Old thread but I'll post anyway! I am a lifetime SDC guest, my first visit was when i was several months old, 27 years ago, and I have been back every year multiple times since. I now use the city for my art, and my influences from this bygone era. Collector of SDC memorobilia, and hopefully someday a citizen (worker) in the park. Good enough?

Ironic that a recent post made this front and center right after i joined. Anyway I found this site by just googling some random history about SDC. I'm a huge history buff with deep interest in the 19th century so SDC is like theme park heaven for me. I'm 18 and have been going to SDC all my life. I'm a Captain in a civil war reenacting unit and I sing and play drums. Well, I guess i'm introduced. Looking forward to posting here! Cheers!

Hi my name is Holly and I have been going to SDC since before I could remember.  I grew up in southern okla and when we moved to Joplin it was a HUGE thing that we were only 2 hours away from Branson and SDC.  I think the first time we went to the park after we moved we got our season passes and have had them ever since.  I love SDC with my whole heart, its just something about that makes me feel almost at home.  I guess you could say its my happy place.  I even spent my 21st birthday at SDC this December.  Our annual Christmas trip with my family from okla fell on my birthday!

I'm not really sure how I stumbled upon this site...I think it was through the SDC facebook page.  I'm a resident assitant at Pittsburg State University and spend a lot of late nights staying up on duty wasting time on the internet.  I decided to check the site out and loved all the forum posts.  I really wanted to know more about the city, especially the history, and so I decided to read on and have pretty much been checking the site almost daily since then.  And now I have decided that I might as well take part in the forums.  So, here I am!

Hey all,  My name is Jason, but every one calls me TIC.  I grow up at SDC, My grandpa and granny, aunts, uncles, and I have all worked at the park.  It's a family thing.  I havent worked at the park sence 92, but my wife and I and 5 kids go all the time.  I want my kids to grow up at the park like I did.  Yes they love the rides but we like to teach them how it was in the past, when times were slower and not come and go all the time.  I'm 36 and my wife is 31...kids are two 13 year olds boy and girl,  two 11 year olds both girls and a 9 year old boy.   I found this site just playing around trying to find old stuff about the part and it is great......I'm gonna love talking to ya'll

I'm a newbie..
I'm a big fan of Silver Dollar City and all it has to offer.. though I'm rather new to the park considering the length of time some of you have been attending the park.
I made made my first visit in 1988 and loved it!  My parents had visited in 1976 when they visited the area and I didn't get to see the place in the photographs until 12 years later.
My sister wearing a shirt that exposed her bellybutton was given a ticket at the front gate for "belly exposure"  I wanted that job.  Dress up and harass the guests... my sister still has that ticket written by Deputy Tweedle.
I fell in love with Fire in the Hole and the Lost River... The line back then sooooooooooo long!  I want to walk the old queue line one more time.. i loved the little climbing area in there.
Now I find myself on the occasional cave tour ... i didn't know the park had a cave until 1999.. lol oops
I always ran through the Hospitality House and rode rides all day... no time for the cave until I grew up.
And being a coaster fanatic, I hop on Powderkeg & Wildfire several times... though my favorite ride is the Barn Swing.  It's the only ride I've ridden in a while that causes the butterflys in the belly when you reach the apex of the swing.

bsf, have you ever looked over your head at the opposite horizon at the apex of the forward swing.  The horizon is upside down on the other side, while the horizon in front of you is right-side up!  I wonder how they do that.

Welcome to the site to you and Jason!

I have already posted a few times but wanted to introduce myself.
My name is Sarah and my first visit to SDC was in 1984, at the age of 2.  When I was young we camped there for a week every summer.  It was always how we spent vacations until we got older and involved in too many things.

I miss the feeling that the park used to have, but I also love it for what it has become.

My first date with my husband was to SDC (we wanted to be able to do something fun together without running in to people we knew) and it was his first visit to the park in more than 20 years.
Now we are passing it down to our 2 kids.  So...we now spend a lot of time in the grand exposition area.

My favorite thing is Fire in the Hole.  We have had a lot of great times in the City.

Can't wait to get to know all of you better!

My name is Kerry and my first visit to SDC was in 1984 when I was five.  After going again with my parents a couple of years later, I didn't go back until 1999 with a college group I was working for and that trip made me fall in love with the park all over again.  I've been back every year since 2006, and this year I got my first season pass.  I've been using it to take our three-year-old daughter every few weeks since we live about three hours away, and we're headed back in a couple of weeks for our first daddy-daughter trip.

My favorite parts have always been Grandfather's Mansion and Fire In the Hole, and I've introduced them to my daughter with mixed results...she loves GM, but it's taking her a while to warm up to FITH (she likes everything but the drops she can't see coming!).

I might be becoming overly obsessed with SDC, but it's the one place that feels the same way to me that it did when I was a kid, and everything about the park is like a magnet drawing me back.  I can't wait until this summer when I take a week's vacation and spend every bit of it eating buffet breakfasts at the Mill and getting soaked on Lost River of the Ozarks.  Thanks so much to whoever started this site, because I check in every day to see what's going on!

Well, I have been going so SDC since I was 5 or 6 years old.  I am 37 now and still enjoy going as much as my kids do.  In those 31 or 32 years I have only missed 2 seasons of SDC.  I am a huge fan of the park probably because of the theme.  I am a country boy and that stuff appeals to me.  I used to listen to stories told by my grandparents about when they grew up.  So much of the crafts there remind me of those stories.

I also love being in the Ozarks.  I am a flat lander from southern Arkansas.  Go Hogs!!!!  If I did not have so much tying me to where I live, I would move to Branson in a heart beat.  Oh well I guess I will have to settle for my 4 to 6 trips to Branson and SDC a year.

I found out about your site just searching the internet about anything to do with SDC.  It is a great site.  Side note, I do not get a whole lot of time to get on the net so if my replies are slow coming, don't hold that against me.

My name is Justin, and I first went to SDC when I was 4, back in 1981.  We visited every year, bringing more and more friends.  In 1998, I became a Citizen and worked in Tom Sawyer's Playground/The Petting Zoo.  The next season, I was at Lost River, with a stint in Geyser Gulch for Christmas.  A job offer I couldn't refuse came along, and I had to move away, but we still visit every year since. :)

Ayup. The last time I was there, GG was open, and my soon-to-be-14 son was too small to ride anything except FitH, Lost Mine, and TNT.

Not sure when it was I noticed your site.  I was just craving stuff about SDC and googled.  I am an addict, as I'm leaving Branson after a trip, I'm already looking forward to my next one.  My favorite season is Christmas at the park, it charges my batteries for the whole season.  I have become a huge fan of "A Christmas Carol" at the opera house, can't miss it or the trip is a loss.  I sing with the Dicken's Carolers in Kansas City, which makes it a challenge to get down here for the lights and sounds, but I manage.  But getting back to the park in general, SDC, I feel has it hands down over everyone else.  The people that work there have always made it a fun place to go, so the rides are just icing on the cake.  LOVE IT!
In closing, thanks for this site, it is just another way I can feel close to my "memories worth repeating".

Hello everybody,

my parents first took me to SDC when I was just a baby - I believe the first family trip was either 78 or 79.

Like many, for me going to SDC feels like going home again.

