000 to 26,000 on a fairly consistent basis.  Just staying open 3 more hours could not be the driving force for this.  I really like the cowboy stuff also and hate to see it go but it probably did run it's course for now.

With the loss of Kent Rollins, Buck Taylor,  The Cowboy Poet, and the decreased number in Craft Booths the Cowboy/fall/Craft Festival just isnt the same..

Bring them Back!!  Could easily be scheduled for daytime activities. Give "us" something to look forward to and a reason to visit during this time of year. (again).

Then they can do the Pumkin thing at night,
for the kiddies,
and to separate mom and dad from their money..

While I understand what you are saying about the 3 extra hours... think about it this way:

Let's say it the festival is pulling in 50-60% locals (2 hour drive or less) - which I believe it probably is because there have been higher than normal numbers not just on weekends. Local kids get out of school about 3PM... if they drive to SDC, that puts then there near closing... so why even go for an hour or less? When staying open until 9 or 10, it makes going much more palatable to parents. Or for that matter... local people who work until 5 and then drive... no point when closing at 6. But it makes it a bit more worth it if oen until 9 or 10.

The big question is are the hotels and the like seeing big spikes in people staying there? Or is it truly locals? I have been going to Bucket List and the Paddlewheel at Branson Landing a lot lately and I have not seen a huge spike in the number of people there or in Branson Landing that you would expect from vacationers. I mean, yes, weekend days at Branson Landing are generally nuts, but not as high as I would expect for people specifically vacationing for this festival.

My guess is that there has been a huge bump in attendance this year, but on same days I expect it to drop next year. As I struggle to believe that people are specifically going to plan vacations just for this festival. I believe the bump has been locals... I wish I had a way to prove that, though, other than what I have seen

I am sure there are some late vacationers that are showing up to this festival, but I would say they are very few, most are as you say locals or season pass holders.  I think the increase in attendance is people who just like the Halloween atmosphere and season because Halloween is the fastest growing holiday in popularity and money spent over the last few years.  I really can't see a drop in attendance next year or for that matter years to come.  I mean there is so much they can do to expand this festival in the coming years that it looks like to me it will just get bigger.   I myself can take it or leave it, but with attendance numbers like they have received this year the PTB will take this festival as far as they can.

We live 35 minutes away. When looking at the same timeframe as this festival over the past three years, we went once in 2017 and 2018 each. This year we went 6 times. We also know many other people that went to Pumpkin nights multiple times. The hours were a huge factor in our increase in attendance.

There’s not that many on park.  It’s like everyone drove themselves here

It's nice that they have had good weather for these Christmas weekends at least. The weather worked against them so often this year, I'm glad they are catching a break at last.

They mentioned at CC that they had over 100,000 more guests during Pumpkin Nights than they usually do during that time of year, so it was a hit regardless of some of the nasty weather that came through. I think they are still down a good bit for this year overall though, but hard to say where we'll land by year's end. Probably still down some overall from last year.

Next year will be interesting. New ride + more Pumpkins + Christmas. Hopefully set a new record again.

I could be wrong, but I doubt SDC expected to exceed or even match their 2018 numbers. 2018 saw the largest single investment in their history with TT. So I'm not sure they should see it as a disappointment if their numbers are down this year even with the festival enhancements. 2020 may be a different story with a huge investment into Mystic River Falls.

Yeah I turned around on 465. I was about 1 mile from 76 on 465 when traffic stopped. I limped along in left lane until I could cross the median and turn around - which took about 20 minutes. Wasn't worth it... I just get frustrated when there is that many people there and not worth it when I have a season pass

I was there Saturday, and was surprised that the crowds were as "light" as they were. It was a beautiful day! Like always, you just have to know where the bottlenecks are and how to avoid them. The only place where we really got jammed up was coming up the pathway from the depot toward Midtown. Other than that, it was fine.

It is antidotal but all that I have talked to that went during Christmas this year had negative things to say about it. Things like traffic being a nightmare to it just being too crowded. I fear locals like those in NWA will.start to turn away if the infrastructure  getting to the park and the park itself doesn't improve. In fact I had this same conversion with a mother of my daughter's friend that dropped her off for a smallish teen celebration at the house last night. She saw pics of us at SDC and volunteered that she hadn't renewed her season tickets and went on to describe the traffic when she went last week. A mother of 5, that is a lot of season tickets. I will say she thinks it is the best park in America even over Disneyworld. She is a Naples Florida native.