Later,

Hi my name is Avis - I am from Southern Illinois and I work as a cataloger for a law school library.  I have been coming to Branson and Silver Dollar City since I was 12 and I am starting on my second family.  I have raised my son in the tradition and now I have 11 year old twin girls and I am teaching them in the tradition too.

I came upon your web site by web surfing and I have been reading your posts numerous times a day.  So I have decided to join a good group of people who I share the love of SDC.

Thanks for letting me be part of your SDC family :D

Hi guys! I've been lurking for a while, enjoying all of the historical pictures and info about SDC. But I just got my season pass in the mail and in anticipation of the new season I thought I should introduce myself and think about becoming active around here. My goal this year is to take a lot of pics while I'm in the city. I've been going to SDC since I was a wee little kid and I wish I had pictures of my 30 some odd years of visiting. But better late than never, I will take a ton of pics this year.

Hi Everybody!  I found SDC Fans in a google search I think, and have really enjoyed reading your posts and looking at the photos of the park updates.  Thanks to everyone who does that for those of us who live so far away.  My real name is Ron but I decided to use the name "Pastor Don" because I was called up on stage to be in the Frontier Follies show in 2004 and Choctaw Charlie (Shannon) said, "Give the gun Pastor Don", after I "shot out all the lights".  He went on to comment: "You don't hear that too often!"  My family first discovered SDC when we were living in central Illinois about 9 years ago.  We went just about every year when it was just a 5 hour drive for us, and in 2004 we had season tickets.  We moved to South Dakota in 2007 and the last time I was at SDC was in May of that year.  We're finally getting to go back in June and I'm really excited.  Turning 50 this year, so I GET IN FREE!!
I have been a Disney park fan for many years, but over the years SDC has grown on me to the point where it is replacing Disneyland as the "happiest place on earth".  (After all, who wants to go to California these days?  :P)
Our favorite ride is Wildfire with Powderkeg as a close second.
One of my dreams over the years has been to take a summer sabbatical and work at SDC, but don't know if that will ever happen, when my daughter was 7 or 8 she wanted to be a "Saloon Girl".  (Try explaining that to a church group!)
One of my favorite things to do is go to the park early right when it opens, and eat breakfast at Mollie's Mill, then, after the flag raising, it's off to Wildfire!   I've shot a lot of video at SDC over the years and right now I'm working on one called "The Best of SDC" to post on the 50th Anniversary site.
Well, thanks for having this site and all you folks who go opening weekend be sure to take lots of pictures of River Blast to share those of us who have to wait a couple more months!

PastorDon, take it from me, a guy who worked at SDC from 78-84...if you get a chance to work there someday, do it! It has been over a quarter of a century since I've been an employee there, but I can honestly tell  you, I carry SDC with me in my heart and mind wherever I go and to any other job I have had. My experience in my late teens and early 20s back then at SDC and working at one of the old, defunct music shows (Hee Haw) led me to a mass communications core at college, and onto a 20 career in radio broadcasting. I'm out of radio now, and working in healthcare, but everytime I have a chance to visit a few minutes with patients coming through the hospital I work at, a throw a little humor and a smile their way, just like I did all those years ago as a "citizen." Memories to last a lifetime. Guaranteed!

Thanks for the encouragement, Junior.  I have dreams of being on stage in the saloon show, but don't know if it will ever happen.  Maybe I'll just have to wait until I "retire" and go down and drive a shuttle bus for the summer like a retired pastor I met there a few years ago.  By the way, I did about 8 years in radio myself before I went into the ministry.

I worked at radio stations at Cape Girardeau, MO (84-85) Dexter, MO (85-88) Kennett, MO (88-90) Forrest City, AR (90-03) and a short stint at a radio station in Rogers, AR (03) Primarily as a news reporter, but also announcing. Many of my stories appeared on the Learfield Data News Service wire and Brownfield Ag Net in MO, and hundreds of stories on the Arkansas Radio Network and Arkansas Associated Press Broadcasters Asn. in Arkansas. Where did you work at PastorDon?

All of my radio experience was here in South Dakota.  I worked for KKLS & KKHJ in Rapid City in the early 80's for about 5 1/2 years where I did mostly news reporting.  Then in the later 80's I was news director at KWYR Radio in Winner for about 3 years.  I got to meet a number of celebrities over the years, and got to see 2 sitting presidents and one former one.  I sometimes miss it and think I'd do a lot better job after all these years of public speaking.  I'd love to get a gig doing voiceovers or recording books on tape.

I was in Arkansas during the time Clinton was Governor and President, so I got to meet and interview him a few times, Also Mike Huckabee, Jim Guy Tucker, Win Rockefeller in Arkansas, John Ashcroft, John Danforth, Kit Bond in Missouri. All high ranking politicians. Most were interesting people. Some strictly political animals. Rockefeller and Huckabee were most personable, most easy for me to approach and work with. Also got to interview Mary Steenburgen, Miss America Debby Turner, a few Miss Arkansas', and be in the same room and/or interview Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, The Kentucky Headhunters, and a few others. Got to see Ronald Reagan as President, George Bush the First as Vice President, that was pretty cool. I found out if you have a legitamate reason, you can meet and speak with almost anybody, from presidents to celebrities. Plus, they WANT the media attention.  Oh, well...those were the days. It's all over now, baby blue!

Howdy folks! My name is Jonathan, I am nearly 25 years old, and I’m the only person in town who listens to bluegrass music with their car windows down. I have lived in The Natural State (Arkansas) for all of my life, and I have visited Silver Dollar City since I was in diapers.

In fact I can remember back to the early 1990’s as little kid, I once peered over the miniature Thunderation publicity model before the real one was actually built. Oh those were the days! The Sky Chase Balloon ride was my favorite attraction as a child.

I love bluegrass, and barbeque, and I would pass up a trip to Disney World to go to Silver Dollar City any day of the week. :D

I also enjoy geocaching for anyone of you who may already know what that is.

Hi!  I discovered this site a few weeks ago when I saw it mentioned on the 1branson.com forum, and I couldn't get here fast enough!  I've really enjoyed reading over the posts here, and it's been a great way to get geared up for our upcoming trip!

I think my first visit to Branson...and Silver Dollar City...was in the late seventies.  I'm not really sure what drew my parents to Branson for that first visit, but I remember that we stayed at (what seemed to be to be) a really old motel, called the Three Bears Inn.  We went to a washateria to do laundry, and my dad struck up a conversation with an older man there, asking him what there was to Silver Dollar City and if it would be worth the time and money to go there.  The guy said yes, and in fact he worked there and offered to give us some free tickets (I think they were free, although it may have been coupons).  We all loved Silver Dollar City (and Branson) so much that we returned several times over the next decade.

My husband and I hadn't been married quite a year when we made our first trip together (his first ever) to Branson. We've made 5 other trips since then, bringing a larger crew each time.  Our six children all have wonderful memories of Silver Dollar City, and on our last trip we were able to introduce 3 friends to the area.  Sadly they'd been under the impression that Branson was a place "for old people", but they know different now!  Our upcoming trip is somewhat bittersweet, as our 2 older boys are out of the home (one on his own, one away at college), so for the first time we're downsizing, and there will "only" be 6 of us.  Our little guy was just a baby on our last trip, though, and he's five now, so we're looking forward to seeing him discover Silver Dollar City!

Hi. We found this site via SDCs Facebook page.
My parents went to SDC for their honeymoon back in the early 60s, they started taking me when i was very young. I have been going ever since. Now my fiance' & i have been season pass holders for about 5 years now, we head that way about every 2 months. I proposed to her by the lil' creek that is by Ray The knife makers Shop.
What we like most about the park is the smells.. The employees are kind & courteous, the bluegrass music is great to hear, just the whole experience!
Our favorite rides are The Giant Swing - Fire in the Hole, & Powderkeg.

Just waitin' for this weather to get better so we can come on down!!

Hi, I've been on this site about a month and done a few posts.  I took my alias Duelist from the style of Cowboy Action Shooting I do.  The Duelist category fires the six-shooters one handed.  I live 20 miles southwest of Little Rock and have been going to SDC since 1969 so I got to do a lot of the early things like ride the stagecoach, Jim Owen's Float Trip and Herman the Hermit's treehouse.  I'm a big Old West Fanatic and SDC definitely helped keep my interest in that over the years.  I, my wife and 2 kids are all season pass holders.  My wife and I have had season passes since 1990.  I found this site by Googling "new ride at Silver Dollar City".  And I second Paul Harvey when he said "May there ever be a Silver Dollar City"!

I found the site by Google-ing SDC and decided to check it out. I then found myself spending several hours on it each day (say.....what time is it?) But I have only known about it for about three days, so I am not an addict quite yet!
I have been to SDC only three times in my 41 years (ok, I know...be easy)! But the last time there, in May of 08', hooked me and enveloped me. Now, I am beating a path to get back there. I have joined this site because I have found many of you have the same sentiment and heartfelt feeling that I do about the park and it is a great place to visit SDC when you cant actually visit the park itself. I look forward to reading more great stories and forum posts! Thanks everyone!

I've been cruising this site since it came on line in 07, and have been a member since January of this year. Over 500 posts so far. I was a citizen at SDC from 78-84, and have carried a love for the park with me everywhere I have gone since then. I enjoy visiting with others  on this site that share a love for a special theme park. We encourage you to post vacation photos and videos of SDC here, and share your memories, and concerns about the park. Look forward to hearing more from you soon. -Junior Dugan

Hi I'm maddi. I'm 14 years old and I live in Texas. My parents have been taking me to SDC before I was even a year old and I absolutly love it! One thing that makes stand out from my family is that when they walk in to SDC they feel like their going into nothing more than a theme park, but when I go in I see so much more and want to know more about everything at SDC and how it got there, the storyline behind it etc., etc. (which is probably why I'm such an SDC nerd!) I found SDC fans in 2007 when I was googling for an informative website that would give me insiders on up-to-date SDC events. At the time I was so nervous to be a member because of my age difference. I have never met anyone even close to my age that is as interested in SDC as I am. I finally realized that since I am an SDC fan and want to know just as much about SDC as anyone else on this website, than I can be a member. So right now as a newbie I'm just going to make as many posts I can and make them best that I know that I can make them.

Outside my SDC obsession ;D I really like to sing and play the guitar and piano. I hope to go to College of the Ozarks to become a high school choir director.

It's great to see that us younger folk love SDC as much as the people that have been going since the 60's and 70's! It makes me believe that the true spirit of SDC will never die.

Well, my name's Tony. I'm a machinist and musician from Tulsa. I'm 42 years old, a huge history buff, married to my sweetie for twenty years, one adopted daughter from Korea, and I must say there is no place on Earth like Silver Dollar City. I went there as a child, probably about  1974, and again in 1978. I remember the diving bell, a steam engine powered saw, the flooded mine, the train robbers, but most of all Herman's tree house. I stumbled across this site as I was searching for info on the status of the tree house. My family and I just got back from a visit to the park last week. As usual, it was magic. I'm certainly glad to meet up with you guys that feel the same way I do about the place. Makes me happy.

Hi I am Melonie I am a newbie.  I found this site while researching where my husband and I could go on vacation in September.  I have only been to SDC once and that was way back in 1989.  I was a teenager and went with my youth group leaders.  I do not remember much from it except that I loved it, and liked it more than Six Flags in St.  Louis because things were more my speed. ( I do remember the candles and the candle makers cause I have always loved candles.)   Not a thrill ride rider lol. I remember attending a christian concert in the evening that was wonderful.  We were going to go camping AGAIN.  But decided since we never had a honeymoon to go to Branson.  I am 37 and live in Southeast Missouri.

Hello Melonie!  :)

As I am sure you have already discovered, Silver Dollar City sure has grown since 1989. Since then they have built the Grand Exposition, the Culinary School, three new roller coasters not including Buzz Saw Falls which has come, and gone, and a much bigger parking lot.

One thing that hasn't changed though is the wonderful poeple, and the charm that is Silver Dollar City.

Welcome aboard!  :D

Hello, ya'll. Ryan here. Been visiting the site for well over a year now, but recently joined so I could start weighing in on all the interesting topics discussed here. Can't remember what year I visited SDC first, but it had to have been in the mid-80's. Unfortunately, I didn't make it back until about six years ago, but I quickly fell in love with the park all over again and my wife and I have been going back every year since. Live near St. Louis so I'm not terribly far away, but not quite close enough to visit several times a year. Usually head down at some point during the Harvest Festival as it's our favorite time of year and really seems to accentuate SDC's intoxicating charm. Really hoping to get back down around Christmas as we've never experienced SDC at that time of year. And we love Christmas.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself.

Hello Ryan! :)

First off, I am a huge fan of Back to the Future III so you have already scored high points there. Secondly, the Harvest Festival is likewise my favorite festival of all. There is something about the cooler weather, and the changing leaves, and the soothing bluegrass music, and the smell of fresh cinnamon buns in the air that really tickles all of the senses.

Welcome aboard! ;D

BTTF 1& 3 are great, 2 was just plain weird! Welcome Ryan, Youhave a great Website ahead of you. There is a wealth of information here as well as a hep of friendly folks to answer any questions. I also am near StL, and make the trip several times a year, so I understand! The 4 hr drivr down seems to fly by, the drive back is pretty grueling-not much to look forward to once leaving SDC. I highly suggest SDC Christmas. Though cold most of the time, the ability to see the park transformed is great. AND the wassail, and hot chocolate is pretty darn good too!

I believe the star system works like this.

* = Newbie 0-49 Post
** = Jr. Citizen 50-99 Post
*** = Citizen 100-249 Post
**** = Post Master 250-499 Post
***** = Lives here 500-Plus Post

So not too much longer, and you will officially be a Jr. Citizen!  ;D

Been here a couple weeks. Been going to SDC most of my life. My grandparents owned at Treasure Lake from 1984 until they passed away. They knew most of the  entertainers back when most of them were local talent. I always loved bluegrass music and decided to learn to play the violin after watching Shoji play at the Starlight theater in 1984. Now I play fiddle, mandolin, bass, and acoustic guitar in a band in Oklahoma City called Southern Ride. Would love to get the chance to play in Branson someday. I am a computer geek professionally, but kinda burned out and looking for something else.

It's tough to make a living as a musician. However, if you have the passon...go for it. I was involved in the local entertainment scene in Branson in the late 70s/early 80s, when everything was local, and it was great fun. Practice, practice, practice!