Good thing it’s not a “local hangout park” then.  The numbers keep coming in each year and even though NWA people might be whining now, they’ll be back.  It’s tradition to go and even though they whine, it just wouldn’t be Christmas or whatever without going

Take Disney for example.  They keep raising prices and the crowd keeps coming.  SDC is the same way.  Dollywood too

Happy new year everyone!  This may not be allowed to be answered but how far in advance do they "budget" a day's attendance?   They seem to estimate way low on some days that I would have thought would be budgeted higher.  The week after Christmas seems an extremely popular time to visit.  I know they can't guess the weather accurately far in advance (for that matter neither can the National Weather Service) but it looks like they could guess a best case scenario as far as the weather is concerned (ie larger crowds).

I have posed this question a few times and the best answer I could get is that they do it based off the previous year(s) and that weather is not taken into account. This seems like a VERY poor way to budget and it seems to burn them more than not as it seems that they are often understaffed on the outrageous days...

I've brought up that they should look at things from an engineered or scientific standpoint as this sort of problem is an ideal fit for an industrial or manufacturing engineering standpoint. Just like scheduling shows and placing rides/food stands/etc. should be analyzed. I know this is how the larger parks such as Disney do things... SDC just seems behind on the times on this and I believe their refusal to look at it from this standpoint leads to most of the complaints about the infrastructure problems both with vehicle traffic and parking as well as just general moving through the park issues... I mean, for example, the twisted potato stand near the entrance to Echo Hollow is a clusterf#% as the line blocks egress in all directions. Just putting in a small line queue that forces people into rather than let them line up in a straight line would solve so many issues... It is things like this that SDC is just REALLY bad at... But I don't see them "getting" it although I have seen improvements in some areas where they are enforcing crowd traffic to one side so that it just isn't a mess... But yet they refuse to address the trainwreck that is just past the gates to get in where the stroller and cart area is... people walk in and stop to gather their group and it is just one of the most frustrating sections of the park for me... An industrial engineer would open that area up and move the carts... that area would make more sense near the group relations part...

I think they need to move the bag check and security to the courtyard entrance - so basically from the waterwheel over to the OMP.  Next move the turn styles to the elbow curve - so from the water clock to the wall that separates that courtyard from employee parking.

Next move customer service to where the self serve ticket kiosks are right now.  So enclose that area and then people can take care of that before going through security.  Then move the rental area to the former customer service building.  Move the photo area that is in OMP to where the rental building was - that then opens more floor space for OMP -- also move the trailblazer/show lovers to the old rental building and then remove that building and expand the walkway (as much as you can - considering the cave) to get a wider walkway.

Planning begins as soon as the Farmer's Almanac is published, Farmer's Almanac trumps the NWS, lol.

The way I understand it is if they budgeted for the best case scenario for larger crowds, a lot of food would be wasted.   When they didn't hit their budgeted attendance when Miss Herschend was still alive, she would have the leftover food took to the church.   She would say "we are not wasting any food".   I would think it still would be pretty much on the same basis with all the food that needs to be made in advance.

We went on Monday, December 30th. The budget was for 7,500 people but 13,172 showed up. From what I experienced, I can see how the budget affected food.

1. All Cinnamon Bread at the Mill was sold out by 6:00. They were making more as fast as they could and there was a line waiting.
2. When we got to the apple butter shop at 6:30, No apple turnovers were available there nor were they available at Eva and Delilah's.
3. The staff at Percey's was being very cautious and trying to stretch the cooked items as far as possible. I got a chicken bowl and the portions of rice, beans and chicken were so small they barely covered the bottom of the bowl. They filled the rest of my bowl with lettuce, cheese, etc. - so I guess you could say I had more of a salad than a burrito bowl.

We had a very enjoyable time, despite the budget being off and some of the food items we wanted being gone. I guess that gives us something to look forward to in March.