I'm not exactly a Newbie, but I'll post here anyway to "make it official".  I've been going to SDC basically since I was born.  My parents used to fish Table Rock Lake every year.  One year they heard about this new place Silver Dollar City.  So, my mom and her friend thought they'd try it out (with the kids, of course, while the dads fished), and the rest is history.  We've averaged at least one visit a year since then.  I'm 44, so I haven't been around since the park began, but almost so.  It's easily my favorite theme park, and I like something about most of the ones I've visited, so that's saying something.  No other park is as relaxing and as good at letting you get away from the hubbub of life.  Every time we go, the first thing my mom (now coming with her grandkids) says as we walk in is, "We're back home!"

Title: Re: The Newbies Thread
Post by: Junior on September 28, 2010, 12:28:12 PM
I'm sure Branson could use another computer consulting business. Before making the move, try to network with other computer guys in the area and visit the "regular" and not the tourist parts of town and investigate the issue a lot before making a move. Do  your research, and ask potential clients about their needs before doing anything.

I have only logged onto your site 3 or 4 times..  But do enjoy all the discussions..  I just wanted to get started on my newbie status.   and let you know you are doing a great job, and i will obviously continue watching.......

I am a Branson local.  Used to work at the park a long, long time ago (Buzz Saw Falls Apart was my ride ;)).  I have been going to Branson and SDC my whole life, though I've only lived here for about 13 years.  A friend sent me the link to this place, so that's how I found out about it.  Love the site!  Am really enjoying learning things I never knew about the park that seem to be like common knowledge here!  Awesome site!  I hope to be participating here lots and lots! :)

It's funny you all should mention that since I am in the exact same boat. Back in my younger, younger days, I would spend all day long riding the rides at Silver Dollar City. This past trip however, I rode Powder Keg first thing in the morning to um, rapidly excel my wake up process for the day, and then for the most part, I just floated around the park like a leaf tumbling in the wind.

I actually enjoyed it much more thoroughly, and I have a greater appreciation for what Silver Dollar City is all about. I must have spent an hour just listening to Judy on the front porch of the McHaffie’s Homestead tell her endless stories. Then I spent some time watching blade smith Ray Johnson make a knife, and watch the lye soap lady make her soap. I enjoyed the slower pace at Silver Dollar City immensely.  :)

What do you have to do to change from newbie status? Is it based on the number of posts you have? Not that I mind being a newbie, I just thought that this might give me one more post to add to my total to move me to the next level if it was. I'm anything but a newbie. I've been going to SDC for years and I've read hours and hours worth of posts on this website. Many of my hours are not logged as I never use to log in when reading the posts. I started logging in thinking maybe time logged in might change my status. On a side note, it's not been much fun watching the St. Louis Rams beat up on my poor and pathetic Denver Broncos.

Hey Everyone,
My name is Erik, and I am 23 years old. I found and became a member of this site in November 2010. I was looking up random history on SDC when this site popped up with info. I am so glad that I found this site, I have visited it everyday since; and I am actually more addicted to it than Facebook now! haha
My screen name is DollarCityBoy because when I was little, I use to call it "Dollar City" for some reason. I also use to call the Ball Pit "New Balls," and that name stuck for many years. I called it "New Balls" because they use to be brown, and then they changed them to blue.
I have been going to SDC since I was a baby. My family lives in Arkansas (about a 3-4 hour drive for us). My parents have been Season Pass holders for about 30 years now. I have many wonderful memories of SDC with my parents and grandmother, who often came with us. She passed away this last year, and we miss her terribly. She was 92. When she would come with us, she would often ride The Flooded Mine; she just got her cane and hopped in those ore boats like it was nothing!  :) It was a sentimental Christmas for us, as we watched the Tree lighting ceremony, her favorite was "carol of the bells." I remembered all the years we would watch the tree with her, and I thought what a wonderful view she must have from Heaven.
I have been married for just over a year now, and it has been fun to create new memories with my wife.
Silver Dollar City is apart of my life, its apart of my family. I am thankful to have this site to share with others "Memories that are worth repeating."

Hey there Erik!

Be careful as SDCFans.com is very addictive! I have thought about checking into SDCFans.com Anonymous to rehabilitate myself from this website. So far, it hasn’t been working! ;)

You mentioned you were from Arkansas. Several people on these forums including myself are also from Arkansas. Currently I live in Little Rock, and I get to enjoy old Highway 65 all the way to Branson.

Silver Dollar City truly is a family affair, and it is a wonderful place to create traditions. I am glad to hear that you, and your wife had started your very own family traditions.

Welcome aboard! ;D

I've been on here for about a month, but just found this thread.

I found this site while doing a search for something about Silver Dollar City although I don't remember exactly what. I stumbled across it a couple more times while searching for some history of SDC and that's when I started really reading the posts. I lurked for about 6 months, became fascinated with Rube's limitless collection of memorabilia, and finally decided to join to ask a question about some viewmaster reels I had just bought.

We are a family of 6, 3 teenagers and and 4 year old and are on 3rd year of having season passes. We first visited as a family in '01 on our first trip to Branson. It seems odd now that we never went there before since we're only a few hours away, but since we've certainly fell in love with Stone and Taney counties as well as SDC and make 5-6 trips or more a year now. We went to CC once while they were open, have been to Talking Rocks, Ride the Ducks and Dixie Stampede numerous times. Have never been to WW or BB. I have vague memories of my dad talking me to SDC when I was probably 8 or 9 in the late 70's. About the only thing I really remember is FITH, and I think that's why I love it so much now.

Yes, I too have found how addicting this forum can be, but thoroughly enjoy every minute of it. (aside from the seemingly endless stream of acronyms ;D)

Hello! My name is Mandy and I'm a newbie!

I started a thread a couple days ago, but wanted to pop over here and introduce myself properly!

I took a few trips to SDC as a kid with my family, and my hubby and I went 9 years ago for our first anniversary. Now the kiddos have come along, 2 boys, ages 5 & 2. We took a trip up in December for 2 days. It was my first time seeing SDC at  Christmas. The boys had a big time. Their favorite rides were the Happy Frogs and the Flooded Mine. We bought season passes for this year and have 4-5 trips planned. The first one is opening day! We are getting excited!

Hi, everyone. I have really enjoyed all the posts on this site. My family is going to SDC the first weekend in June. This will be the first time for my husband and kids - I went with my family some time in the mid-70's, as a gradeschool child. I remember the tilted mansion, the stagecoach ride, and an outside show (not sure exactly which it was). I LOVE amusement parks and I am really excited to see SDC again. Does anyone know if the aforementioned weekend will be crowded? It is between festivals. I'm hoping my family loves SDC - I want to convert our tickets to season passes if they do.

Only 4 1/2 weeks to go until our trip to SDC! I am making a notebook with all of the SDC and Branson info I can find - my family can look at it on the 6-hour trip to Branson. Hopefully that will get them as excited as I am already. I couldn't stand the thought of only one trip to SDC, so I broke down and bought season passes for the four of us. Now we are planning on going for our anniversary (22 years) in October and for Christmas.

Hi.  I have been lurking here for about a month now and decided it is probably a good time to introduce myself. My DH and I have been coming to SDC for the past 21 years.  It is like our home away from home, and now that we are proud parents of a 3 and 1 yr old.. yes.. our first children!!!... we are bringing them up right and teaching them to love SDC the way we do.  Living only 3 hrs away, Branons is like our home away from home.  I enjoy reading about all the memories of the park and seeing what new things lie ahead.  Thanks for allowing me to become part of this group.

My name is Todd (I'm the one with the pipe!) and the other fella is Champ Herren. He's the bona fide Hillbilly of the two of us. The second photo is of the two of us with the late Mitch Jayne, Ozark folklorist and bass player with the Darlings/Dillards on "The Andy Griffith Show".

I'm a librarian and history instructor at OTC in Springfield. Champ & I present a program, "What's Hidin' in the Haw Bushes?", about local ghost stories and superstitions, to area civic/scout/historical/etc. groups in SW MO and NW AR. We focus mainly on the writings of Vance Randoph.

I first found the forum while looking for photos of Artie Ayers' Lost Silver Mine play -- my mom is a Yocum, so the Yocum Silver Dollar/Breadtray Mountain story is a favorite of mine.

Gotta admit, I was in Springfield, MO over the weekend and the town I knew as a college kid has changed so much I did not know my way around. So please, what is OTC? I'm very jealous, my fantasy job would be to finish the academic work and teach Ozarks history at the upper high school or college level. But shucks, gotta pass college alegbra, and THAT ain't happening! Doing some freelance writing on Ozarks topics is probably as close as I'll get, but I am really enjoying that.

Nice to have you on board Clancomyn! Question, can you clarify the myth/story regarding Devils Pool at Table Rock? My family has a few versions they were told back in the 50's plus what the locals/Big Cedar tells but something tells me there is more to the story or actual fact? I've always been intriged so to speak.

I've got a booklet called "Devil's Pool: A History of Big Cedar Lodge" by Charlie Farmer. He discusses the weird rumors about the location. the spring was initially a watering spot for Osage Indians. They considered it a sacred place. Later, pioneers used it as a watering hole, too, but they called it Devil's Pool because it was a shady, mysterious spot that appeared bottomless. Later, after the Devil's Pool Resort was built, the ex-wife of the resort founder died under mysterious circumstances while in Mexico City, Mexico. Her ashes were sent back to the Ozarks, and at a funeral service, M. Graham Clark (who was a president of College of the Ozarks) spread her ashes off the back patio of her home at the resort. Since then, the house reportedly is haunted. So is another building on the property. Women who work for Big Cedar Lodge say the Worman Home is haunted. From the book, "they feel cold breezes slicing through rooms on hot, muggy days. They hear whispers, murmurs, soft voices, footsteps they wish they never heard." At the Simmons House on the property ghosts are sensed, too. Simmons House serves as Devil's Pool Restaurant now. Shadowy figures have also been seen by the marina and around Devil's Pool. Don't know how much of this stuff is rumor or truth, but it is presented in the booklet as fact.

I have not mentioned it yet, but, HOW COOL IS IT to have your picture taken with a "Darling/Dillard?" I did work across from Dockside Theater at the diving bell in the early '80s when Rodney Dillard first performed at SDC. I did have a nice conversation with him when he first was on park, and the Dugan boys sometimes informally babysat his son, who during that first season Rodney performed, would wander the park on a pretty regular basis. So I'm glad I have that Darling/Dillard experience, too. Mitch was a talented fellow and had an interesting life.

BTW, the fellow in the photo with me, Champ, has a SDC connection -- his brother worked as a toymaker in the toy shop in the early '80s.

Mitch was a heckuva a nice guy. I got to meet him twice while presenting Ozarks superstitions programs at Alley Mill and Big Spring in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. We lost a good one.

I'll invite Champ to the forum. We just got back this afternoon on a whirlwind trip of ghost story sites in Stone and Christian Counties.

Eagle1: I'll defer to the booklet that junior mentioned; to be quite honest, I  had never heard that one before, but elements of the story remind me of the story of the Osage and Marvel Cave. There is also another "Devil's Den" legend in Webster County, near Marshfield, and a student of mine a number of years ago claimed to have known where the den was.

Of course, I'm the fellow who spent almost an hour driving around Reed Springs yesterday looking for the fabled Dead Man's Pond...

Just west of Reeds Spring going toward Cassville there is a Yoakum Pond Road. Probably the place you are looking for. You must be familar with Vance Randolph's Ozark Magic and Folklore book, which has the story about the pond in it, if I remember correctly.

Ironically, Yocum Pond is located just west of the Hwy 13/76 intersection, and just south of Yocum/Yoakum Pond Rd, near the new high school. We found the pond after speaking to a community group in Cape Fair. Once I get some of the photos uploaded, I'll post them in another thread, if anyone is interested.  :P

After finding the pond, we headed towards Crane to visit the site of another story described in Randolph involving the Oak Grove School House ghost...but that's another story.  ;D

I'm assuming that Yocum Pond and Dead's Man Pond are one in the same. Randolph is where I first "heard" the story, but back in the early 1990s, a good friend of mine named Fred Schweitzer produced a documentary on KY3 called "Fight Night", which featured "reenactments" of local ghost stories. Dead Man's Pond was featured on the first episode, along with Breadtray Mountain, which also has a Yocum connection.

In a chance to read what Junior brought up and same you're doing....I need to get time to confirm if that's what my G'pa (born raised in Cassville) and as a young boy played in the Marvel Cave along with around Devil's Pool. The stories I remember are close yet a few details are hazy. I'll reply again once I review with Mom and G'pa family. Something about a marriage (to a hillbilly) that was not accepted by the Indian tribe and an Indian girl losing her life...? That's what started the legend? Don't you just love how stories/legends go.....takes time to figure out eh?

That also sounds like the story of Virgin Bluff near Cape Fair, and even a variant of the legend of the Spooklight at Hornet, MO, just SW of Joplin.

Hello fellow SDC fans! I've been following this forum since the HFEC episode of Undercover Boss, and I finally took the plunge to join. I don't exactly remember how I found the site. Probably Google-ing during the show. I just got back from an Old Time Christmas visit, I'll post a review tomorrow I hope.

My grandparents and Dad have been going to SDC since around the beginning (Dad remembers the Stagecoach, makes it early, right?). My grandparents have probably gone every year.  Both my parents had their Senior trips at SDC. They also have some cool stories about their honeymoon there.

My first SDC "visit" would be my parents' trip just a month before I was born in '88. One of the Homestead Pickers joked that my mom was stealing a watermelon. (I swear this is the reason why I don't like them. ;)) I've gone every year from pre-kindergarten until early High School (Early-to-mid 2000s. I think the last year was before GE-area went in?).  Family got busy, tickets went up, my parents got a bit burnt out and my grandfather had some bad health.

My husband and I now live in Springfield. Neither of us had been in years (best I can figure, it had been about 7 for me) and I was feeling the urge. We bought Season Passes and went this summer for our first anniversary. We picked a good time too, passholder's Appreciation Days. ;D

I have so many happy memories tied to the park. (Two weeks every summer with all my cousins = a ton of fun!) I'm happy to find some people that love it as much as I do! I love reading the stories about how the parked once was.

Welcome Ozarks Gal! Glad you finally took the plunge and joined, looking forward to reading future post from you. You are a year younger than I am, so we have experienced the park the same way.
A lot happend in those 7 years you missed out on SDC fun, but glad to hear you and your husband returned and enjoyed yourselves.  :)

I'm glad to know someone who grew up with the same park as I remember!  In some ways the park is just the same, and in some ways it is so different. There's the big things, like the Grand Exposition, Wilson's Farm, and Half Dollar Holler. And there are the little things, like no more bookstore on Hill Street and the re-location of the Apple Butter Shop.  I still love the park, but there are bittersweet moments as well. (The lonely-looking Treehouse and Waterboggan tower come to mind.) I could go on, but I'll save those for another time.

I really miss the Treehouse.  Wouldn't it be nice if they would renovate it?

I would love to see that done but as brought up in another thread, it would have to be ADA complient and SDC might not want to invest in that large of an ADA compliant scale. It would be neat to see how they would do it though....

Hi, my name is Juanita, I am How-do's wife. The last time I had been to SDC, I was 16, which was back in '76. After a few years of dating, we went to SDC together, in '05. I enjoyed every minute of it all over again. There was so much to see and remember, it took me back. I love the woodsy location and feel! Waiting to go back.

Helo all!
I have been a forum reader for about a year now and finally joined up.  I have been going to SDC since birth in 1967 and have seen a lot of park growth and change over the years.  On some of my vacation days away from my full time career I guest carve at Valley Road Woodcarvers and love having the oportunity to share the craftsmanship and art with others. My goals there are to spark an interest in carving in other people through my demonstrations, and become better at my craft while enjoying working with and learning from other craftsmen that share my interests.  Below I have posted links to my Facebook artists page and to my carving gallery on the Woodcarving Illustrated website.

Thanks a lot, looking forward to spring and another enjoyable season!

I am really glad to have found this place.  Finally, a place where people who love SDC as much as we do can talk...

I have been on the Disney Boards for a long time, but considering we go there once over the course of a few years, I thought it was better to spend some time at a place where we go 5-6 times every year.  How I didn't know this place existed, is beyond me.

Anyway... I've been reading some posts this morning.  Seems like a great place...

Did they change the policy on the mugs in regards to refills?
as of now, the staff told us if you buy the 2012 they will only be honored for this season, the older cups will still be honored NEXT season, they didn't say forever so no one knows for sure if next season is the last time you can use a mug for refills or not.
Title: Re: The Newbies Thread
Post by: MCLFLN on May 04, 2012, 06:30:16 PM
did they change the design of the cups also or just the images on them?

I assume they will have to have some way of easily identifying which cups were from before/after the policy change....

The mugs are structured the same, but the design printed on them is highlighting all of the fests (and mini-fests) of the year. The handle and lid are brown this time (which I really like). On the side of the mug, next to the handle, it's printed that this mug can only be refilled at 2012 prices during 2012.
Title: Re: The Newbies Thread
Post by: MissinTheGreenTrams on May 05, 2012, 08:48:40 AM
If it says that it can be refilled at 2012 prices for 2012 then come 2013 that will be confusing. It did not state that it was only good for 2012 right? Just that it can only be refilled at 2012 prices during 2012 so technically it can be refilled at 2013 prices during 2013 no?

I was told it would only be good for the 2012 season period, It is terribly confusing!

Okay, I was wrong. My memory sucks.

The exact wording on the mug is: 2012 mug is only refillable during the 2012 season.

Hello! I'm Marissa and I cannot believe I didn't know this forum existed before! I'm in my 20s now, but I've been going to Silver Dollar City since I was 7 or 8...it's one of my favorite places ever...especially at Christmas!

When I was younger we lived in Tulsa and we would go to Branson on weekends...we went a lot during the summer and Christmas. We used to camp in the Compton Ridge campground--my parents were brave! 4 young children in a pop up! I have such absolutely magical memories of the park during that time. I'm a Christmas fanatic and SDC is truly a winter wonderland during that time.

At any rate, my family moved from Oklahoma and Branson was a long drive so we stopped going. I ended up going to OU for college and dragged my fiance up for a weekend. It was just as good as I had remembered 10 years earlier. Two years later I dragged my family up for Christmas. Two years after that I convinced my husband and family that Branson was the place to be for Thanksgiving. And two years after we have a baby and I cannot wait to take her to Silver Dollar City at Christmas for the first time!

I've always been into history and no place does it better and more beautifully than SDC.

The first time I went back since childhood--I was really getting into it:

Hey guys, so I've posted here a couple times in the last few days. I grew up in Springfield and like most kids in the 80's had the enjoyment of being taken to Silver Dollar City for many years. I stopped going around my later teens and early twenties...not really sure why. I guess college and work really made me forget how great SDC really was. Well about three years ago I went with some friends and absolutely loved it. It brings back so many memories of my child hood.

While I am in my 30's, single, and don't have any kids I have been going to SDC every chance I get. I don't care if it's a "family park!." As an adult I have developed a certain appreciation for themed attractions and SDC at the top of my list. It really is like being a kid again when I go there and I plan on taking my mom there this summer so we can re-live some memories.

One of my hobbies has been learning about local history and until I found this site most of what I've learned has been Springfield based but thanks to Junior and many others I am learning so much about Branson and SDC. I can't wait to go back with friends and start telling them the history of the park..whether they want to hear it or not.

Thanks for the complement. My time on park as an employee was from 78-84. My childhood visits as a kid originally from the St. Louis area date back to 1970. I've seen the park, and Branson, change over the years, and I'm glad the park still has some of those attractions that date back to my childhood. I've taken two of my 10 grandkids to the park in the last year, and have had the pleasure of watching them experience SDC. My grandma was a "wide eyed kid" when she visited the park for the first time in the late '70's when I worked there. Five generations of my family have enjoyed SDC, and I hope the place is around so many more generations can, too. If there is anything anyone wants to know about the park or life in Branson during the time I lived there, don't hesitate to ask. I've kept my memories and my files tucked away for years, and finally, after over 30 years, I've had quite a bit of fun sharing with everyone here.

I lok forward to contributing and being a part of the site. I really have a cool attraction idea I will post soon, but for now let's enjoy the day.

Hello everyone!

My name is Kody and I'm 27 years old.  I'm originally from West Plains, and some of my fondest memories of my childhood are going to SDC for school trips (band, choir, and other various school groups) and with my family!  It's been fascinating reading some of the things on here and reminiscing about SDC days past.  Also, we FINALLY got our season passes for this year, and plan on attending as much as possible, starting this weekend!  We currently live in Joplin, but will be moving back "home" to Springfield next year, at which point hopefully we will be consistent yearly season pass holders.  And as crazy as it sounds...this year will mark both mine and my wife's FIRST OTC visit ever...I'm so ashamed  :-\  ...lol!

Look forward to participating!  ;D

Welcome Kody! It's still a bit away, but I hope you and your wife enjoy your first trip for OTC. It really is a special time to visit the park. Also, I'm digging your "Ozarkian Daredevilry" tag!  :D

We are absolutely looking forward to OTC!
:D Haha!!  Thanks Ozarks Gal, It's my little way of paying homage to the (now removed... :'() "daredevils" on AP.  The only one left is the guy and his dog in the whirlpool that doesn't even spin anymore!  I miss all the faces in the tunnel, the guy that dropped the barrel on you, and the ones that got rushed with water...but now it's just a flat cement tunnel with very little theme left.  Oh well...

And also my avatar icon is of the book "Zeke Hatfield and the Ghost Named Rocky".  I probably read that book a million times when I was younger.  I thought it was so cool I actually bought something from SDC with my own money, and it was a really fun story!

We are going to the City for the weekend with a group of friends, and we're even going to camp out Saturday night at The Wilderness! (I love to camp!)  Should be a fun trip!

Hello everyone, I enjoy reading all your posts on here, and all the info I have learned. My husband and I would walk around the park, and wonder about different things, and you guys would have a post about it. We buy season passes every 3 or 4 years, and with the kids grown we can go in the spring and fall now. We might do season passes next year, and not because of the new coaster,we probably won't even ride it. I'm too chicken, and my husband has back problems, but he thinks it looks neat. Keep up the good work on here, and thanks to who set it up.

Look forward to participating!  ;D  I like your profile picture!  I just read that to my daughter last night.

I've been lurking for almost a year now, and decided it was time I joined and introduced myself.

I've been a fan of Silver Dollar City since my first visit, I think it was 1976 possibly.  My mother grew up in southeastern Mo, (Summersville, near West Plains) and I loved going down to visit the "old home places" she grew up around (I'm from Iowa)  She kept saying she wanted to go to Branson sometime, and I keep poo-poo'ing that idea, since I loved the area she grew up in. My parents had visited SDC in it's earlier years when it was pretty much just the main street area.  Finally, she had her way, and we drove over to Branson on the way home. Our first stop was Shepherd of the Hills, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and then on out to SDC.  They had come after 3, next day free in those days.  We arrived after 3, and immediately did the cave tour.  Then....walked out and I discovered the wonderful thing that is Silver Dollar City!  Of course, by then, there wasn't much of the day left.  I begged and begged, whined and whined (umm, I was a senior in HS at this time!) to go back the next day, since it was free, but to no avail.

After that vist, pretty much up to the time I got married, we went every summer, spending a few days in Branson, and then over to visit the home places.  I treasured every trip.  When I got married, I drug my hubby down, and he pretty much hated it, which broke my heart, but low and behold, about 10 years later, we took our kids and eveyone, including hubby loved it!  So we go whenever we can now.

I love SDC!! I especially love the history of the park and the way things were when I went in those days.  I miss Flooded Mine before the Shootout, I miss the Taffy shop not being by the train station, I miss the doll shop not being by Hannahs, I miss the school when it was where the furniture shop is (though I love the furniture shop!) I miss the basket shop when it was in the Vineyard with all the baskets hanging overhead! I even miss the old entrance into SDC, before they changed the road up.

I too used to pretend I loved there, (and I repeat I was a senior in HS!)  I think I still would love to pretend, but my imagaination isn't as good as those days!

I've enjoyed reading all the posts especially the ones about the good 'ole days! Our family has been Disney freaks while the kdis were growing up, but my heart has always belonged to SDC.  With as many communities that there are for Disney freaks, I'm happy to find one for the SDC freaks!!

Thanks for the welcome! And while I dearly miss the old days, present day Silver Dollar City is still a pretty awesone place! I really enjoy the new rides.  While i miss the days the old school was where the furniture shop is, I love that shop, and one of these days something is going to follow me home from there! I also enjoy the time we spent at the Culinary & Craft School, and hope to catch a class each time we're there.  And i never got to enjoy Christmas at the city when I was growing up!

Progress isnt all bad, I guess!

Well, I reckon I've been riding the range long enough, surveying the landscape of this forum, so it's time for me to step in it.  A long time SDC visitor (my first visit was in the 60's), I've seen a lot of things come and go.  A lot of changes, some for the better, some not so much.  I'm kinda old school on a lot of things, so that will probably show in my posts.  Hopefully, I will praise as much as I critique.  Like all of you, I love the City and relish my every visit.  I'm not real chatty so I may not respond to every subject, but I'm watching.  You all take care...you've got a great past ahead of you.

If your first visit was during the 1960's, that means you have been going to Silver Dollar City since practically the beginning! Incredible. I can't wait to hear more about your experiences from "the good old days," and how they compare to the newest generation of Silver Dollar City.

Hi everyone... I am super excited to be posting on this web site. I love SDC and all of the HFE properties. My HFE count is 12, that includes visits to SDC, CC (RIP), WW, SBB, RTD (MO), DS (MO), DW, DWSC, DS (TN), SM, RTD (GA), and WA! I figured since the ACErs get to count coasters, we can count parks. I plan on visiting DL and EG next year. along with the two aquariums. that will bring my count to 16 of the 26 properties! I look forward to meeting all of you and hearing your stories!

I first visited Silver Dollar City 20 years ago and have been a fan ever since.

I now work for the corporate side Ashley Nostalgia - An Old Time Photo and Costume Company (So I am not always in Branson) and we are responsible for doing Old Time Photos at several Theme Parks across the states, including Ashley's Antique TinType and Photos at Silver Dollar City.

I stumbled across this fan site a while back and thoroughly enjoy all the conversation and speculation about things to come, memories of the past, and current trip reviews and photos.

I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now in anticipation of my upcoming vacation and trip to Silver Dollar City.  I've come to SDC every year with my family for the past 22 years (I believe) and my parents had been going for years before that when they were growing up.  Always a good time and, needless to say, we have lots of fond memories.

Hello.

I stumbled onto this site today while searching the web for the names of the members of the Time Machine Band so I could label some photos of the band I'm planning on posting on Facebook. Google brought me to a discussion about the "2015 coaster" that I found quite fascinating.

I'm new to the site, but not to SDC. I've been coming to the City for about 48 years now, since I was around 9. I've been buying myself a season pass for the last 5 or 6 years and visiting SDC (and the surrounding area) whenever I need a nice long weekend getaway. Sometimes I go to ride the rides. Sometimes I just watch the shows and take photos. And sometimes I do a bit of both.

I wouldn't mind being "the stained glass guy" for SDC....I think that'd be a great career, doing a craft I really enjoy while informing and entertaining people....if only I thought I could make a living at it. ;-)

Pleased to meet y'all!
Bob

Well, if there is one thing that Silver Dollar City is shamefully lacking, it's the number of talented craftsmen. I agree with others, you should contact Silver Dollar City, and see what they say.

Thanks for all the nice welcomes.

I agree that SDC seems to have lost a lot of their demonstrating crafts people, and I fear it's because they can't earn a living, especially if they're working on a commission basis and their work is always being interrupted by people wanting to talk. (I personally wouldn't think of it as an interruption....to me teaching people about your craft would be the best part of the job.  :) But, if you're working on a commission basis, that's time taken from paying work  :( and, ultimately, you need to make a living at whatever you're doing.) I still spend as much time watching the glass blowers and blacksmiths as I spend on any other show at SDC.

Just wanted to say hello from the Connell family in Greenbrier, AR.
I happened upon this site while looking for discount rates for Homestay Inn. We have stayed there before and liked it (clean rooms and friendly staff at a decent price). I was thrilled to see the deal you have worked out with them for members! Can't beat $40/night! We have been SDC season ticket holders for several years now and have really enjoyed the bring a friend passes and other perks you get with SDC season tickets. We usually go to SDC about 5 times or so a season and I think as a family we enjoy the SDC Christmas celebration the most. I am looking forward to reading through the posts and finding out about other peoples experiences at the park and lots of other great info, but I did just want to say hello too! Thanks for the great site!

Hello, my name is Parker. I've been coming to the city since before I could even remember. I found this site by looking for information about old attractions and new/future ones. I love all the rides and the atmosphere and I think it's great family fun :)

Hello Parker! It's good to see another "Ozark" aficionado. ;D

If you love Silver Dollar City, then you have definitely arrived at the right place. I never knew there was anyone more nutty about the park than I am. Then I found the nuthouse itself, sdcfans.com! Welcome. :)

I would encourage the people new to the forum to check out the history section if they are so inclined. Some great stuff here. Rube, Junior and History Buff are our resident historians and do an awesome job showing us pictures, old merchandise, and videos from years ago.

Why would you need a new account for your notebook? Can't you just log into your typical one? I actually use three different devices to check the site.

Since I became a member, I've been locked out of my account several times for weeks on end, and could not remember the password. I currently am locked out, so I created a new account to keep in touch. I am not tech savvy. So I wrote down the logon info for Junior, too! So until I can get back on to the main account when I remember the password, I will post here. You young folks can have a giggle on me! I still miss the IBM Selectric. If you don't know what that is you are under age 35. HA!

There is always a "forgot your password?" link on the login tab. You can use this to automatically reset your password through the email account you used to register.

Hi Holly! I work for a TV production company out of NYC and we're going to be coming to the park to show off all the great amusements SDC has to offer! We're looking for fans of the park who have grown up there and feel a deep connection with the park (as well as know the ins and outs). If you're interested or know someone who fits the part please contact me! Thanks!

Hi, I found this site last weekend, after my first visit to Silver Dollar City. I visited Thursday afternoon and Friday and I was really impressed and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Sorry I did not visit before. I have enjoyed reading the posts including the historical stuff and the links to the other sites.
I rode Outlaw Run which was pretty awesome, then the flume ride (got soaked). The City is just beautiful and I hope to visit again around the third weekend of October, ride some more coasters and see the cave.

Hello, my name is Laroy. I am 19, man, from Oklahoma. I go to SDC every 1 or 2 weeks, when they're open. I have been going ever since I was 3 and I got passes every year. Fire In The Hole is my favorite ride because it's the only ride with nothing bad to complain about. Its pretty much perfect.

I found this site going on Google and searching for a site where people are asking questions about SDC so i could answer them. I have been going to SDC so much that I'm friends with many of the employees. They tell me a lot of stuff that other people don't know about. I also am one of the first people to know when rumors are going around about future rides and if any construction or upgrades are going on, I'm one of the first to know.

I'm not really "new" anymore, but I'll post anyway. I'm from NW Iowa, probably the youngest member on this site, and first visited the park in June 2012 with my grandparents and extended family. Since then I have fallen in love with amusement parks and have visited SDC five times total (going to be six after this weekend!)

I found this site when I was  on Google searching to see if there were any rumors on what the park would be getting this year (I found some). I like this site because it is a great way to get information about my favorite park.

Yep.  This is my 9th year as Director of Bands.
We just finished Music Contest Season so forgive me if I am a little more loopy than normal -- I'm not use to this whole "having a life at night" thing.  Like for example, I had time to go run tonight after school. WHAT?!?!  Exercise!?!?  What's that.

I agree Band Camp will be here before I know it.  I don't even want to think about having to write drill yet.  That's a July thing.  (Camp is the last two weeks of July for me)

Are you a high school director or college? I'm in percussion for concert band, so drumline for marching band, and bass in jazz band.

Every male band director is a trumpet, if you haven't noticed.

I had a male director who played the clarinet.  He wasn't a good director though; the best ones all played trumpet.  In fact, ironically, the last band director I had (in college) was a former trumpet player for Elvis Presley.

And for the record, I was a percussionist (played quads in marching band).

...and I agree, for some odd reason, woodwind players really do not make good directors of band.  I've seen a lot of good woodwind assistant directors, but as the head dude, they are a rarity (though Macon has a sax player as their director and he has a really good band that we constantly fight for top honors at all competitions)

Hey Guys. I'm a long time off-and-on lurker. I first discovered the site in the Fall of 2010 searching for new ride rumors (so cliché, I know). I never officially joined because I got so wrapped up in working on my B.S. and A.M. My first memory of the park is riding FITH when I was three. I live just outside of St. Louis and buy season passes to both SDC and SFSTL every year, but I go to SDC a lot more often than Six Flags. (One of the few perks of being in the last two years of my PhD and being a theorist is that I can take multiple vacations a year  and nobody really notices...). SDC/Branson is pretty much my favorite place to be and I look forward to being part of this community going forward.

Welp, guess I'll jest jump off in here and gets my feets wet. I first visited the park in the fall of 1971 as a preteen with my Mother, older sister and younger brother in tow. instantaneously from that time forward a yearly trip to SDC ensued and quickly became a family tradition. I can surly count on both hands the years I have missed not visiting the park since. I have spent honeymoons (yes honeymoons as in plural, go ahead and laugh now, as I myself just did) with wives number 1 as well as wife number 3 at the city. However the most memorable trip (to date) had to be the spring of 1977 when myself and 2 fellow high school graduating seniors made the trek "unaccompanied" from Creek County OK to the city in a black Pontiac Trans Am. I was not so much into the rides and attractions that trip as we were desperately trying to catch the attention of girls, girl, or heck any female that was not old enough to be our mother! To summarize my experiences through the years, SDC with out doubt definitely turns back time. Each passing year I grow older but with each year brings another visit to the city and truly adds another week if not month to my life. The younger brother mentioned above turned me on to this site. Many of you know him here as DewyBald.

My first trip to SDC was in 1969 so i actually got to ride things like the stagecoach, float trip, Herman the Hermit's treehouse, etc.  We have been Season pass holders since 1990 so we don't get to go through the ticket booths but i try to make it a point almost every trip to walk up and look at those paintings.  They bring back a lot of great memories!

I grew up in central Oklahoma and heard of this fun place that some of my friends would visit during the summer; but, until December of 2015, and at 38, I had never been to Silver Dollar City. I’ve visited Branson many times for work events, with my wife shopping, and with our kids during scout days at the Dixie Stampede. My two oldest have been to SDC several times with friends on guest passes and we eventually purchased season tickets for them in recent years so they could go more often. I don’t really like rides and in my ignorance, I never found much reason to go myself. That changed last year.

We had a family tradition of visiting the Festival of Lights in Chickasha during the holiday time period when living in Oklahoma. After moving to Northwest Arkansas, we head back to Oklahoma around Thanksgiving to spend time with family and we’d spend an evening in Chickasha walking the lights again as a family. A friend of mine shared that his family did something similar at SDC and heavily recommended that I check it out online. Instead of my typical cursory look at SDC, I spent more time looking around and found enough to intrigue and interest me beyond the rides.

My wife priced out tickets for our visit in December 2015 and showcased what the additional cost for 2016 season tickets would be. We visited the park that month and I had a blast! As a family, we’ve been twice this year so far and I’ve even spent a Saturday there by myself. I’m pleased that there’s this golden nugget of a theme park close by and look for more adventures to come.

Hi I'm Kimber and my friend, dianagail, told me about this site! I probably won't post too much but I love SDC! I loved introducing my youngest to all the new rides and can't wait to take him to White Water in a few weeks!

Awesome.  Welcome Kimber.

Hi, I’ve been reading since early this spring, I found the forum searching on google for SDC rumors about the construction for Mystic River Falls. This year is our first year as season pass holders, we’ve gone the last couple of years at Christmas but decided that we should do seasons passes this year. Our 2.5 year old loves silver dollar city.
